I don't care what kind of list someone has (especially in a tournament), it doesn't excuse being a douche to them if they're acting like a decent person otherwise. If you don't want to play against someone, don't. That's your choice. But thinking it makes you morally superior in some way pretty much makes you the TFG instead of the guy with the cheese list.

I've not had any issues but then I avoid tournaments like the plague.

When it comes to players and people acting poorly I have a tendency to make a mental note and just avoid playing with them or dealing with them in future.

In saying that though, I will always do my utmost to be polite, civil and conduct myself in the manner which I wish to be treated. I will not debase myself to their level.

Like many have stated, the tournament scene is rarely representational of the actual local gaming scene. Personally I only take part in casual or thematic games.

Don't let it put you off. If you enjoy the game and the hobby then you shouldn't let a couple of people with poor attitudes dissuade you from taking part. Like all walks of life, there are those who conduct themselves civilly and those who fail to conduct themselves in a manner which is appropriate for their surroundings.

As far as I am concerned, unless the reason for the roll has been clearly stated, with the dice rolled for all to see, any rolling done is irrelevant to the game. Can't be doing with that nonsense, in either a casual or tournament game.

The polite thing to do if you want to roll quickly is to roll your dice and start removing all the misses. It's only your loss if you accidentally remove a successful roll and the other player doesn't need confirmation for the missed rolls. That way the other player can count the successful rolls quicker (it's what's left on the table). Of course it depends on how much supervision you want to have over each other's rolls, like with friends you would do the same but trust them to not cheat while you would probably be a bit more attentive in a tournament or when you don't know who you are playing against.

OP- To be clear your list does meet donkey cave critiria.

However, I'll give you a pass. This is the TOs fault for not managing expectations for the attendees. If the locals dont like LoWs write the rules of engagement to address this.

Show up with any book legal 2k list and roll dice typically doesnt turn out well.

You came into contact with a bunch of human beings. Most were decent, friendly, good fun and there were a couple of people you didn't like? Sounds like life, rather than a 40k or 40k tournament specific thing.

Yeah, all of those lists sound terrible, and exactly why I also avoid tourneys.

One of my opponents took a look at my list, made a minor complaint, and then basically refused to talk the rest of the game. After I got the first turn he intentionally threw the game, let me table him, then refused to shake my hand. We parted ways with him making a remark about my "cheap" list and how no one could expect to win against it. (I lost a majority of my games).

Good behavior was supposed to be enforced. However, being the outsider there, I didn't want to make too big of a stink. At least one of the guys seemed to be in the "popular" crowd. I was thinking of trying to join the local gaming group, and hope that a take-all comers fun list would be more accepted, but now I don't know.

So, am I over reacting, or should I have stood up for myself a little better?

There are two or three ways that you could take this.

1) You walked into a "Private Sandbox" situation, where a bunch of Pals" run the shop, because they are there all the time. They play together, and in this one, its a close environment, that you have to earn your way into the group/ store play area.

2) You walked into a situation with a TFG list and you just got tagged as such. Either intentionally, or unintentionally, it is going to depend on how you want to proceed.

3) You met the resident jagoff, and he was just a bad sport because he likes winning by tabling all of the newbs that play in the store...

Your best bet is to proceed with eyes open ears open, mouth shut for a little bit. Get their feel, and make a judgment call on your next move.

I pretty much have the same way of thinking as this. Gaming is a social experience - in the same way you won't get on with everyone well enough to go down to the pub for a drink, not everyone will be an enjoyable opponent.

That being said there are basic levels of politeness, manners etc that you should expect even from a pick up game against an unknown opponent. These days if I come up against someone that falls short I'll be honest I just focus on getting the game finished as quickly as possible, move on to the next one and note not to play that person again.

There is other behaviour that I don't find too good but other people might not mind. 'Running up the score' for instance. Saw a game of Blood Bowl a while ago where one player was up comfortably, other guy had about 3 players left on the pitch, one of whom was on the floor and surrounded by 9 players fouling him while another player was holding the ball and stopped 1 space from the end zone. In another game of Dreadball again player winning comfortably shrugged and did a back-block on an opponent as a final throwaway action of the game, killed the player and effectively knocked him out of the league.
Technically both events were within the rules of the game, but not something I would class as sporting, and would actually put me off playing those people as its not something I would do myself.

I just stopped ever playing tournaments. It was a fun ride while it lasted. I had a 3rd round ticket for 'Ard Boyz the second year, but my vacation got canceled at work.

However from 4th edition until I stopped mid 6th edition I had just had enough of the tournaments. It's basically just a exercise of people cheating and me trying to catch them cheating.

It was a rare game when that wasn't the case and generally you could tell the other person came with the intent to just have fun. Those games are enjoyable, but they get romped on all day, and you never see them again.
