It does highlight a point against the War Store, though. When a shipment gets lost, it might not be the store's fault, but what the customer learns is "don't buy from them again." Unless, of course, the store "makes it right".
I have generally had better luck with UPS than USPS. (The folks at the local UPS are nice people.)

In the case of the Reaper packages, I go to the extra trouble to pick them up at UPS, rather than getting it delivered to my home. (I am literally paying for extra inconvenience... but given the choice between inconvenience and not getting our packages....)

In part because the most recent USPS claim was that they had 'left the package on the porch' - we didn't have a porch!

People honestly just need to pay attention to the various delivery services and how well they function as often times issues are more local, rather than an issue at a higher level. FedEx, DHL, UPS, and USPS at a high level all function well, they wouldn't be in business/still exist if they didn't but it's those last couple of miles that are the big question. At my old house FedEx was a disaster, most of the time it looked like the guy threw the package from the street to my door step and while UPS got the package delivered it often would be marked as delivered by 7:00PM (when all of their packages are supposed to be delivered by) but not actually show up at my door until 8 or 9pm. At my current house though they're both fine, no problems.

Unfortunately, when a package carrier loses your package, both you and your retailer are a bit stuck. Until the carrier decides the package is lost and unrecoverable, not just delayed, there is no way for the retailer to collect on the shipping insurance. That means sending you out another shipment risk him losing all the cost, profit and shipping on your order. Not to mention you need to have the product available to ship again in the first place.

If your Amazon.COM, you toss the loss in your customer service cost and move on. If your a small business, you want to avoid taking the hit to the pocketbook. That means lobbying for extra patience from your customers.

I write shipping software, among other things, for high volume shipping. The actual numbers of truly "lost" packages are not 1%, not 0.1%, not 0.01% - it's less than one in ten thousand packages across USPS/UPS/FedEx that are truly lost (slightly higher for ground, less for air), and close to 99% are delivered on time (up from low to mid 90's from about a decade ago, thanks to huge investments in infrastructure and licensing - USPS leases FedEx planes, for example)

Pretty much every carrier has refundable guarantees, as well. If I ship something 3 Day Select via UPS (it's air), if it doesn't make it, UPS is liable. And UPS, FedEx, and USPS are at each other's throats for business right now.

It is such a crutch that whenever I hear someone or some business say that a package was "lost" in the mail, I absolutely believe they are lying first.

Don't forget, you can generate tracking information for UPS and FedEx for a shipment of 1 to many packages each with described sizes and weights, complete with a ship to address, and actually ship it - such as by hiding it on your End of Day report that UPS uses when it does a pick up - and it will have tracking information that shows the shipment was created, and often even picked up - and will take weeks to leave the system once it doesn't travel through a hub (which is where packages are scanned by lasers and weighed to determine billable dimensions and dimensional weights).

It's fun!

Indeed- I've had packages for other people lobbed onto my back porch.

The worst i've ever had with the postal service is they mark it as delivered, then take a couple hours to come back and actually deliver it. And the gnawing uncertainty caused by their tracking system being days behind the package...

The most frustrating evolution, which I've seen a fair amount lately, is UPS delivering the package to USPS and having them deliver it locally. These inevitably end up being delivered a couple days after the scheduled date, and the tracking takes it to the local post office, then leave town for the USPS distribution center, come back to local post office, and then actually get delivered. What is this, I don't even...

Almost had a package lost here a month ago. USPS delivered it to the wrong house by accident AND didn’t scan it as delivered when they did, so couldn’t tell Where it had been delivered. Ended up getting it about two weeks later while I had been in the middle of reporting it lost with the company I’d ordered from because the person who received it did eventually return it to the post office so they were able to get it to me.

And all the software in the world can't fix stupid. Had my reaper order say it was delivered, USPS insists that it was dropped off with X meters of my location and as such must have been delivered to the right location. Let me just say, when there are four apartment buildings in that radius please just be willing to tell the dude the package may have been misplaced and should be re-delivered if found. They weren't wrong that it was in that radius, but it still took me two days to get the hell in and I only managed it because on of the girls in the office lived in that building and had seen my name on the package.
