I myself have not bought a single book for anything in 8th. I have entirely used pictures found online, battlescribe and 1d4chan for cross checking. Up until the point in 8th I have not been wrong a single time on any rules involving codex or index rules. I have a standing offer with everyone I play games with that if I am ever proven wrong about any rules from a codex or index I will give them $20. I think that if you actually put the effort in you can easily avoid buying the books. However I 100% believe if you are playing in a tournament or league you should be required to have a book or official PDF as thats just good form. CA I would personally let slide because I feel the point change updates should have been free, but I would see no problem with a tournament requiring CA in addition to the codex/index. I have yet to have anyone refuse a game with me because of my lack of official rule sources, but this is probably because of my reputation and the fact that I offer $20 if I am ever wrong.

Just to inject a point. The Battlescribe files are made under the assumption that you own the rules in use from an official source, and make no claim to be a substitute, just a tool of convenience.
There are always imperfections, either because we missed something, or the way the program is laid out doesn't allow us a clean implementation, but always check your lists by hand for major events!

There is also the fact that, like any open source project, the contributors are insular, feedback-phobic and hate new people/suggestions with a passion that rivals that of the Sisters of Battle.
This means if a contributor has a pet project, good luck ever trying to get it fixed.

from what I have seen CA is there. as for owning a codex vs battlescribe I don't really have any interest in codexes I own several armies and keeping up with the latest codexes would involve less money to spend on models. I usually pick n army for competitive games if I want and will buy that codex that edition, I started this edition with orks in mind and got Index 2 and was very disappointed with the decision. so I know if the green skins will not be shafted for another edition everything will be battlescribe or net sources only. GW still gets my money, I still buy at least 1 kit a month and help others build and paint armies so I am pretty sure I am a net positive for them.. I just think they should release their rules free and market the models more. I know kids who want armies at my FLGS who when their parents find out they need a rule book and a codex to use the pricey models steer their kids to other hobbies or miniature games.

This probably isn't the right place to post this question but I'm playing a casual power level game 100 game and I'm teaming up with a DG player and im "converting" my AM HWS mortar teams to Heretic HWS mortar teams but battlescribe is telling me that they are 6PL each as opposed to 3PL for AM. They have worse BS and cant take orders and that's fine there has to be some trade off for being able to roll off damage on a 6+ but it seems like the PL should be similar.

Every single bug rep or comment you have ever made there has been unnecessarily combative, correct or otherwise, which results in people not wanting to have any sort of discourse with you.
There are ways to say "hey, I don't think the interpretation you're using is right" and providing support for that without personally attacking the volunteer author of a particular catalog.

In the latest version of the R&H catalogue (v16), Renegade HWS are 3PL for three weapons, same as AM. They only go up to 6PL if you put more weapons in the squad (which you can't do with AM HWS).
If you still think there's a problem, raise an issue here https://github.com/BSData/wh40k and I'll take a look at it.

Ok so, I have some difficulties again. Using battlescribe for mobiles, I can't buy a vanquisher cannon for my tank commander (astra militarum).'
Do you have the same bug ? Or am I unaware of something ?

The cannon isn't a wargear option, you have to click on the Leman Russ and then change it to a Leman Russ Vanquisher
