I reread Crush, yes it works with foot warriors but it is expensive and cannot stack with other needed dice increasing abilities beyond the generic one.

Making it very situational and risky for foot warriors.

I just recently got into Saga after having bought the C&C and A&A books. Picked up starter-4pt boxes of Britons and Saxons. My buddies play Viking-era, so I'll combine those figures to play as the Anglo-Saxons in Dark Age games (one of the few factions not already taken in the group).

I am quite intrigued about using this system for GW's Lord of the Rings figures (as their game was too light). I am already half-way through a conversion process.

I am working on an Irish warband and a friend is painting up the Scots.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

Expensive, situational and potentially devastating. These adjectives are applicable to most Norman abilities - IIRC Normans have the 2nd highest number of 'rare' requirements on their board. Sure it can't stack but what were you planning on stacking with it considering all other abilities are unavailable to dismounted melee units.

As it needs you to have twice the hits as your opponents, you usually want to stack it with a dice generating ability of some sort. That or hit an already moderately weakened foe

I think there is already a set of rules and battle boards out there for LoTR, although not sure what they are like. I will take a look..

This is easily my favourite historical game. The only weaknesses are the terrain rules (the more terrain the worse gaming experience) and the boring missions in the Rulebook. Fortunately, the UK SAGA scene and others have developed some very fun tournament missions that make the game a blast. It also helps with balance, as factions who are not as killy, might still do good in certain scenarios.

When you play Saga, do you tend to play missions from the book, homemade scenarios, or something different?

Generally I tend to write a scenario for the group, and we play that. I wonder how much that really changes the factions.

Has anyone else played a game of the new edition yet and would care to share the experience?

I pre ordered it, and am waiting for it to ship across the pond.

We did try out the retain your dice mechanic that supposedly says you can role your full dice each turn regardless of what's on the board. It did not have a major change, but I'm not sure we were the most devious in exploiting it.

I ordered from Gripping Beast, and they just showed up. Only briefly scanned them, but there are some interesting tweaks to the battleboards.

Anglo-Danish Intimidation has been altered, making it a bit more balanced (before it was perhaps a bit too powerful).

There is a relics section now to add to your warband if you wish (such as a fragment of the True Cross).

The Normans also appeared to now have some abilities that could work with unmounted troops. They also lost one of their bow abilities (still have the double range, but lost the double dice, which hurts crossbows).

As someone who intended to play as Byzantines I am quite disappointed with the changes on the 2nd edition. The main appeal of them was being a combined arms army with all units working together to support each other, that was utterly removed in the 2nd board, replaced with quite uninspired abilities

I plan on ordering the 2nd edition next month.

If Intimidation has been changed (and it should be as I use it every turn) then I hope the Jomsviking's Punishment has also been changed.

I hate that ability.

If Intimidation has gone, then I can kiss the few games that I have won goodbye!

Picked up the new version and new Viking book. Does anyone make laser cut wood or acrylic measuring sticks and tokens?

I was surprised they did not include a sheet of these to cut out or copy.

If all the measurements are still the same, these look pretty cool.

Is the table size still 4x3? It always drove me nuts that I can't find a good mat producer with something that size.

Laser cut measuring sticks do exist and the ones infinite array linked look good. Especially as you can order it cut in acrylic! I don't know as they don't say whether theirs are CM or Inches.
Alternatively, If you can find those screw together metal measuring sticks in inches/cm, or if you just have some wooden rods you can cut to size. The measurements in inches are:

Long: 12
Medium: 6
Short: 4
Very Short: 2

Now in Saga 1st, there was the option of inches or centimetres. The CM sticks are fractionally smaller than the inches sticks, not really enough to matter to be honest, but just so you know. The start of 2nd edition only states the sizes in inches (though they may later on include CM).
The rulebook says the gaming surface is 48*36, so yeah, 4 by 3 foot.

I had my first game of Saga 2 last night and it was fun.

Anglo Danes did lose their activation cancel ability, but all armies gained it as a basic Fatigue ability so they kept it in another form.

Warlords are much more powerful now and I am really looking forward to the Samurai and Fantasy expansions.
