I played and really enjoyed Renegade, and I have gangs of commmorah and plan on playing it, but have yet to actually play it.

I think the biggest problem with these games is the hypershort release cycle and just a huge amount of saturation.

I get the feeling they are just finding creative ways to push overstocked models out the door.

Space Hulk- fun game. The models that come with the new edition are amazing (even for single pose).

Wish we'd get some more like that.

I'd love a new Tyranid Attack w/Space Hulk style one-pose minis.

Owned a couple copies of Betrayal at Calth and one of Burning of Prospero...solely for the models. I don't think I'd bother with any of the games (they're quite "thin" as board games from the read through of the rules).

If I'm going to play some 40K I'll just play 2nd ed or Necromunda.

Yeah in their Boardgames.. the only ones I have played Multiple times is Overkill and Dreadfleet

Dreadfleet has the ability to paly as just fleet battles instead of story missions which is good

Overkill the ability to mix up the squads is what makes it repalyable

Is anyone actually playing these games, and if so, what do you think?.

I haven't played 40k since the dawn of fifth edition. I dislike the WAAC I see it breeding. So I play board games now.

As a boardgame, GW really are getting back to their namesake. Some titles really knock it out of the park, while others seem to be an excuse to buy minis for their core games.

Gorechosen and silver tower really stand out as the cream of the crop since their boardgame reformation. Gorechosen, especially.

For such a simple game with so few miniatures, it's a dazzling and satisfying game design. I'd place it up there with Space Hulk in terms of quality design. Seriously, if you only buy one GW boardgame to actually play the game, then Gorechosen is the one to get. Brilliant and fun stuff.

I was so impressed by the game engine, that I rethemed it as a kaiju brawling game. It now goes to 12, since Gorechosen already went to 11.

I now watch GW more closely to see what fare they bring out next. Eager to find a design that matches Gorechosen's streamlined fun. I am optimistic about Shadowspire especially.

In short, GW are relevant to me again, and I'm glad for that.

Silver Tower and Shadows of Harrenhal do "work together"; all the heroes from one work in the other, and my understanding is that the villains from ST work in SoH. the questing element is different because the theme of the quest is different. The base mechanics are the same, aren't they? (action dice, roll to hit/save, that sort of thing).

Go back and re-read my post. I explained the differences in very clear terms.

I must be missing something, then.

why don't these games work with one another? Why does one game have a completely different core mechanic (rando-card dungeons) to the other (GM-based pre-planned adventures). Old Quest had both, as it happens, and you could do either and mix and match. These two games do not, and it hurts both of them. It's worse when they appear to be under the same ruleset, but aren't really.

what are you trying to do? The heroes are cross-compatible. The villains from ST can be used in SoH. Is it the fact you can't run a hero through one and then through the other while keeping the skills and treasure from the first?

Betrayal at Calth- This is becoming a favorite around here. When you don't have time, space, or feel lazy, this game gets you into 40k mode. It's a fun system involving dice and command cards. The lack of point cost for special and heavy weapons can be problematic when your instructions for a mission are bring "one veteran tactical squad". All in all fun game. I wish I could find some expansion scenarios for it.

Three published so far:

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2016/11/06/betrayal-at-calth-spoils-of-war/ is pretty one-sided, but becomes an entirely different beast if you just modify the boxes in a manner that requires the Ultramarines to move further than their nearest boxes. As it stands, it is nigh impossible to win with the traitors. Take a pip away and challenge the loyalist to try and fight for his points and it is actually damn tight.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2016/10/31/betrayal-at-calth-at-any-cost/ when you just need all the guys. Given the engaging way this games handles turns, aka forces you to decide where you want to kick ass and where do you accept that you're going to get wrecked, it handles upscaling pretty well. Dozens of actions everywhere as explosives fly all around, yes please! Not too sure about the point system yet, might have to give this one some thought.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2016/10/31/betrayal-at-calth-scenario-vii-rise/ continues the main campaign. This time it is a stand against the wall with unreliable demons crawling everywhere. Bit dicey, but such is the lot of these games.

At BoardGameGeek there are also some fellows who have contributed their ideas for expansions, including sisters of battle, decks and stats for Nurgle worshippers and genestealers and so forth.

Nottingham (yay!)

I bought the Heresy and Deathwatch games for the minis, and keep the unused rules books and playing boards in the boxes on the same shelf as Space Hulk and Monopoly. They're there for if a guest fancies a game without getting out the 6x2 boards. Picked up Warhammer Quest for the game, though, if it turns out fun I'll be getting Silver Tower as well.

I still play the OLD version of lost patrol now and then.

I just use miniatures for the ambush greeblies and newer scout models for the scouts (metals, from 2nd ed).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

We played Gorechosen quite a bit. It's a much better game than we expected.

And Assassin and Silver Tower have seen some play. Assassin is quite good. The achievements make it much harder.

Still painting BaC and Prospero. Dreadfleet might get painted, if I can come up with a set of house rules.

Picked up Shadow War and that will hit the table soon. This weekend hopefully.

I haven't really played 40k since 2nd edition... but I like the new GW boxed games.

I own Imperial Knights: Renegade, but have never played it. The game itself looks awful.

My friends have Deathwatch: Overkill. It's OK. We played most of the missions last year, but haven't had the urge to finish the last couple missions it this year.

Renegade looks like it'd be more fun in Epic scale with half a dozen minis per side. It's basically the old 2nd edition titan targeting rules.

Stormcloud Assault is a fun game. A pity Forge World didn't do rules for their flyers, since I have quite a few of them, but if I had more than a single Stormtalon, I'd like to play it more.

Renegade is basically Battletech with one giant mech per team. Would be MUCH better by having four or 6 guys playing and making teams. 1v1 isn't great. It's okay. But not great. Gorechosen is much better.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I've now got the chance to try silver tower, and it's fun! most definitely a worthwhile game on it's own, apart from the figures. i can see messing around with it for a while.

It does sadden me that the tiny fish familiar is described as "disgusting". he's not gross, he's adorable.

My son and I tried a 2 on 2 Storm Talon vs. Heldrake, it was actually quite disappointing - the Talons were completely outclassed by the Heldrakes rake attack/vector strike. It really needs a point system, and some of the flyers are just awful (Tau, I'm looking at you) or too good (Space Wolf Stormwolf/Stormfang, I'm looking at you).

Despite loving the Specialist Game Lines, I have not revisited these new games. I am honestly a bit surprised by this. I think it is because I have just moved onto new game systems and really have no desire to go back to lesser versions of the old games I loved.

Is it fair to think of them as lesser versions? I don not know, and don;t want to spend the money to find out.
