And again, apparently this result isn't from Cosmic Cube tinkering. Until it is, of course. It certainly feels like they're making it up as it goes along.

Which is why I feel like this storyline is starting to resemble a certain clone storyline from the same company. He's a clone! No, he's the clone! No...in fact, HE'S the clone.

My thought was "Emerald Twilight". You know, the one where Hal Jordan became a mass-murdering villain, sort-of-redeemed himself, then died and a new guy became Green Lantern. And people hated Kyle Rayner, the new guy, for years and years after that, not because he was a bad character, but because of the perception that the character they knew was being clumsily wrecked to push through a replacement.

And with Marvel's new generation thing, they've been good at avoiding that, because the characters being "replaced" are still being treated with respect and are mostly still around in some capacity. So there may well be a plan that'll make everything turn out okay in the end, but this does feel oddly tone-deaf.

IIRC, one of the early concepts for Crisis on Infinite Earths was that the Earth-1 Superman would die and then be "replaced" in the new unified Earth by the Earth-2 Superman...more or less returning the 'original' Golden Age Superman to the forefront.

Then with Rebirth, they finally sorta/kinda executed that plan, just with the post-Crisis Superman in place of the pre-Crisis Earth-2 Supes.

The second Steve Rogers strongly points to Marvel doing something similar here, leading into the upcoming Marvel Legacy thing (which also seems suspiciously like DC's Rebirth).

That sounds like eight levels of stupid. Wow.

Well, it certainly wouldn't be the first 'unboot' in comics history. This way comics fans get the 'old' Cap who wasn't a Hydra agent 'from the beginning' from before the big Secret Wars reboot.

It gets worse. DC's Rebirth event ended up merging the New 52 Superman and post-Crisis Superman so that there's a new Superman with a history including elements of both. It almost makes sense so long as you don't actually think about it.

Comics are a hard business. They keep bleeding customers, and yet any time the editors try to refresh them and do something different with classic characters, people tend to freak. They can make Warhammer fans look positively chill and open to change. You should see how some individuals still go on and on in forums about Superman losing the 'red underwear' component of his costume. It clearly bothers them every day of their lives.

Is it comics overall or DC/Marvel comics? This is not a criticism, but a question.

Overall, and...you didn't read a lot of comics, did you?

I surprised, because I figured twelve cents wouldn't put a dent in your childhood allowance at all!

Underwear is the most important part of any costume.

I technically go back to the 25 cent era, although most of my oldest books are in the 30 or 35 cent range. Yeah, I'm old.

Regarding underwear, no one freaked when Batman lost his! But then Batman fans were too busy reading better stories to care (I say this as a Superman fan). Plus red says "that's right, I'm wearing underwear over my pants and I want to draw attention to it" in a way that blue can't.

Lack of underwear is quite important for many costumes.

To be fair, most superhero costumes look sprayed on.

My childhood memories involved fun races (running from hyenodons); fun swims (swimming from giant crocodiles); and fun hide and seek games (evading bear dog ambushes). Or...my childhood memories are of motorcycles, traveling, and being an essential part of Dad's pit crew for his races.

The most iconic comic costumes I remember from my childhood involve a red and black striped jumper. Yanks in circus strongman outfits passed me by.

So I know Cap being Hydra is being discussed, but what about this?

I wonder if it'll be excused as mind control. They've also shown Thor and Vision and Scarlet Witch fighting along side Hydra Cap.
