The fluff has been that way since 2nd ed. Not retcon, no matter how much you may think it may stink of retcon .

I like the Alpha Legion. The Alpharius jokes are funny.

Personally I feel that they should have been made renegades instead of chaos marines.

I swear I'm not a paid shill for Anvil Industry. I’d be willing if they wanted to pay me.

I prefer the Index Astartes article era for their fluff although I did enjoy the angle that Legion presented. The problem with the other Alpha Legion stuff is that it has been handled by some of the not so good Black Library writers out there. They were redeemed in Praetorian of Dorn a bit, but they still end up losing and quite badly. The FW stuff has painted them in a better picture and the short stories I have read has. Long games at The Long Games at Carcharias and We Are One being stand outs.

I think, and i've said it before, that the Heresy Series is a bad idea. I enjoy it being fleshed out but more and more I am disappointed by the revelations and the stories. It should have been left as the time of legend and mystery that it had been.

Legion was passable. If the pacing had been better, perpetuals removed, and the whole convincing Alpharius to turn on daddy took more than a mere two pages, it would have been pretty good.

I listed the entirety of the Alpha Legion's novel wins, which is exactly 1, where they seize an AdMech vehicle (unless you count the novels that deal with the Dropsite Massacre). They have so far been smacked by the Space Wolves, White Scars, and Imperial Fists in the novels. Below is a link to my more detailed posts on all mentioned defeats and wins.

The first Horus Heresy book I read was "Legion" and before I read it I never really thought much of the Alpha Legion, while I do like their color scheme and Sindri Myr is one of my favorite characters in the series, plus I do like their original lore, but they just never really interested me that much, but overall I did think they were alright. But after reading Legion they became my Least favorite of the 9 traitor legions and their Primarch Alpharius Omegon became my least favorite of the Chaos Primarchs. Don't get me wrong I thought the Book overall was good, It was the ending that ruined the Legion for me (if you read the book you'll know what I mean) But basically, the Book turned the Alpha Legion from Green Berets in Space, into an army of Scooby-doo villains. What's worse is that the mysteriousness of the Alpha Legion is now a joke of sorts in the community, while it was funny the first few times now it's just getting old. Plus Their new lore just makes them confusing, Loyal-Heretics? WTF? It's especially more confusing when you have characters like Sindri and Carron who are obviously full on Chaos marines. It just confuses me man. While I don't flat out hate the Alpha Legion it's just that compared to the other traitor Legions I like them the least (Though their not my least favorite overall, that honor goes to the White Scars). Overall I just wondering if there are other people out there who think the Alpha Legion lost their coolness after "Legion" as well?

have to nitpick the bold. Alpharius and Omegon are not chaos primarchs, they are traitor primarchs, possibly renegade primarchs (or loyal primarchs who were super loyal, loyal enough to slay the emperor... for the emporor's good)... but they did not join chaos they are their own side and the cabal go them to turn on the empire specifically to defeat chaos.

chaos primarchs are (probably going to butcher spelling) Angron (khorne), Fulgrim (slaneesh), Puterabo (possibly united, unclear if specific god loyal from my reading so far), Mortarian (nurgle), Magnus (tzeench), Lorgar (himself, though in a greater sense chaos united).

as for the space marines as said they have members who are humans unaugmented and infiltrate hive cities, plants, governments etc in order to reach their goals which are varied. some of the members are turned to chaos but not all and they function together like a big dysfunctional hydra family, what is not to love

I have not read about Omergon being killed then again it has been years since I read the HH and even then not the most recent books. Last I had read Alpharius was killed, though as they all claim to be alpharius.. and there was no real proof the warrior killed was the actual alpharius it could have been a legion member and nto him (or could have been him admittedly).

which book is omergon killed in>? I should reread that

I couldn't even finish Legion, it was just bad. I think it's partly that I hate the Perpetuals subplot or multi-book arc or whatever they're doing. I don't need invincible psychic Mary Sues when I'm trying to read gritty war stories.

Now, I love Alpha Legion, they're my legion. What did it for me was reading Deliverance Lost which does the infiltration/misinformation/deception right.

And it's one of the few (only?) stories they win in. So that helps.

I think the epilogue is pretty direct in saying that Alpharius is dead, because Omegon truly feels like he is "alone" in a significant way. Which i guess means Omegon is killed by Guilliman in wherever that source comes from (if that truly was Omegon pretending to be Alpharius)

I feel like PoD redeemed the Alpha Legion for me after Legion, so i do believe the new HH fluff can do our boys in blue/green/purple a decent depiction.

Oh hells no, I disagree with the OP. The Alphas, as depicted in Legion, kick ass. I highly dislike their depiction in the games, as they seem the "usual" evil-spiky-demon-loving warband. This is just... wrong. In my personal fluff, I see them as a renegade legion that is neither chaos-worshipper, nor your typical loyalist, as they despise the IoM for what it is. Instead, they fight for what they think the Emperor would have wanted, with every field commander having free reign on how to go about the whole thing

I suggest you go back and reread the last ~20% (when they go to the planet Grammaticus keeps trying to get them to go to). It's the only part of the book that matters in the scheme of things. They kinda kick ass in the end.

Granted its been a while since I read Legion (because it, like Prospero Burns seemed to drag on). But the only thing I really remember about the book is from that last 20% of the book.

Spoiler:
When they kill the Imperial Army General and he asks why. "For the Emperor."

Because they had the throw back to the Alpha Legion using that battle cry while fighting in the 41st millennium.

I honestly believe a Primarch knows when he is fighting another Primarch. Omegon gets McKilled by Yogurt Chinchillamon in whatever fluff says it happened.

Except that...that never actually happened?

Officially?

Or, most likely, even unofficially?

"Back then" in the IA article, it was pretty clear that "Alpharius" was still alive in "40K".

If we still think that article is...canon...then that would mean that Omegon, now acting as Alpharius, is still alive.

Of course, if we're using that article as canon, then Alpharius/Omegon are almost as tall as Horus, and all Alpha Legion marines are actually all unusually tall as well, so...

Oh, fair enough! Yea, I never knew what the source was for that, or if it was still considered cannon. I'd much sooner ditch that fluff and stick with the HH as it rewrites some of it.

Hmm i wonder who will win in the 30k book?

Alpharius is that guy at the FLGS that just got his first 'Start Collecting' box fully assembled, and Guilliman's the guy that's been playing since the 90's. When Alpharius started doing well, Guilliman said he didn't play a 'real army' and started screaming about how he sucked. Then Alpharius tabled him.

From the newer fluff, Alpharius and Omegon are both smaller than some Legionnaires, re: PoD, Serpent Beneath. From the article, I never thought it was clear - it had the ambiguity that allowed for what-ifs.

In the IA article it is very clear - but then, Alpharius didn't have a twin then, only Marines in his legion that were of a size to double for him.

As much as I love LEGION - and I do, even with all of its problems - there are times I wish it was never written.

Especially if Dan wasn't ever going to write a follow up novel.

Which apparently he isn't.

And yeah, having a IF fanboi write the book in which the IF off Alpharius?

Lame.

Maybe we'll get one where Omegon gets revenge and kills Dorn?

Dare to dream!
