I think he means a mere +1 to a situational save is not worth the points I'd spend. Note that he didn't say the Combi-weapon was a good idea either.

In anycase I think if I'm gonna build him, he's just getting the hammer (so I can easily change him into a Rune Priest later if I need to), but he's going back in the box until the codex drops since I managed to grab something else fun in the meantime (a box of White Lions).

Paying 15 points just to have a 3+ invuln for a character that can't be targeted unless he's the closest model, with a stock 4+ invuln, 3+ armor and 5-7 wounds is simply a bad idea.

It's really unusual to have a lord killed by shooting, unless the opponent has already decimated the SW army, and in that case the game is probably doomed anyway.

Thank you, you pretty much nailed it and I apologise to Slayer-Fan for not detailing it better my first time around.
An extra Grey Hunter, Blood Claw, Wolf Scout, Fen Wolf or Cyber Wolf would be a much better way of spending fifteen points than a +1 to your invulnerable save and you'd be shocked at how many armies can throw out mortal wounds like candy making all invulnerable saves irrelevant, better to have more wounds when that happens.
As for the gun of choice I don't disagree at all and never said I did.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

I just meant that you weren't directly defending my point, but just pointing out that the shield was a bit of a waste.

In anycase I forgot he came with a Master Crafted Boltgun, but would you recommend giving him a Plasma Pistol or Combi Plasma, or is the bolter fine and his priority should be trying to stay out of enemy range?

Fair enough.
If you're running a Bolt Pistol, Combi-Plasma, Plasma Pistol, Combi-Bolter/Storm-Bolter, Master-Crafted Bolter or Combi-Melta I think you've chosen an excellent ranged weapon for the Wolf Lord, my only question would be "What are you planning on killing with it?" to make sure you know where the most optimal killing ranges are for your weapon of choice.

I'm slightly torn on who he will be sticking with. My Grey Hunters will likely be moving up the board to get closer and will be armed with plasma guns, while my Long Fangs were planned to be given Missile Launchers (although given that splitfire is now on everything, I might make 3 units of long fangs with 3 of 4 different weapons spread equally among each) so they would be sitting back and shooting. Not sure which one the wolf Lord should follow as if he's with the longfangs, the Mastercrafted bolter might be better since he won't get to shoot all that much anyways, while if he's up with the grey hunters he's better off with a combi-plasma to add another plasma gun to the unit.

Split fire is a good thing, but if you aim at different targets you lose some re-roll of 1s, unless you have a lord or bjorn nearby. I still use long fangs with the same weapon, tipycally lascannons.

Combination of Lascanons and Missile Launchers for me - just in case you need to shoot an infantry unit.

Sounds like you'll be swapping him up a bit, in that case I'd probably recommend the combi-plasma or master-crafted bolter depending on points you can spare just so he's useful at more ranges.
