Well I didn't think I was being an ass, and I was referring to the angels of death shirt: hadn't seen the iron & blood shirts.

Clearly, "Angels of Death" is a straight lift from the blurb on the new space marine codex. It's probably not trademarked, but the source is obvious. Similarly, the unit type symbols and double headed Aquila are so similar as to exemplify rather well *my* judgement line on copying. If you are "tweaking" to make "just enough difference to avoid legal action" (MY words) then you're ripping off someone else's work, legal or not. By that token, I prefer the not blood angels and not iron hands shirts. They at least appear to have something original, if derivative, about them.

I'm not trying to break new ground here. Just make some recognizable designs that people may like.

Hell, most of the "Troop" symbols are more recognizable as icons used in networking diagrams.

I don't like the "not" ones; they are potentially too close for you to get a C & D, but I just don't find them that appealing, somehow.

I thinking I've got it - I dislike shirts that are square graphic on the front - so it just looks like an image / clip art that's been home-printed on a tshirt (my mom did that a lot for school projects), rather than one that's been designed specifically for a tshirt, so it's a bit jarring.

The ones that are just text/graphics without the A4 sheet outline look a lot more professional (to me).

Yea, I'm bothered by the square and flat edges also. That's why I like to burn away the side or try to blend them down so they don't have that box look/effect.
