A game that hooked me surprisingly was Persona 5. Now, I am not the biggest JRPG fan. I dislike grinding too much for levels, and though I have beaten a select few because I found the story/characters interesting, it was never a genre I really liked. I much preferred Strategy games where the missions are scaled to where you are in the game such as XCOM or my personal favourite franchise, Fire Emblem. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing worse than an easy game, but a game where there's always a small chance of winning is so much better than "you can totally beat this boss, IF you put in 2 hours of grinding".

Then comes Persona 5. I played a little bit of Persona 4 Golden by borrowing a Vita, but I really didn't like it. Nothing resonated with me, and that JRPG style was not my cup of tea. Persona 5 came out months later, being praised all over as one of the best JRPGs of all time. One of my mates was a long time fan of the franchise, so one day I was at his house where he was playing the new Persona 5. At this point I had never owned a PS4 and had no intention of getting one, but as he explained what was going on, I was interested. The characters seemed great, and it had a great plot to boot. I then tried it out for myself.

Starting the game was a blast, all the characters were very well written with fantastic voice acting to boot, and the intro shrouded with mystery was great, but I was really worried when I got to the 1st Palace (a dungeon essentially). I thought I would dislike the battle system just because it was a JRPG. I continued expecting the worst, but then the battle theme played for the first time - Last Surprise.

I had never heard such a battle theme before, but it fit the game perfectly. I must have been sat there for a couple minutes just listening to the music. Then I tried the battle system, which was fluid and had smooth animations throughout. That is when I decided I had to get a PS4 with this game.

Right now I'm 50hrs into the game, but not even halfway through the game. I have not had to grind, and I actively look for fights instead of avoiding them. It has been just the right level of difficulty, and the story is just the icing on the cake.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

The Witcher 3. I had owned the first two games for a long time, but I could never really get in to the first one. I got the 3rd for $1 or something when I got my video card, when the game first came out. Decided to give it a shot. Loved every second of it. Played about 80 hours before my save file was corrupted. Went back and finished the first two before finishing the 3rd. Worth every second, plan on doing it again in the near future.

I remember playing Kingdom Hearts when it first came out. Not at all what I was expecting. Loved every second of it. So much that when my roommate told me that he had played all of the handheld games but not 1 and 2, I found copies for him to play and watched him play through it. Still awesome stuff. Still waiting on 3!

Mass Effect 1 and by extension 2 and 3. Originally bought ME1 on a friends suggestion and just couldn't get into it. Came back to it a bit later when I was bored and fell in love with the characters, story, agh! So many playthroughs.

Grim Dawn also - wasn't real keen on a Diablo clone (mainly because PoE sucks ass and Torchlight 2 gets no love anymore), but man...lemme tell you something - that game is badass. A true gem of action RPGs; high quality story, excellent character progression, and it doesn't feel ANYTHING like it's brethren. I'm really happy the dev's saw fit to release a DLC for it too!

Baldurs Gate. I saw a friend play it back in the end 90's maybe start 2000?. Thought it looked cool and went and bought it myself.
Little did i know how much i fell in love with that game. I used the next 5 years on that game alone. Its still one of the best games ive ever played to this day and i fell in love in Bioware games from that day on.

I still play the game from time to time on Steam and still suggest this game to all of my friends who wanna try an RPG game.

If you wanna try a new game whom'ever read this, go give Baldurs Gate a try, its an amazing game.

The Orange Box

I was just a kid when half-life 2 was released on PC and I was more into Gameboy at that age. Didn't even know what Valve was other than a plumbing mechanism. When I was a teenager I bought the xbox 360 and rented the orange box when it was released. Back when Blockbuster was a thing. Loved every single game it offered. I enjoyed it so much that I eventually went back and bought the game so I could keep playing. Still wish an updated half-life would be released on console, but I doubt that will happen.

Morrowind. I read an article about an open world fantasy blah blah blah but couldnt remember it. So I asked the game store I went to back in the day and the guy said it sorta sounded like Morrowind just out on Xbox. It certainly wasnt what I was asking about but thought it sounded cool and so I gave it a go.
I literally played religiously for a year and a half before its grip let me go. I love that game still and remember fondly trying to bend the limits of that game on xbox with some pretty awesome results on spells and enchantments and the like.

World of Warcraft. Yes, I know, I know, but hear me out here. I have tested a lot of MMOs, from SWTOR to LOTRO, but none has had gameplay so smooth, so polished and so detailed yet simple to grasp. I always keep coming back.

The game is popular for a reason.

Hearts of Iron 2 was a random game I torrented back in ~2005 without actually knowing anything about it.

Now my steam account is packed with grand strategy games from the same developer with thousands of hours across several titles - although primarily Europa Universalis IV.

Saint’s Row - I just love how much stupid fun this series is, especially in ther third and fourth games. It can sometimes be really over-the-top and chuck realism out of the window to make something more fun (like punching an enemy and grabbing a parachute while flying through an airplane).

Left 4 Dead - I’m actually very shy, and normally do not play multiplayer games online. Actually, most of my experiences with this game have been relativaly pleasant, with polite and cooperative teammates. It’s also gotten me to open up more to playing online, and I’m hoping to hop into Killing Floor and Payday to see what happens.

The Forest - This thing is probably one of the most intimidating games I’ve played. I only bought it to play with a friend, but I fell in love with how well the atmosphere was put together.

WoW hooks me sufficiently to keep coming back to it, but it does have a problem with severe doldrums.

I am looking forward to the 7.5 patch where they're apparently going to rework leveling numbers so it isn't so ridiculously effortless and characters don't outlevel zones less than a third of the way through them.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I'd probably say Hearthstone. A friend recommended it to me since he knew I liked Magic: The Gathering. I just gave it a try one night and I was hooked. I still haven't paid a penny of real life money into it, but I've got a decent collection of cards and have a lot of fun.

Another one is RuneScape. When I was a freshman in college, I saw someone playing it and thought it looked interesting. When I actually started playing, I found it so addictive that my grades actually suffered a little bit. I know, the game has its share of critics (mostly WoW players who think it's lame), but I think it is fun and it has continued to hang around despite being inferior to some other MMO games, and the developers continue to add new content and graphical updates.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

In terms of MMOs, the only one that really got me was City of Heroes. Sad to see it close down and sadder still that nothing has really filled the void.

Mostly for me it was that there was no cosmetics to the loot and players spent so much effort on costume and backstory. It was really easy to see who might be interesting to talk to and as a result I made more friends in that game than any MMO since; largely because the rest of them have so much of a workplace feel to them.

Limiting myself only to "proper" computer games and not mobile titles, sorted by amount of time/replays in last two decades:

- X-COM, pretty much whole series, but I especially like TFTD (it was my first). IMHO no other in the series caught terror of alien invasion as well as deep sea night missions. Just writing this makes me want to play it again

- Fallout 1 & 2 - I played Fallout 2 more times than I can remember and no two games were alike.

- M.A.X. - IMHO the best single player campaign in a turn based strategy

- Bioshock series - for gameplay, narrative and total immersion (both meanings of immersion ). I'm listening to soundtrack from this game for half a day today. System Shock 2 follows closely.

Academagica.

I hate visual novels. I hate time management, especially turn based time management games.

This one was very different. Every choice was hard to determine the outcome. My stats, event eh random ones could matter. The
plot twists were interesting.

I played it through twice. I'm afraid to try it again because it's hard to stop.

Cozy cockpit of an Imperial Knight

Quite a few when I took the time to sit down and think it over. The ones that stick out the most for me are..

Prey is on top of the list right now, something I picked up on a whim after ignoring all press and reviews on it for a good while. It itched a certain scratch I had rather nicely.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is another game that hooked me. I played the free weekend and loved it enough to pre-order the gold edition without a second thought. I still play it every now and then, just to cruise the massive map or replay a mission or two for gaks and giggles. Love it.

Last year I got VA-11 Hall-A as a gift, which is a simple enough game where all you do is mix drinks and listen to people and their problems, but it has an excellent vibe to it, not to mention a damned good story where the type of drink you serve can have an impact on the story itself.

Stardew Valley I picked up shortly after its release on Steam, feeling like I needed something whimsical (how wrong I was there) to waste some time on. I love this game enough to have bought the official almanac and I'm still avidly awaiting the eventual coop release for this one.

The most recent one for me is Rainbow Six Siege, which I played during the free weekend and liked enough to end up purchasing the game and both season passes (while on sale of course). I don't do online gaming, but I find the terrorist hunt most satisfying and with all the operators available to me, it'll be some time before the game grows boring.

Honorary mention goes to Payday 2, which is a game I've sunk a lot of time into (740 hrs is scrub numbers for some folks out there, but my time is finite so this is a lot for me) and something I can happily pick up once every few months, play it for a solid few weeks, then uninstall again, only to repeat it later down the road again.
