I'm surprised how many people have mentioned Shepard.

For me, it's got to be SHODAN (hence the avatar). She absolutely steals the show, and her threats actually feel... well threatening.

That's Kyle Katarn, right? He's pretty awesome too.

1: Pretty much anyone from Persona 4 would be my first go.

2: The Shadowrun reebot series has had some awesome characters. Particularily the dragonfall title.

3: Solaire from dark souls. Damn that's a sunbro.

Shepard in Mass Effect is really a good choice: as bad or good as you make him to be.
Lucky you said player character, Mordin Solus beats everyone hands-down (he IS playable so counts right?).
BTW always running around with him and Grunt is comedy gold.

A bit more over the top is Rico Rodriguez in "Just Cause".
I think I like him the most in JC2 but I have more game to see yet in 3.
He is just plain fun. I have not had so much fun in unadulterated destruction since "Duke Nukem".

All-time-hands-down best character is "HK-47" from Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic.
I have never been so happy to be called a "meat-bag" or his treatise of how love is like a sniper rifle and your target.
He barely "squeaked-out" "Minsc and Boo"! (the connection appears to be a gleeful penchant for destruction).

Oh the flashbacks are worth writing this alone... go for the EYES Boo!

I'd vote for Minsc and Boo, but mainly for boo

I'm not really one for 'greatest', so I'll just stick to favourites.

PCs, we're talking Femshep--I never got along well with Maleshep--from Mass Effect; Master Chief and Arbiter from Halo; Ratchet & Clank from... well, take a wild guess; Link from OoT; Boss from Republic Commando.

NPCs is where it gets even more bloated: From ME we've got Legion, Tali, Garrus, Liara, Joker, EDI, Wrex, Grunt, Mordin, and Conrad Verner. Halo has Cortana and Johnson. Fallout has Dogmeat, ED-I, Fantastic and his theoretical degree in physics, Yes-Man. Skyrim gets Paarthurnax. The Outsider from Dishonoured. Fixer, Scorch, and Sev from Republic Commando.

And probably others I'm forgetting about due to it being half 2 in the morning.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

My ancient "lab"

My top 5 are as follows:
1.Arthas, Lich King(Warcraft, WoW). A tragic tale of such a noble cause always hits hard for me(probably why I like Magnus). At the same time, he is such an iconic villain(to the point that i'm considering a CSM lord conversion of him) and was truly a menacing site to behold .
2.Chell(Portal 1/2). Valve does silence so well. Not a word was spoken from her, and so little was told to us about her, it immersed us in her position. At times you simply were her.
3.Kratos(God of War). What a savage. You feel his pain, and love making the god's feel theirs whilst in his form.
4.Cole Phelps(L.A. Noire). He was truly an everyday man. there wasn't anything mystical or sci-fi about him, but we got a strong story and powerful character all the same.
5.Rosalina(Mario Galaxy 1/2). A significantly better princess than both Peach or Daisy, she gets stuff done. Her backstory is very interesting and is a blast to uncover, cause star people are cool.

In a quick post-analysis, i've noticed multiple similarities to some primarchs in game characters. Kratos is literally arena Angron, Fulgrim is shockingly similar to Sephiroth with that purple scheme, the long white hair, and the super-sword.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Most of you have still got the wrong answer and only one has mentioned the correct answer without mentioning a whole list of wrong ones first. Tut-tut.

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Minsc

Because of the success of Minsc and his long lasting appeal Bioware went on to characterise the rest of its series characters in the same vein, brim full of personality. This has leeched out into other franchises including later Fallout and Elder Scrolls releases, and The Witcher.
They owe a lot to the ranger packing a hamster and a large sword.

Boo is a permanent debuff, he takes up an equipment slot, does nothing, and replaces the possibly of having a ranger companion of actual combat worth. When it happened it couldnt have happened, Boo added no plusses to the character and in fact took option away however Bioware learned that personality outweighs all this. Players loved Minsc, he joined the party and because part of our memories forever.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

For NPC it's gotta be GLaDOS from Portal. I love how she's just a spiteful and cold villain, yet very humorous when she wants to be.

As far as PCs, I think it'd have to be someone from Borderlands, either Zero or Krieg. It's fun to play as the Psycho and just toss tactics to the wind and shout about meat-bicycles.

Gruff McScowl, brooding white guy with an anti-authoritarian streak. He has a mean stubble, a glint in his eye, and doesn't play by the rules. Probably has a dead wife/girlfriend (and is likely angry about it). Never a boyfriend. Also, he is a totally average normal guy but also superfit and good at fighting and shooting. Maybe magic and swords. You will find him in in 80% of AAA titles and almost all FPS/ combat games.

He is my favorite because he is exactly what I thought was cool when I was 12.

I don't know who to pick between Shepard and Geralt. I also like Glados a lot as well. Tiny Tina and Mr. Torgue get mentions as well. Clementine and Lee. I also like Lambert and Thaler from Witcher 3. Yusuke and Makoto from more recent games (persona 5) are the best characters in that game. Still I think my fav of all time would be Shepard or Geralt. It's a touch choice though. Archon of Whispers is one few would know. I feel like a hipster just for mentioning him.
