You might be right there, that the themes will become the default lists for playing. With that in mind, I wonder if they are going to have something like 6-10 themes for each faction, or just 3. If there are more than a handful of themes for each faction that might actually work out ok, although it would still be a little bit irritating.

I still think that if they want to make taking sets of units/models together more appealing, they should instead create some more internal synergies and buffs, like how Veteran Leader and the like work out. Or even have certain models give a discount on other units, like taking a Whitemane lowers the cost of a unit of Ravagers by 2 points or something. That effectively makes the Whitemane cheaper, but only if you take his bros too.

There will be theme books coming out starting sometime this summer (IIRC). Each book will concentrate on a specific theme (like Menoth exemplars, Khador Man O Wars, etc.,) they will also have new figures to be released within a couple of months of the book to keep factions fresh. I don't believe that PP has said the order of the books to be published but there will be the new books for each faction. The current command books are just the vanilla flavor for each faction.

Yeah, it was kinda a bummer there where no druids or Tharn in my Command book.
But I like the theme forces. They kinda remind me of Alternate FOC is 40k.
Yeah their restrictive, but they still allow alot of freedom in playing them.

New themes are the planned release structure for MK3. I believe starting in October (July/August/Sept are Grymkin releases) we'll see this roll out, with Cygnar getting the Gravediggers theme along with the release of Siege2 and some more Trencher stuff. The idea is that all the new Cygnar models for the year will be out then as well. Either October or November will see Trolls get the Northkin theme, which presumably means Borka3 or something along those lines and a bit more ice/fire in Trolls.

No theme list ever devised will make Borka2 playable. I wish they'd spend more time fixing obviously broken stuff than just patching over mediocre units with themes.

Borka2 has never been in bad in practice as he looks on paper. Battle Charged is a strong spell in general and his feat lets you play very aggressively quite safely. He's interesting to run with Rok and a bunch of Slag trolls that can really do some impressive work with their counter charges. His biggest problems are that Doomie3 and now Ragnor compete for the time walk nature of his feat favorably and don't need to be in as much danger to contribute and he above all other casters suffers from the limitations of the krielstone that have been made much worse in MK3.

I'm less curious of what the theme force will do for him as the models released alongside it. He's always been a little desperate for new Northkin stuff that doesn't rely on his spell to make his feat work and more stuff that's immune to cold would be a huge bonus. The theme force could really help by giving him something similar to the WG theme with Advance move on his battlegroup and something to protect him. Alternatively, some Fury support like Fury starting on the stone (which honestly, should just be a thing and not a theme bonus) or something like Whelps gaining serenity.

Most likely though we'll see some sort of extra rule given to Northkin models, since that would apply uniquely to him as well as Champions that Skaaldi is attached to. No idea what that could be, but it provides a lot of room for him to personally benefit from the theme. Alternatively, giving the bonus to things immune to cold specifically gives him a ton of unique interactions, but pretty much guarantees you won't see the theme useful with anyone else.
