Antares is also directly competing with 40k in some ways but less fantasy and more science fiction. Hence trying to get traction is difficult just because of the competition from GW. However in my opinion the ruleset is better than 40k (both 7th and 8th) but more in depth so takes more time to grasp the nuances.

They are still investing in Antares with new plastics so there must be some traction, I'd guess in the UK mainly given the US responses. It's one of those things though you need people to play it to get people to stock it. But if people don't stock it then it doesn't get the same exposure.

It's definitely worth a try and is much more cost effective than 40k.

In the US with how distributors work, if you don't pre-order it for the initial release, Stores can have a hard time stocking Miniature games, even ones from US companies. But over seas companies are way worse for restocks at distributors. And if the local group that plays that game doesn't keep buying or showing enthusiasm, the store might not even bother to keep trying to get it in. And if players can't get what they want to play with when they want it, they lose interest.

It is a vicious cycle

Thanks for all the feedback everyone :

I bought the core set and picked some stuff up through warlord during the sprue sale over the last few weeks.

My 12 year old son and I played our first game today and he really enjoyed it. This was his first official wargame, we play Zombicide fairly often, and he has helped with my kings of war games.

Also waiting on my order (which shipped last Friday) from warlord of the Kar'A nine box set, Xilos book (with exclusive Ghar fig) and the new Chryseis book which also comes with a free fig. Since I reached my order total they are sending me a free LT. Spiers also. Which I saw great as I got 15% off it all because I signed up for their newsletter and the £ is so low compared to the $.

I started a new blog here on Dakkadakka a few weeks back showing my build of the figs and terrain. Come check it out.

Antares came out with a lot of Reputation from Bolt Action. I realy like the Figure design and the way Warlord Games has gone their own way with this System, far away from the known Science Fiction Mainstream Tabletop Lore with Orks Aelves and Space Soldiers.

On the other hand, the rules are far more complicated. A lesser complex Ruleset would help a lot. But i fear the shot has missed, and Antares just is keeped alive by good will.

Sadly, Warlord Games has overplayed a good Hand. To many systems. A lot to many manufacturors they have taken over. And a to many different Figure designers as well. While GW can sell their specialist systems from their Name alone, WG had a to small customer base to copy that. It was also a big big mistake, to push the same Game System concept in a three way style: Bolt Action, Antares AND Konflikt 47. Konflikt47 has in fact killed our local Bolt Action community, but also Antares as well. With the second Edition this has becoming worse. Now we also had a patt between the First and the Second Edition Likers. Now, all their systems are dead.

WG had the chance to learn from GWs mistakes. In fact... they repeat them. Second Editions should allways clarify and improve Rules, not change the important game mechanics. When i heard, another BP Edition is coming... my alert turned instantly red.

But first off all, Warlord Games should cut off their overloaded Range, concentrating more on 4-5 core Systems: Bolt Action, Antares, Black Powder, Hail Ceasar and Pike & Shot. Sorry, anything else is just to much. It's just... Healdline generating stuff, killing the players Base. But this is not WGs only mistake. A lot of manufacturers doing the same. The market get filled by new system stuff all the time. Thats poison for any success with a new Game system, if it has not a strong name like "Star Wars"...

I truly hope you can keep Antares alive with your son, Have much fun with it. Good luck!
