I would think you're assuming that people play wysiwyg.
That has nothing to do with my post. "Because WYSIWYG" is not a magical "therefor my argument is better" point to include.

Lots of people don't and they chop and change all of the equipment, move models between squads, etc. They are starting from nothing every time they write an army list.
It's still not hard.

A tactical marine is 13 points. A flamer is 9 points. A combiflamer is 11 points. (5*13)+9+11=85 points. Move the combiflamer over to a captain. It's still 11 points. Move it over to a sternguard squad. It's still 11 points. Powerfist on a sarge is 12 points. Move it over to a captain and it's still 12 points. Move it over to a terminator and it's still 12 points. Thunder hammers are the only exception to this, and even then it's a simple general rule that characters pay +5 points for thunder hammers.

It's the same level of basic mental math that you do if you go out and buy groceries.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I suggested that because your comment implied that working out the cost of a unit is something you do once when preparing the models.

It... doesn't really take much time to tally up points. Certainly takes far less time than actually assembling and painting the miniatures in question, and can easily be done while waiting for the minis to dry.

For people that play WYSIWYG then that is the case and it does make points much easier.

For quickly assembling an army list from scratch then power levels are much easier, not that points are especially difficult.
