On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Wow some great stuff, I hadn't seen that Star Trek cover before!

My first issue was 127, the 'Eldar issue'.

Pretty sure my first mini was this guy in amongst a couple of others (including a dead marine) in a blister pack. He was painted using sharpened matchsticks and Humbrol enamel paints

If we're playing that game, I'm pretty sure this was my first issue of WD...I was approaching my 10th birthday...

"Bloody typical, they've gone back to metric without telling us."

"As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh haven't you?"

"We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"

"Mind the oranges Marlon!"

I began with White Dwarf 130 (October 1990); the background for Confrontation, some stuff for Orks in 1st edition 40k, new rules for the Capitol Imperialis and Hellbore in Epic (looking back now, the third time they'd done rules for the Capitol Imperialis in 1st edition Epic alone!) and some stuff for WFRP 1st edition (IIRC, another of the Marienburg articles and expanded rules for going mad).

This issue is as old as my marriage...

Right bang in the middle of GW's "red period". I had nothing to do with GW between 1989 and 2002. Looking at the pictures in this edition, I totally remember why! I appreciate many folks loved that time, but to me, it was truly the decade that good taste forgot! I only started looking at GW again when their more realistic and less garish aesthetic came back into favour with LotR in the early noughties.

While I'm on the nostalgia wagon, here's a picture of my earliest miniature. I have no recollection of painting him, but the scribble underneath his base says I did so in 1985. The fact that he is based on a 1/2p piece bears this out as they went out of circulation in 1984.

I’veonly ever bought one issue of WD actually. I *think* its 150 - it had a card reference for 5E (I think) 40K - the reason I bought it. It also has the “Movie Marines” article in it and an article on the White Dwarf himself. Grimboral is his name, if I reacall correctly. Also had thumbnails of all the cover issues from 1-150.

The magazine I collected was Dragon (& Dungeon). I remember the days when Dragon used to review GW’s games even, and gave them pretty good marks to boot.

Oh Blarg ... it wasn't 150 I bought, it was 300! (And the dwarf's name is Grombrindal). December, 2004 - about 17 years into playing.

It's impossible for me to have any 40k miniatures older than me, although the first Rogue Trader guys are about the same age as me, and I passed on a chance to buy a few of those recently (decided to save my money for something I'd actually use!). I'm about the same age as Warhammer 40k, probably a few months older.

As for my oldest minis, I just bought an old metal Bjorn the Fell-handed model that has copyright 1994 on the box. So I was 7 when that model was made (or at least when that box art was made), and I had no idea at that time that 40k was even a thing.

I love collecting old metal GW models. I just love the feel of them and how much character the sculpts had back then. Don't get me wrong, I love the modern stuff too, but the metal ones were really special.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

I liked that issue. The fact that some of my models were used in the LotR batrep had nothing to do with it of course...

On the bright side, at least the Dreadnought and Chimera chassis still looks alright.

Could get the Taurox treatment and have everyone complain for two years.

Is there a permanent stickied thread for Chaos players to complain every time someone/anyone gets models or rules besides them? If not, there should be.

So long as we're doing it, this issue of WD is now old enough to go to the corner shop and buy my a beer in India.

Provided we're not in a dry state which there is a growing number of.

It may be the first one I bought, if not certainly one of the first.

And this issue can get me a beer in Japan.

IIRC it's the one with all the cool IG armies from an era when GW didn't show too many conversions.

That Orc fantasy army book was my first GW purchase for fantasy. The art work in that book is incredible.
