I'm not sure why they feel the need to do this. Unless there's something seriously innovative, most everyone still has their old copies. I guess I could buy the new figures on the secondary market...

Maybe it will be set in the Age of Sigmar world instead of generic fantasy? It would make sense to promote Age of Sigmar more and being a contrast to FFG version.

I would be most interested if i wanted to buy Talisman in Horus Heresy version of it. I never played the computer game as there are better computer games (obviously) but as a physical boardgame it would make more sense for me.

I have Relic and its a great introduction game to boardgames for a younger generation.

Me, I've never actually played Talisman - just one of those things.
So for the ignorant like myself, how does it actually play?

Imagine a boot stamping on a human testicle, forever.
Seriously though it's a pretty torturous experience.
If you want to know what's it's like, go watch the episode of Co-Optional Lounge where TB & Co play the Tabletop Simulator version, only seeing others suffer through the experience can adequately convey the reality of it.

It's a game of it's time in many ways. I liked it back in the day, and have the FFG edition with a bunch of expansions (also, Relic and both expansions) but I have to admit that its best days are long gone compared to modern boardgames. Relic is the 40k-skinned version and is a bit more interesting/fun in some ways because 40k. I played it with my wife and some friends for the first time and after an hour or so one of them asked "so if my character dies or gets fully corrupted can I drop out of the game?" ...not a great sign.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I think a correct title for the thread would be 'new version' rather than bringing it back? The game is currently available and has been for many years.

And if it's a revamp or new version, shouldn't they call it something else? The game has been on sale for thirty odd years with only minor cosmetic changes (I only played the very old version with the card cutout characters the once, please correct me if I'm wrong!) so if you start changing how the game works.. well then it won't be Talisman will it!

Huh, after all the "I loved Talisman!" I heard on this site over the years i'm surprised by the negativity.

Also surprised it's a independant fantasy setting game. I always assumed it was another famous 40k spin-off lost to time!

First off, welcome to the forum!

Secondly, I'm thinking it could get AoS'd as well. Judging by the artwork and the short story involving fire genies and a magically appearing lush forest it seems to compare to Hammerhal and it's link between the realms of fire and life. So it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility and they could make great crossovers with Silver Tower.

Though it could just be a nostalgic jumpstart game.

Looking forward to finding out.

I grew up with talisman and played it alot in my teens.
The stunning artwork by Gary Chalk was one of the most important features of the original, almost like Frazetta hook people to Conan.
It fealt wery much like a rich coherent fantasyworld with lots of stories to tell, even though it had no history or background explained, just the solid artwork to tie it together.
I love the concept of walking around the board looking for artefacts and followers with no clear agenda.
The events, magic and magical artefacts together with the different abilities of the characters makes it quite entertaining and balanced.
Great game.

Seriously, Talisman is a glorified game of the goose. It's the pinnacle of "rolling dice is fun" mantra. Because that's all it is about.

At least, it's not a product that would need much editing and don't really require a lot of miniatures (just one for each hero and that's pretty much it), so it shouldn't be too expensive. But I'm not that excited for this one.

GW... currently making profits by latching onto the nostalgia market.

All of these games they're 'bringing back' should just have stayed available all the time. I mean, a game like Frustration/Trouble was made in the 60's and is always on toystore shelves. Why are GW incapable of doing this with their 'one box' board games?

Talisman is heavy on nostalgia and light on compelling gameplay. Since it was released you have a ton of much better balanced and fun games. It's such a shame GW won't take the time to actually rework their games rather than just renew the IP.

I've played two games of Talisman. I've finished zero games of Talisman.

Its not that it is a bad game, it just takes way too long and these days there are a myriad of better games.

My time with my gaming group / friends is precious - not going to waste a whole gamenight on a nostalgia trip.

Presumably, this will be sold in GW stores where the FFG version was not. That would open up sales to people that more or less live entirely within the GW ecosystem.

I'm enjoying the tablet versions (probably the Horus Heresy one more than the regular Talisman game) - people wondering about the game could pick up the app fairly cheaply and see if it's for them (helpful tip - the PC version on Steam is much more expensive than the app available on Google Play, with no real difference).

If GW's putting it out again, I'm wondering if they'll revisit the Timescape supplement. I did enjoy being able to take a Space Marine in Talisman.

Dude- this is why they nixed their deal with FFG. If they don't release Talisman on their own, then they've cut off their ear with no recourse.

I love the way that they're announcing "Talisman is Back." As if the game isn't available from FFG through the end of this month.

Talisman fans rejoice indeed. Fury of Dracula fans should despair.

Ok- there are two sides to this one-

On the one hand, geek board games do have a limited shelf life- after which point, you've pretty much sold the game to everyone who wants one. There are exceptions (especially in the toy store crowd- but those games are rarely played by anyone- mostly they're bought as gifts for kids).

On the other hand, GW have been worse about keeping their games available than most companies that make board games. They've had a huge slew of games that they've kept out of print for decades. Presumably, they saw the board games as competing with their own miniatures game lines (instead of seeing it as a way to get money from folks who don't play 40k). Many of their games should have just stayed around (and had four editions by now).

Blah blah blah Talisman sucks, etc...and yet FFG sold a *gakload* of it. I don't need every boardgame I play to have the mathematical precision of chess, and clearly *many* other people feel similarly. Sometimes it's nice to play a game that's colorful, lighthearted, and doesn't require intense focus and strategy.

The main problem the game has is when no one can get any momentum going at the start. Start your characters just a smidge stronger (say, a bonus point in strength or craft) and make 'leveling up' easier (by reducing the number of trophies you need to turn in from 7 to 6 or 5) and the game can go a good deal more quickly. IMO, it's also good not to play with TOO many expansions at once, or too many players. Which could also be said about a lot of other boardgames.

People don't dislike Talisman because they're big meanie nasty snobby boardgame elitists, they dislike it because it's a soul-crushing endurance marathon of dice rolling and nothing else. There are plenty of excellent simple, lighthearted board and card games, Talisman just isn't one of them for a lot of folk because it commits for them the one unforgivable sin - it's boring.

I like the part when you've spent hours building up your Craft and Strength to make a run at the Crown of Command (or unknown final act if using expansions), and you get turned into a fething toad.

Never really enjoyed the actual board game. Shoots-and-Ladders with a fantasy theme. The catch-up mechanic at the end never really worked, and the whole game was just random.
But I did get the Steam version in a Hubble Bundle a few years ago and enjoyed it for a couple of weeks. The difference was the missions... you had goals OTHER than getting the Crown, etc. So, alternate win conditions would be a good thing for this game.

The alternate endings are better as I don't like the crown of command mechanics.

It's still a grind to get there. The game is OK. I prefer it on my tablet. In person, I'd rather play an RPG or other board game with my group.
