Standard fare in the States though. Rarely do restaurants give you proper chips, and I've never seen anywhere serve mushy peas.

I think the key thing for anyone visiting the UK is do NOT go to a pub for fish and chips; they are not the real deal. Grab a local and ask them for the nearest decent chippy, they'll see you right.

My Grandparents have always had fish fries in the summer for their parties. Fried Catfish and thick cut fries all day. So many people came out for it, it was ridiculous.

Also delicious! Catfish, when done properly, is amazing.

Fish&Chips is allright if you don't mind it literally dripping with fat.

Just, for the love of all that's good, leave the vinegar off the chips. That's just repulsive.

Got to have vinegar on your chips! Helps the salt stick!

As an aside, do not ever, and I'm going to repeat that, DO NOT EVER ask for vinegar in Germany.

1. They follow the Dutch custom of mayo, and

2. I'll let a german member of dakka explain.

So what type of fish is in fish and chips?

It changes from year to year. Honestly.

As EU members, we were part of the Common fisheries policy, so there was quotas, and because of environmental concerns, if a particular fish species was having a hard time, you weren't allowed to catch it.

Also, in the 1970s, Britain had the Cod wars against Iceland. I think Britain lost that war

Don't mess with Iceland. Frazz.

But yeah, it's complicated.

But fish and chips is a wonderful meal.

Even older.

And fish chips. Curry sauce.

I love fish n chips. Some day I'd love to get to the U.K. And have the real kind. I think it's always been cod when I get it. My fiancé is from Wisconsin and she always talks about how they went to fish frys every weekend growing up where everyone had all you can eat fish n chips

Yeah, that was bad phrasing on my part.
It's technically a chain, but it's only two stores, and it's not snobby, just well above what you get at your regular fish'n'chip place.

Oh okay. Almost got exited for a minute. My local chippies are almost exclusively run by asian families who do not know how to season *anything* (fish/burgers/souvs). Or how to toast a burger bun. Make decent batter though.

I've had the pleasure of enjoying both of the famous shops in Anstruther, The Wee Chippy is better for the fish, t'other for the chips

Despite living there for <redacted>5 years, I never tried the Blue Lagoon chippy near central station in glasgow until last night; it's *profoundly* good.

Doemenic's in Paisley across from the station is adequate, but the sit-in chippy near the University is worth a trip.

In Largs, The Wee Plaice is the best in the town.

In England, the filthy heathens sacrifice most of the menu to offer multiple types of white fish (Haddock, Huss, Plaice etc), despite all that tasting the same. They even leave the skin on the fish. THEY LEAVE. THE SKIN. ON.

And skinning a fish is so satisfying. It's just got the right level of resistance to make it visceral without it being a faff.

Mind you, a selection of fish is no bad thing. Just be nice if they could discover King Rib, Smoked Sausage, Deep Fried Pizza etc for even moar variety!

Blue Lagoon at central station as mentioned;

Paolo's on the far side of Hillhead is worthwhile.

There used to be a really good one near where the transport museum is now, but I can't find it.

If you're not aware, GW glasgow is 40k on thursdays and sigmar on tuesdays; juniors on sundays.

White, meaty fish.

In Edinburgh, it's literally just 'Fish' on the menu. Could be Cod, could be Haddock, could Pollock.

In England, the filthy heathens sacrifice most of the menu to offer multiple types of white fish (Haddock, Huss, Plaice etc), despite all that tasting the same. They even leave the skin on the fish. THEY LEAVE. THE SKIN. ON.

And they wouldn't know what a Supper was if you explained it to them.

Whenever I'm up, usual order on the first day is Jumbo Haggis Supper and Smoked Sausage on the side, loads of salt, loads of sauce.

You should've seen the look on an English colleague's face when I took him into a chippie, he ordered a hamburger and chips and the burger was battered. And yes, the skin thing is an abomination. Also, did you know the sassenachs don't do pakora, spicy onions of proper-sized nan bread in curry restaurants? wrong 'uns, the lot of them.

My current favourite is a special fish supper (i.e. done in orange breadcrumbs rather than batter), with a crispy roll (for making a chip butty) and a couple of pickled onions. with salt and vinegar, because the west coast is the civilised side of the country. An ex-colleague invented the "Scottish surf & turf"; a fish supper and a haggis supper split between two people (so half a haggis and a fish fillet each) on our monthly "fish tea Wednesdays".

edit: the Blue Lagoon burning down must've been a blessing in disguise; I used to go to the one under the Hielanman's Umbrella (i.e Argyle Street, under Central Station) as a nipper on the way back from GW in Queen Street on Thursday nights, and it was legendarily poor. If you want a choice of specific fish, the Chippy Doon the Lane (down a lane off Buchanan Street) is a sit-down chippy that's pretty good.

I'll rate haggis, absolutely brilliant for me.

I'm not really a fish person, but there's something good about a proppa fish-and-chips. Of course, I'll tend to take the sausage over fish, but I'll never turn it down.

Speaking of which, anyone know a good chippie in Southend?

They/them

Its a shame, but the shop in Pittenweem was much better than Anstruther. At least it was until the owner died and his family sold the shop on. The new owners thought they could trade on the old reputation. It didn't last.

Cheers

Best ones are in the west end in my book: the Philidelphia right beside Kelvinbridge subway station is easily the best in the city and Old Salty on Byers road is a decent if overpriced sit in place. Almost everything in the city centre is terrible.

That's pretty variable. Most of the places on the curry mile in Manchester, in Brum, and on Brick Lane are proper and do the above. It does catch you by surprise when someone presents you with hand-sized nan, though.

Growing up on Lake Erie fish and chips is a common dish. Perch, walleye, and whitefish are the most common. My personal favorite is smelt, when I was a kid millions and millions ran the creek behind my house. Pollution and development destroyed that..

While I've never been to the UK for comparison, I've found that coastal areas of the US with access to white fish can do a pretty decent job of fish and chips. . . I think it was one thing that was well exported via New England

It's funny, while there's virtually no taste difference between white fishes, there is a texture difference (which is more noticeable if you're not battering it, and instead do more knife/fork dishes)
