Great that more people are joining in! The more the merrier! I'll update the OP with all of you who have just joined tomorrow!

My first goal for this challenge is to get at least 10 ships or pieces of terrain from my Dreadfleet UFO painted during January. I've just finished the elf ship.

Right, a week in and I've begun:

PtP: 2-1 - might even angle 3 to 1. However, how do you count Epic models? I ask as I currently have a 6 razorbacks and 2 rhinos in progress!

Area 51: For this, I may have to define this as models that I have at least been primed. Main reason is because I have an absolute ton of assembled models. I tend to assemble when bored as it can be quite productive. Don't get to prime until the humidity drops.

Selling: Nothing flogged as yet.

Kickstarters: Have a few on order from previous years but nothing as yet. I won't count purchases from previous years as they've already been paid for.

Model of my Dreams: Adeptus Titanticus/Epic. That one will sink me no end. Plus the odd Death Korps of Krieg purchase.

---

Now for a suggestion - what about tying this into a Painting and Modelling blog that people can contribute to over the year?

Work has begun on my primary UFO.

Another Kingdom Death model has succumbed to being fully painted as well while I continue mulling over what to do with armor kit bits.

Got a few historical kits out the door this past week as well, and have consolidated my primary sale targets to a single box.

Started packing up a box of unfinished minis to drop off at the LGS' consignment case for this weekend too.

PROGRESS!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

God job lads, I like the idea of turning this into a communal project progress thread so that we can inspire each other.

I bought a citadel drill at the weekend and so have been drilling out the barrels of all my models the past couple days.

In addition, I've had a savage Ork chest and a normal Ork legs on my desk for ages so I pinned them together and attempted to sculpt them together using milliput.
I'm pretty pleased with the result so far but we shall see how it looks when I have painted it up.

So far in 2018, I've finally painted those ten early 2000s Imperial Guard Stormtroopers I've had lying around for a while.

The painted model count has dropped significantly as I stripped the paint (two or three paint jobs, in some cases!) off 64 stands of Epic Space marines, 32 Rhinos and 16 Land Raiders. Soon, they'll be repainted as Emperor's Children and ... a Loyalist legion to be determined.

So far so good, I have only bought four things this year, and painted quite a bit (I did a Word Bearers veteran tac squad this weekend to be able to play Betrayal at Calth...), and I've set aside a bunch of Chaos Space Marines that I want to sell.

I still have a lot of miniatures to paint to finish my first project of the year, my Alpha Legion, but things are moving forward, and with a couple of squads ready, I can start playing with this army in small games and slowly escalate as I go through the painting...

Well my Imperial Knight is DONE and waiting to get matted down tomorrow since I don't have to go to work.

Not sure if I should matte and then put decals, or do it the opposite.

I would think decals first, this way the matte seals them in, no?
I've recently started using microsol/set for decals and that stuff is magic!

Gloss varnish onto the area the decal is going, then gloss over the decal, then matte.

Gloss varnish/Klear floor polish surface, MicroSol and MicroSet to place the decal, finish off with final seal. That's what I tend to do.

Sounds like I'm getting a bottle of brush on gloss then this weekend. Thanks!

I'm off to a good start, not bought anything and if I do it's going to be a very small range of things I can buy (namely leman Russ tanks and Dropfleet PHR ships, nothing else I play needs more models) I will be fine as long as Sisters don't get a new codex, that is the only army that can break my resolve.

Paint to purchase will be larger than 10:1. I've got so many guardsmen to paint that to set it any lower would be inviting disaster.

My UFO is essentially my entire collection, I don't have a single finished army and have maybe 50 of my 200 guardsmen I'm happy with. The goal is to get the guard done first. If I can knock them out, they're bigger than any two other projects combined and were my first army, so it will be a huge morale booster. I have been block painting in batches of 20-40 guys at a time. I just drink and do a color or two every knight as I watch TV or listen to music. Absolutely soul crushing for the first few colors but gets massively easier toward the end, I just don't know any other way to knock out so many infantry. I am however jumping back to other projects occasionally to prevent burnout, usually small stuff like my Dropfleet PHR. The rule is these things are a reward. Knock out a chunk of IG, paint something else for a few days, and repeat.

The selling pile is gradually shrinking. I got rid of two of my three FOW armies, sold off my Black Templar and WIP Alpha Legion, and am working on selling off a bunch of random nids I picked up in a trade as well as a random box of grey knights. I probably should get rid of more but that was a fair bit of work already.

As for something that's a dream model, basically the older style leman Russ kits new on sprue, anything FW IG related, one of the very few commissar models that I do not own yet, or maybe a baneblade. Whatever it is, it would need to be at a good price to get me to buy it right now, I just have no desire to buy anything else at normal cost.

Second update... 10 finished, 17 acquired so far this year. Sounds impossible, but I've even managed to offload 7 other miniatures from the dusty pile. Hope new owners will enjoy them more!

First update, knocked out a good platoons worth of infantry, based all 250 infantry, nicknamed my entire catachan platoon, and painted a tank.

Almost everything else is at least 3 color minimum, and then I'm going back and finishing things a unit or two at a time.

I admit I've been a lot better about this than most people, just because I finally got fed up with having so much unfinished stuff. I now am pretty good about buying what I'm going to build/paint and then finishing it. Some exceptions exist unfortunately (the occasional blister or Reaper miniature sitting around).

I do have a very small UFO queue which is being addressed at the moment.

These dwarf gunners were sitting assembled, based and primed for maybe a year. I was going to do a Mordheim warband with them, but then realized Dwarfs are terrible in that game. Now they will serve generic dungeon duty.

Paint to purchase ratio.
I paint in bursts of activity, so my paint to purchase
ratio is buy whatever I want whenever I want. Once I can
get a goodly size of models that need x color, I batch em
up and put em out.

Area 51 policy
Same as above. If I can find other models with similar colors,
I just paint them up along with the old stuff.

Selling stuff
Selling stuff is a hassle.

The Kickstarter Menace
I've supported two kickstarters ever. I do not like the production
model and will wait for things to come out as retail models.

But this is the model of my dreams!
I buy what I want.

I stalled a little last year in my painting, but that was more real life stuff than
anything else. I've got a groove again and won't let myself stop getting
new stuff.

My main problem, honestly, is that I enjoy painting, but I hate selling or doing
commission work and I haven't figured out how the feth I'm going to store all
this crap forever.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Currently I'm working through some Menoth stuff (6 models)
and 10 models from my 1 and only miniatures based kickstarter (Widowers Wood)

So, it's been a while since I posted. A 2018 Q1 status report:

Bought this year so far
3 Lead Epic MkII Predators
1 FW Resin Ruined Building
1 FW Thunderbolt Pilot

Painted so far
2 Epic Rhinos
6 Epic Razorbacks
4 Epic Land Raiders
10 Escher Gangers
3 Sons of Medusa Rhinos (Still need weathering powder to be applied)
1 White Scars Deimos Rhino (Still need weathering powder to be applied)
1 Prætor Tribune (Needs basing)
10 Elysian Drop Troops Veterans (needs basing)

Not bad going for me. Though with the Van Saars imminent as well as Warhammer Fest and Adeptus Titanicus looming on the horizon, I expect my purchase list to climb. But I'm painting vastly more than I am buying so far.

Well, I have made amazing inroads, or at least I had.... And then I stumbled across a load of Robogear mechs going for virtually nothing....
On a side note my Infinity miniatures are all painted, barring two which have yet to be assembled, and the Morlock.
