@ Z-Ray: Thanks. I have a soft spot for Hero Quest for the same reason Yours is looking like it will be very cool, and useful when you're done. I especially like the drain.

@Fango: Thanks! I really appreciate the encouragement. I've done a bit more work on them. Been very busy and tired from my job.

The treasure chests in the upper left are from Super Dungeon Explore. I've been looking at them to see different styles of treasure chest. I sculpted more wood texture (very bottom is the new one) and the beginnings of the top of the treasure chest that I'm trying to make completely from scratch (right above it).

OK, decided to have a go at this for the first time, let's see what happens...

I started out with some templates based on the old Necromunda stuff as well. Wanted to get the sense of shape and scale to start with, but where it goes from there will be quite different! It'll be used in Nucromunda when I get it, and probably in an Inq28 game after Christmas as well.

Not got too much experience of this so any criticism welcome. Cheers!

Welcome Apollinaire! Looking good so far. I recognize those shapes. It looks like you are using corrugated cardboard for some of the parts. While it can offer a bit more structure/support, it tends to show the ribbed texture and any creases or damage that was done to the box before cutting it up can be hard to cover up in the final product. I would recommend using cereal or cracker box card, like you did for the larger piece in the bottom right of your photo. and maybe even double or triple the thickness with layers to get your rigidity...overall, I think you'll be happy with the finished surface. Alternatively, you could use styrene sheet if you want the rigidity while having a thinner material (though it is a little more pricey than recycled cardboard).

@Syro_ - Looking good, I'm loving all of the progress updates!

@Graven - Thanks for sharing that. Is it one of your own creations? I have Mansions of Madness 2nd edition, so I may have to dig my copy out for some more inspiration.

@All - So, would you all like to see me work on a Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire board? Or a Necromunda tower platform?

Personally, I'd like to see what you can do with the Shadespire boards.
I started making some terrain hexes (but was distracted by the whole Necro Walls thing.)

Mostly, on my phone.

Definitely an underworlds board. Yeah, a mix and match of this and that. I started painting the minis and just went from the with all the scenery.

I've not gotten much done atm - but I did get a foam cutter in ^_^ not really a necessity, just a fun thing. Though I figure it'll come in very handy for especially straight bits, like stairs and whatnot.

I finally started my piece. Definitely going down the west coast customs vibe rather than the pimping old board games. All the scratch built stuff is looking great so far lads

Thanks for the welcome and the advice, Fango. Had a day off work today so made a bit of progress and did some experimenting, but still a long way to go. I'll post some WIP pics when I get a bit further along.
Really enjoying all the bits and pieces posted on this thread so far, great work guys!

Thanks Fango, I try to update as often as I can in the hopes that I can help keep this contest thread on the first page of the Painting and Modeling section. That way more people are likely to see it and get interested in joining
That shadespire board also sounds interesting to me.

@Boundless, Guildenstern, and Apollinare, I'm looking forward to seeing your stuff.

I worked a little more on the treasure chests, built the second chest in two pieces in case I want to try to figure out how to make it open with a functioning hinge. I also made what will be the metal bands on the lid of my completely hand sculpted treasure chest.

does it have to be a miniature game? Could it be a normal board game?

@Syro_ - nice progress, keep em coming!

@Apollinaire - Awesome, cant wait to see your progress. Keep at it, practice definitely makes major improvements at the very least, if not perfect!

@Z-Ray, Graven, and Syro_ - Underworlds: Shadespire board it is!

@Maddok_Death - Yes! You can do Candy Land, if your want. In fact, that would actually be really cool to see!

Ok, I've narrowed it down to one of these two boards (my favorite of the four options). I've toyed with the idea of making a 3D version that is usable with Shadespire...but really, in the end I'd be destroying all of the lovely hard work I did by drawing or carving hexes on to it. Then I thought of just making 3D bits that sat only in the impassible terrain hexes...and while this would make the game slightly cooler to look at, the hexes don't line up all that well with the terrain elements, and I'm stuck with some awkward looking terrain bits as the hex edges slice through the pillars, walls, statues, blocks, etc. I've also thought about making 3D versions of the objectives, but the figures wouldn't be able to stand on them very well, so ultimately I've decided the best way to play Shadespire is on the beautiful 2D boards with 2D objectives.

TLDR: I've decided to attempt a faithful reproduction of one of the two boards below to use as terrain in a Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Shadespire themed battle board.

What do you all think?

These look really nice! What kit did that big cluster of tech come from hanging off the large wall? Is that from a Tau kit?

Agreed!

This is some really good progress! Keep the progress pics coming! I cant wait to see this with some paint on it.

Lets see it!

@everyone - Which of the two Shapdespire boards, in my post above, would you rather see me work on?

@fango either board would be very cool to see. I guess the broken statue head on the turquoise board would be a helluva challenge

@Apollinaire, Already great texture and variety where the models will be moving around. Keep it up!

So much for the regular progress updates I was trying for, I've bene so busy and exhausted from work, I don't think I've worked on my entry for around a week. I finally did a little bit tonight.

With some research, I feel like the Hero Quest tables, look a great deal like trestle tables. I found this with an image search and have used it as my main piece of inspiration.

I sculpted what will be the side pieces/legs of the tables. It's still wet in this pic, but hopefully when it dries and I clean it up, it will look great.

@Fango The big machinery bit is actually from one of the Mantic industrial battlezones, I don't know which kit I got it from the Deadzone 2 Kickstarter.

I've almost finished detailing the walls, just one more section to go and then I can start painting.

@Apollinaire - Yes that statue will be challenging, but not as challenging as modelling that shade glass...I'm in for a grueling project with that one!

@Syro_ - very cool, what is the sculpting medium you are using?

@Z-Ray - I can't wait to see your first set of walls completed. Really great detail and gubbins work.

I think I've decided to go with the top one. Any advice you guys have for making the shadeglass?

@ Fango
You could try smashing up a CD case.

Randomly daubed with diluted blue, green and purple washes, then gloss varnished could give an interesting effect.

i'd probably also use some artists gloss gel medium (dries clear)
to make the flat surfaces a little more uneven and maby even some clear glitter paint or artist's iridescent medium to give some shimmer too. but that would need some experimenting with.

@Fango, I've been mixing together a combination of green stuff with apoxie sculpt. Usually 1 part green stuff to around 4 parts apoxie sculpt.

I made this base for the fireplace last night, but the glue wasn't dry enough for pictures. I'm hoping all of you will help me pick which side would look better as the front of the piece. The back and sides will be getting partially/completely covered in layers of "brick" and wont stay particularly visible. Thanks

Fantastic work here guys and dolls.

For stain glass and other effects have a look at nail polish, painted over blister pack material.

Loving all the updates on here!

Here are a couple more WIP photos from me... Just 300,000 more rivets to do, bit more cabling on the communications array, then I can get some paint on.

BLUE!

I ran out of paint 2/3 of the way through, will have to hit up the hobby shop tomorow for some more.

why blue? I like to think the original builders cared about the mental well being of the inhabitants and went with a cheerful sky blue colour scheme...and then I'll layer on 10,000 years of filth and grimdark over the top
