Probably work

I didn't from the beginning. Of course, doing so resulted in a few squads of hideously painted guardsmen and some god-awful green and brown camo smeared across my tanks.

People told me the paint scheme was "interesting". Finally, one of my friends that got into 40k (and knew I was colorblind) straight up told me my color combinations were atrocious. I asked how, and the descriptors used for the colors in his response were something along the lines of "puke green on gak brown". Looked fine to me at the time though.

I'm much more careful about that kind of stuff now, but I still don't paint like GW says to.

My first deviation was my first SW unit. I tried to paint them that bluish-gray, but they came out too blue. So I repainted armor pieces in gray such as the boots, the shoulder pads, knee and elbow pads, etc. and ended up with 2-tone SW
LOL

We're gonna need another Timmy!

I wanted my Guardsmen to look like penal troopers, so I opted for orange jump suits. I couldn't decide what colour to make the armour, so I went with white. I painted, and painted, and painted... took them to GW and someone looked at them and said...

"Are those supposed to be Rebel pilots?"

"Um, they're supposed to be Penal Legion."

"They look like Rebel Pilots."

".... They do look like Rebel Pilots."

Now it's pretty much GW schemes or something close to it. I just don't have an eye for colour schemes.

There are very few GW colour schemes I actually like, most look rather garish to me. I started painting using my own colour schemes, and will continue to do so.

I've found that when I deviate from GW colours my paint schemes look really odd. I guess I don't have a good eye for colour.
