Congrats to Bill O'Reilly for harassing women for decades, and then getting a hefty paycheck as a reward on the way out.

What a great guy.

That is why I quit watching. Honestly back in the day he would try to have good conversations, then it turned into him just bullying the people that came on his show. It was the worst kind of opinion related news shows.

The sad truth is of course that Bill was not fired for sexual harassment. FoxNews has no problem with sexual harassment, not only will they keep on paying you while you are harassing women, they will also pick up the tap and pay to make the women go away after they complain about you harassing them. FoxNews is okay with you being a scumbag as long as you are a scumbag that brings in money.

Bill was fired because he became a negative entry on the balance sheet. After this last news the advertisers left, and with them the money. And a guy who harasses women AND who doesn't make you any money doesn't have a place at FoxNews.

Of course this is just a wider symptom of the 24 hour news channels in particular: there is no integrity and no values, political or otherwise, there is only the money.

The real shame is that this boiled down to losing money for Fox, instead of, ya know, integrity or values or anything like that.

FOX paid out $13 million and was happy to keep O'Reilly on the air. At the same time former CEO Roger Ailes was in the midst of his 40 year history of sexual harassment.

The morality at FOX News appears to be that anything is okay, unless they get caught.

I wonder what his next move will be. Is he able to survive online among even louder, brasher a-holes peddling his brand of "news" like Breitbart, Infowars, and Rebel Media?

Actually, i could see him ending up at Breitbart.

White House Press Sec?

Former FOX News CEO Roger Ailes was revealed as a sexual predator. He took his $40m payout for leaving, and started a couple of weeks later as part of Trump's campaign staff.

Trump has already come out and defended O'Reilly. He was pretty much the only person to defend O'Reilly.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see O'Reilly take up some kind of position in Trump's team. Wouldn't be Press Secretary though, the money wouldn't be enough for O'Reilly

EDIT - Is this politics?

That said, I really can't think of a cable TV talking head I can stand listening to at all. Not Carlson, not Maddow, not O'Reilly, or any others that I cann recall. I think the fundamental nature of that show just instantly enrages me on general principle.

There's been some studies that show that listening to talking head shows, especially ones where panels of guests argue back and forth make you dumber. Not misinformed but literally dumber, as in temporarily lowering your IQ.

Is John Oliver a talking head show? He's fantastic.

He's different because his show runs only once a week. That gives a lot more time to do the work needed to colllect the important parts of an issue and present them in a meaningful context.

Jon Stewart on The Daily Show was okay for a lot of his run despite having to do one show a day, but there was still a lot of filler and nonsense, and the effort of putting up some kind of decent analysis every single day ground the man down pretty badly.

Is that the line you're going to take in your FOX News audition tape? Might work.

Hey now, we have no evidence that O'Reilly wasn't an arrogant, obnoxious gakbag before he got power, so can we really blame it on the amplifying effect of power?

Honestly from what I've seen he gradually got worse over the years, though if this was specifically him being corrupted by power or a matching an overall trend of Fox News getting worse can be debated. Personally I think that yeah, the popularity corrupted him. Especially after he started writing the 'Killing' series he seemed to get very full of himself.

O'Reilly telling those blatant lies and only being called on it by fringe media figures like Al Franken strikes me as a big part of the issue. Does anyone believe if a liberal pundit like Maddow had claimed her show won awards, claiming a more famous award than what was won, and implying it was won while he was at the show, that it wouldn't lead to broad criticism? The conservative media would make it a national issue for months, and the rest of the media would follow along. But this happens on FOX News and no-one cares because the mainstream just accepts that FOX is crap told by liars.

The result is that FOX gets away with it. Even now they've somehow managed to have their CEO and most famous media figure both revealed as committing decades of sexual harrasment, with hardly anyone suggesting maybe there might be a cultural problem at FOX.
