What if you seperate the two sides with about an inch of solid foam board ? Widen out the whole fuselage and add a metric butt-load of Dakka into the nose! Then ditch the cockpit glass in favour of a nice roll-cage style steel mesh thingy.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! It really helped!

I know what you all mean about the Mig 21. You could probably just base that model straight out of the box and everyone would assume it is an Ork flyer. That's specifically why I didn't go with that model as a base as I wanted to do something a little more unique. Ah well, so much for that.

After playing with various mock-ups in Photoshop, I settled on a design that composites a lot of your ideas. The general idea is to beef up the front of the plane around the air intakes specifically and make it more aggressive looking rather than so sleek. After a good amount of preliminary work yesterday, I'm already much happier with the direction this is going.

Here are some pictures of what I have done so far. I have only taken the first steps in changing the front profile, so expect a lot more work done there in the next update. Oh and in case you were wondering, those orange things are the start of vector thrust nozzles.

If you can add some plates to the nose, make it a little bumpier, I think that'd go a long way. Otherwise, lookin' ACE!

I like it, dekinitely more orky. Maybe add a patched up bit on the nose?

Since the last update, I've been making sketches and cutting out bits of cardboard to tack on all trying to figure out the best way to orkify the silhouette. I've made progress, but it has been slow and has gone through a couple different iterations.

I totally agree with you guys about plating the nose. I think that would certainly go a long way in the right direction. I have tried a couple different patterns and ideas and nothing has really felt right yet. The current plan is to continue with the ideas I have that I really like and revisit the nose as the plane comes together more. Keep the C&C coming, it has been really helpful!

The current state of affairs:

Since the last update, I have been working on a lot of small additions that were originally planned while I continued to think about some of the blank spots on the model and tinker with ideas. I built skid plates for the bottom (which are just tacked on), started building up the cockpit structure, added the targeting cameras to the bottom of the nose, adjusted the struts for the gattlers, and just barely started detailing the main rear engine. Now at last for the first time I have a good mental idea of what the finished model will look like so now it comes down to executing the final steps.

And then come the many many rivets... Here are some progress pictures highlighting the progress and as always C&C is welcome!

Have fun with the rivets!

It is finished! After 3 months of periodic building, "Da Komit" is finished!

I am super excited to get out my brushes and start painting. Because this model challenged me as a build, I want to challenge myself with the painting as well. For the main paint scheme, I am thinking dirty white with orange and grey as secondary colors (honestly, rather similar to the unpainted model). Since the plane is a dive bomber from space, I really wanted to push myself in the area of weathering. I am thinking scorch marks or a burnt effect along the front of the plane, chip marks and gouges from hitting debris on reentry, and soot and oil effects on the engines. If anyone has any advice on how to do that or know of any tutorials, I would greatly appreciate it the help! Weathering advice in general would be awesome too because I have done it only once before.

Without further ado, "Da Komit":

This deserves a bump. Good gravy what a badass plane! The problem is it looks supreme but itll be shot off the table in a turn or two and that just sucks!

I love it when I find more blogs with ork stuff on them. Great work so far with the kit bashing and conversions. I really like the dakka jet. I can't believe how great your first time sculpting came out. New jet is looking sweet, but my favorite is probably the giant flying engine because it's so orky.

Thanks everyone! I really do appreciate the comments and I am glad people are enjoying my work!

Today, I started painting on a bunch of little test scraps I glued together out of plasticard leftovers. After experimenting with a bunch of different painting formulas, I think I have a pretty good idea on how I want to proceed. I wasn't able to find any good scorch mark tutorials, so I burned some paper and tried my best to copy it. I like the result, but would still greatly appreciate any C&C that anyone can offer.

In other news, the glue barely had dried on da Komit before I already started thinking about my next big project. Since Necromunda came out, I have been wanting to join in on the fun. After a bit of puzzling, I thought how cool it would be to build a Matrix-like hovercraft to roam through the Underhive full of techno-ganger Orks.
"Oi! Wot's all dis I hear about Mork's tricks?"
"Nuthin' boss, jus' some git who thinks he's brutally cunnin'."
"Hah, stupid git..."

It's been a long time coming, but Da Komit is finally finished! I am pleased overall with the outcome. Certain aspects could have turned out better, but considering how many new techniques I tried out I am very pleased. And so without further ado:

The rest of the detail shots:
Spoiler:

C&C is welcome, particularly on ways to improve the scorch mark effect which I am only about 80% sold on currently.

As I mentioned in my last post, my next big project is likely building an Ork Matrix hovercraft. I am still in the design phase and I'm not sure how I want to go about it. Then, there is the next member of Meatier Skwadron in which a looted Belicosa Volcano Cannon from a Warlord Titan will feature heavily. Not to mention, I have ideas to revamp my seaplane-esque flying battefortress and finish it off. Decisions decisions...

This f4 is so awesome. If this was an actual kit or I had the skills you do (I don't buy a long shot) I would totally start an ork army

Absolutely stunning! What an achievement. The white paint job too, that's quite a fresh look for an ork machine.

Oh boy, what an awesome build. I just got back into building orkstuff after a year off. Just working on an Ork Landa. After that is done, I'd like to give it a try to copy your awesome Komit.
Can't wait to see some new stuff of yours. Keep it up!!!

Great stuff and wonderful inspiration.

Looks like you put the break to good effect, liking the paintjob and weathering on Da Komet.
