I've no objection to apps, but not having an appropriate device this one's a pass

I've seen the X-Com one and that works really well, but I've also often seen the temptation for at least one player to snag the phone/tablet and generally fiddle with it happen a fair bit too so they are certainly double edged swords

Something to remember is that you don't have to make your game all things for all people; if you have a phone app that makes the game run quickly for the sorts of things enough people want out of the game, then it's a good thing.

I'm excited to follow this!

You probably should try to maximize your audience though, maybe.

Though, like you say, if App Integration is your #1 thing, or really important, then yes, do forward with that and make it the best thing you can...

Cheers for moving the thread Alphy

I think it's fair to make the following comments, and come to the game developer's defence somewhat over the use of an app:
- there are enough smart devices about (phones, tablets, laptop) that they have reached a saturation of homes in the developed world. I would say the possibility of someone in a gaming group not having a device between the 3-4 players is extremely, extremely slim. It's not like this has been released on only the Wonderswan.
- I defy anyone to play XCOM, and then come back and say that the use of the app detracted from the experience. Like XCOM, it could well be that the app is a defining feature of how the game plays (certainly, the fact that it won't be playable without it makes it sound like this is so).
If there is even a 20% chance that this game can bring the atmosphere and events of something like Das Boot to the boardgame, through the use of an app (or it could have been legacy format, or whatever), then I think it is a chance worth taking. It's moving the playing experience forward through technology,

Or it might be that the app is a pile of rubbish, and the whole game unplayable. In which case, fair enough !

Sounds reasonable. Most alpha gamers buy a game, play it a few times, then never play the game again. Myself, I admit to doing so -- except my first play is typically several years after buying the game.

I think there are at least two other real-time submarine-themed games, and other real-time games that don't depend on an app (eg. Space Alert). I think FFG's shown that there's enough of a market for boardgames that depend on an app, but FFG will be around longer than most other game companies, I'd say.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Latest update, several stretch goals have now been reached

Good to see the '88 deck gun element has been included, as that was a pretty major component of U-Boat activities during the war.

Hello Everyone,
It fills us with great pride and joy that after just 24 hours into the campaign, UBOOT has not only been successfully funded, but also raised more than half a million dollars, thus allowing us to dramatically improve game quality through its further development process.

So far, we have managed to unlock several key features that were meant to be in the game since the very first days of its conception. Things like day and night, weather effects, the tutorial scenario, the 88mm deck gun, and more. All of these constitute an absolutely essential part of the game, and we are very glad that we will be able to work on them to make UBOOT a complete submarine experience. And for that, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without your openness, enthusiasm, and generosity.

The campaign, however, is far from over and when you think of the stretch goals and add-ons ahead, please know this: we have not come even close to revealing our best ideas.

We are confident that you have noticed by now that most of our game upgrades are not just meant to make it look better, but, first and foremost, to play better. There will be certain game elements that will probably impress you with their looks, but that is not even remotely the reason why we decided to launch this campaign. The intention behind it was to introduce even more innovative solutions and game mechanics to the experience, and we trust that at least some of these will really stir your minds and get you even more excited about playing UBOOT. This is not to say that there won’t be some truly spectacular plastic (and resin) pieces, but I am not going to spoil it, as I am sure you will have much more fun discovering everything by yourselves.

With that in mind, we would like to thank you all very much on behalf of the whole UBOOT team, both at Phalanx and at Iron Wolf Studio. It has been an amazing campaign so far, and we will be giving it our all to meet your expectations by delivering the best submarine board game ever created.

Happy gaming!

Latest stretch goals & updates as it's now passed £425k, even though no-one has posted in the thread can see plenty are viewing so will keep copying them here!

Nice one for me here is the '88, but also the higher quality playing pieces are a good idea.

And brilliant to see that swordfish mark

ALAAARM! 3D objects spotted on the horizon!

Hello Everyone,
At last, the happy time is coming! We are proud to introduce the first wave of 3D goodies to enhance the look of the game, and we will keep adding many further pieces in our future updates. Some of them will be functional pieces for the game, and some will serve a purely aesthetic function, allowing you to customize your U-boat to give it even more character.

The first add-on upgrade pack that we are offering is a set of 15 Environmental Condition 3D tokens (base width 20mm). These hazardous conditions will pose different threat levels to the crew and to the U-boat itself. Matching the mood of their surroundings, these prominent pieces will also help the players’ situational awareness. Cast in vibrantly colored resin, they will stand out and offer an even better view of the situation than their cardboard equivalents included in the core game box. If painted, they will make a truly spectacular addition to an already great-looking game!

To include this add-on in your pledge, please click on the Manage your pledge button and increase your total pledged amount by 12 GBP. You will be able to let us know in the Pledge Manager which items you have added to your order. This add-on will not increase your shipping costs. You need to purchase at least one copy of UBOOT The Board Game to be able to include any add-ons in your pledge.

However, the undisputable highlight of this update is the iconic SK C/35 88mm deck gun. We have just revealed it as the 500,000 GBP stretch goal and it will make its way into every copy of the game as long as this goal is reached! Complete with all its distinctive features, this unmistakable* artillery piece is the first object to make a spectacular addition to your 3D U-boat arsenal.

We hope you are excited about these additions to the game! We will be revealing more of them as time passes, allowing you to turn your U-boat into a lean, mean fighting machine If you have any doubts, then just think of the moment when you set it all up on your table… Because when we think of it, it makes as feel like:

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey folks - apologies, was a new update over the weekend, but haven't had the chance to update.
Good to see some more plastic components as options as well as play counters, I think it'll be possible to have a really highly produced version of the game (although will bump up the price a bit).

More content for morale as well which will play a big impact in the game, it does seem every effort possible is being made to make the game a simulation of submarine warfare.

Hello Everybody,

You wanted us to start showing some more serious stuff, so here comes our biggest update yet. Actually, we’ve got so many interesting things to show you that I will try keeping it brief (which I usually find rather difficult, so consider yourselves warned).

First off all, we would like to present our stunning upgrade for the conning tower. It features all the equipment that you would see on an early-war VIIC, complete with two periscopes, the direction finder antenna, the main hatch, and the UZO*. Just picture both deck guns and this beauty on top of your model! Now we’re talking, right?

But the fun doesn’t end here...

Next, due to popular demand, we are introducing the 20mm Flak gun to complement the 88mm. As some of you have mentioned, getting one without the other would drive you mad! As we cannot allow that to happen, we are revealing the 20mm right now, so you can heave a sigh of relief.

Hopefully, the Flak will soon be making its way into your game box, although that clearly depends on how fast you unlock the stretch goals before it

And, since we are discussing these, let’s not forget that we are nearing the new morale cards stretch goal. Once funded, they will make for some really harrowing situations! Will the captain go as far as to reach for his gun? Will the crew manage to get the situation under control? You all remember what happened to Johann, right? So now you’d better avoid the red part of the morale track at all cost, because the captain could eventually lose his temper!

Next up, we have the second instalment in the 3D token series. As environmental hazards spread, there must also be effective countermeasures. This set includes a fire extinguisher, spare light bulbs, wiring, water pump, a Tauchretter** (rebreather), as well as two toolboxes used to mark where the supplies are located. However, If you think that it is the Chief Engineer who always gets the best toys, then don’t worry: you will probably change your mind soon

Lastly, a lot of you have been asking about the rulebook. Let us assure you that the rules for the current version of the game are ready, we just need to upgrade them visually from plain text to something more palatable We are planning to release them next week, so you will have plenty of reading for the cold, winter evenings.

Ok, folks, that’s everything we’ve got for you today. Please remember to share our content on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, so that more and more people get to know about UBOOT! If you want to make the game better for everybody (including yourself!) then you certainly got what it takes to do it!

Oh, and you’ll be getting emblem stickers too! The first one is ready, but for now… It’s a secret.

Happy gaming!

Iron Wolf Studio and PHALANX

*UZO is an abbreviation of ‘Unterwasserzieloptik’. It was a specialized binocular set mounted on a column that was connected straight to the U-boat’s torpedo data computer (the TDC, aka the Torpedovorhaltrechtner). Targeting data would then be transmitted to the TDC from the UZO, thus making a complete targeting system for surface torpedo attacks.

**The Tauchretter was a breathing apparatus that was meant to allow for escaping from a sinking U-boat.However, it actually saw more use for air purification purposes, e.g. whenever the air inside became too toxic or low on oxygen).

More resin components in the latest update - this is turning into quite a nice modelling project, if you want to do something other than just play the boardgame.

Feature on the difference between the mats as well, which will prompt me to upgrade!

Hello everybody,

As we are diving deeper and deeper into the campaign, it is finally the time to reveal our 3D interior set. Sculpted with painstaking attention to detail and intended for resin casting, this amazing set includes most of the distinctive elements that you would expect to find inside a type VIIC U-boat:

The periscope column, the diesel engine, the electric motor, radio and hydrophone stations, as well as the galley: all of these have been modeled with amazing attention to detail by our expert 3D artist. Designed to enhance the visual appeal of the game without hindering gameplay, this reasonably-priced set will turn your already spectacular U-boat model into a mind-blowing, richly decorated 3D terrain piece.

Furthermore, we’ve got some more details from our playmat manufacturer, together with the long-awaited comparison between the two mat versions to give you a better sense of the difference between the two:

Please note, that everyone who pledges a full UBOOT Pledge during this campaign will get the Latex playmat for free! If you want, you may upgrade it to Eco leather mat for £12.

To include add-ons in your pledge, please click on the Manage your pledge button. Increase your total pledged amount of the add-on values, to include any items you would like to receive. You will be able to let us know in the Pledge Manager (after the campaign ends) which items you have added to your order.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Latest Update as the campaign has now passed the half-mil mark.

Unfotunately I can't link pictures on my device but they can be seen here, think one of the best additions so far if it makes it!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/phalanxgames/uboot-the-board-game/posts/2103605

I like the idea of the wolf pack introduced as well, hopefully the campaign will reach that total.

Hello everybody,

Our today’s update opens with the widely anticipated U-boat emblem stickers. We are happy to announce that they will be going into every Kickstarter copy of the game, provided that we reach the following social media goal:

A total of 500 Facebook shares, Twitter retweets and Instagram likes of the following posts:

Facebook post is here: https://goo.gl/8yCAFJ

Twitter post is here: https://goo.gl/xSBRic

Instagram post is here: https://goo.gl/FUe4KC

For Facebook, it is the sticky post at the top of the linked page.

That’s right, this should be easy-peasy, as long as we can count on a little help from your side. Let’s see how badly you want them!

The final contents of the sticker sheet are pending, and we would like to organize a poll so that you can tell us which ones you would like to have most. Please note that the stickers will be available at the PHALANX booth at conventions, through competitions, prize giveaways, etc., but not through retail distribution.

Alright, so you think you can help us gather some more interest in the game? If you wish, you can think of it as a side mission that, upon completion, will give more character to your model and more stretch goals unlocked for your game And, speaking of the latter, we’ve got some juicy morsels for you...

What lies ahead
As we are slowly approaching the 500k goal, it is time to reflect upon past achievements and evaluate new opportunities on the road before us.

The heart of the game, our companion app, is already shaping up to be a very solid component with a wide range of gameplay functionalities. Our U-boat has the potential to amaze submarine afficionados with its life-like appearance, and they now have the ability to make it even more amazing with the addition of technically accurate interior pieces. Soon, the most characteristic elements of its silhouette, i.e. the deck guns and periscopes, will have been unlocked for all fans of historical fidelity to enjoy (including my humble self).

However, balance must be maintained. As we have recently focused on the aesthetic side of the game (due to popular demand, let’s not forget about it), we now feel that everybody is satisfied with how gorgeous the game could potentially look, but also curious about further improvements to its gameplay as such. We have come a full circle, and, we are now ready to reveal more about how gameplay will be improved via our two new stretch goals:

The weapons of war
The 545k stretch goal will introduce the difference between the G7a and the G7e torpedoes, the two most important weapons of the U-Bootwaffe. Which one will you choose? The fast, reliable, but more easily detectable G7a, or the stealthier, slower, yet far less dependable G7e?

Should we wait for nightfall before we launch our hubbly-bubblies? Which ones do we fire given the current distance? And just how many do we launch considering possible duds? All these questions and more will be going through the crew’s heads in anticipation of a torpedo attack.

The wolfpacks
So far, our U-boat has been a lone hunter. However, this may and will change if we unlock the 560k stretch goal. It will introduce AI U-boats to hunt together with, using authentic ‘reporting line’ patrol procedures, where a thinly stretched line of U-boats would comb the vast expanses of the Atlantic, making synchronous zigzags in order to maximize their search potential.

But that’s not all, as lone AI U-boats will be roaming the seas as well, allowing you to interact with them in a variety of ways. Sometimes the HQ will let you know that a new convoy has been spotted and another U-boat is preparing for attack. Will you join it and help obliterate the target, or will you both be chased away and pummelled by escorts, each crew hoping for the other to divert enemy attention?

You will also be tasked with search and rescue operations, and sometimes you might need help, refueling, or resupply yourself. With this stretch goal, we are making yet another step towards realizing a truly open-world, ‘sandbox’ formula that this game was intended to have from the very start.

So, what are you waiting for? Think about which emblem you would like to slap on your conning tower, and don’t forget to share our posts through social media! Remember that more interest in UBOOT will ultimately make the game better for everybody

All best and happy gaming!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

There have been a handful of preview/reviews on prototype versions of the game - from looking around on BGG most of them seem to be enthusiastic and positive about the game.
This is probably one of the most comprehensive reviews, I've copied the text from a few areas
http://www.awargamersneedfulthings.co.uk/2018/01/uboottbg-kickstarter-preview.html

It's worth noting I think that this is still a project in development. Various elements such as elements of the app, a puzzle that you need to complete when conducting repairs, and parts of the game are still work in progress. For example, the BoW gameplay video was only about a week old, and was missing some day/night mechanics and 'side mission' orders that are hopefully going to be incuded in the finished game.

In some ways this makes it have a proper KS feel - the developers have got a great idea for the game, and they are passionate about this period of history and submarine warfare. But, they need the funds to help make it as good as possible.

This take on submarine warfare is more immersive than any computer sub-sim I’ve played (see above pic) albeit it’s not as complex. However, through playing the Silent Hunters and Dangerous Waters of this world, I think they are missing a crucial element; when I play them I don’t feel like I’m working together with a crew. From my military experience, the crew or the people you have around you are what makes or breaks your mission. In U-Boot: TBG, because there are four of you working together; it really feels like (as far as a game is able – let’s get serious!) you’re a crew on board a military submarine.

In most areas, the designers have got just the right amount of complexity to keep the game enjoyable and realistic at the same time. I would struggle to describe it as a simulation, in my head, they are not fun and usually end with your instructor giving you a less-than-pleasant debrief. However, I think the designers want to implement different levels of complexity within the app that you can try for more of a challenge.

The whole article gives a pretty good idea of how the game is and it plays, I think should give a pretty good idea of whether it sounds like the kind of thing you would enjoy or not.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Latest update as the pledge total reaches £525k, now with just a week to go.

Another social media re-posting addition, with an additional Allied aircraft in the form of HMS Illustrious. Hopefully they will reach the target easily as they did the last one.

Death from above

At the beginning of the war, German U-boats were relatively safe from Allied aircraft. The radar was at an early stage of development, the planes did not often carry specialized anti-submarine armament, and the Leigh Light* was still a few years away. No depth charges or Fido torpedoes** dropping from the sky yet. No air patrols attacking out of nowhere only because the U-boat captain allowed himself to send a message to the HQ***. A substantial air gap in the middle of the Atlantic, referred to as Torpedo Junction by the Allies. It was a happy time indeed... Until it turned out it was the calm before the storm.

The above situation would be gradually and inevitably changing in favor of the Allies, up to the point where U-boats were being ruthlessly decimated by aircraft. Their only hope of survival was absolute radio silence and technological, as well as tactical adaptation to the unwelcome environment that the Atlantic had become. When the war was drawing to an end, even such seemingly basic maneuvers as leaving the base were potentially deadly, let alone the actual assignment ahead...

Fortunately for our UBOOT crews, that is not where we begin our journey. We start early in the war, with scarce and ill-equipped air patrols that you can try chasing away with your brand new 20mm Flak gun. While not the most fearsome among anti-aircraft weapons, it still has the potential to deter or eliminate incoming planes.

That being said, most submariners know it all too well that fighting aircraft on the surface is a risky feat, but there might be situations where there is no other choice. If caught off-guard when refueling or providing assistance to another U-boat, you may have no other option but to put up your dukes and make a stand. After all, each aircraft that pinpoints your position could relay it to other Allied units…

And there is already one among them that could prove to be both a juicy target, and a can of whoopass at the same time. Introducing HMS Illustrious, an armored aircraft carrier that you can unlock via our next social goal. You can think of it as the first ‘boss’ enemy in the game, as this vessel has got it all: speed, toughness, as well as offensive capabilities that will make you hide underwater in awe of the air cover it can unleash upon you. Death from above? Oh yes you betcha! But only if you manage to unlock this goal first:

*A very powerful searchlight mounted on aircraft. It was used to light up the U-boat at night for a precision strike while blinding its AA gunners at the same time.

**Acoustic torpedoes that were dropped into the water by aircraft. They would search for the U-boat’s noise signature and go for the attack upon locking on.

***That was due to the High Frequency Direction Finder, the infamous ‘huff-duff’. The Allies used it to pinpoint the locations where U-boats were sending their radio messages from.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

A couple more updates
Apologies am again posting from a device and haven't found a way to quickly post over pics, but they can be found on this URL

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/phalanxgames/uboot-the-board-game/posts/2109612

A nice new idea with having little plastic counters on the tactical map, hopefully this will reach the level of campaign.

Hello everybody,

We have a major update for you today, so I will try keeping it short, as usual

First of all, we would like to thank you for your amazing support! You have just unlocked the conning tower upgrade, the model’s jewel in the crown. Remember how far it seemed just a week ago? And now it is yours for the taking!

So, if we stay on course just a little longer, we will be making our way towards the most ground-breaking app functionalities pretty soon! Before that, however, there are still torpedoes, wolfpacks, and a few new goals waiting to be unlocked. And we would like to present two of them right now:

The tactical map brought to life
That’s right, we are deploying the first tactical map upgrade that so many of you have asked about! Instead of sad cardboard counters, it will become populated with various enemy units: merchants, escorts, and more! But that’s not all, as this upgrade will also totally remodel the game’s visual identification mechanic, as all contact information (including unit types and their GRT) will become fully integrated into the app! And, as I’m sure you remember, you have already unlocked a few different unit types, as well as the identification sheet...

And that was a part of a bigger plan from the very start. So, can you smell what der Smutje is cooking? Well, I am sure you are, as this is more than just a bunch of minis - it constitutes a part of an integrated system, bringing together our app models, their tactical map 3D representations, and the identification sheet data, all working together to bring you the most authentic enemy identification experience to date.

A new type of enemy enters the battle
Apart from merchants and escorts, there will be other new vessels to encounter, especially near the coast. Though not as potent as their sea-going brethren, they will still make your lives miserable if you give them the chance, so don’t The trawlers may be slow, but they will aptly greet you if you ever show yourself in their waters. And no, they won’t be rolling out the red carpet before you, rest assured.

Anyhow, let’s not spend too much time discussing new enemy types. I guess that you can already see that there will be plenty of them, as well as reasons to put your identification sheet to good use Right now, however, there are a couple of other important things to let you know about, and that’s what I would like to focus on before we finish.

One of the things we would like to show you is a visualization of our 3d resin tokens in action. Populating the technical view of the U-boat, they will make the affected section stand out, offering a much clearer view of hazardous sections within the U-boat. Moreover, they will vividly show the contents of each toolbox, and let’s not forget about the Captain’s brand new order tokens. These will all work together to enhance your enjoyment, but also the practical side of the game.

Next up, there are two new videos that we would like to recommend to our German-speaking audience: a preview, as well as a playthrough by Brettspielblog.net. Both of them offer a lot of details regarding gameplay and more, so we wholeheartedly recommend these if you wish to learn more about UBOOT:

Last, but not least, we would like to remind you about our latest social goal, the HMS Illustrious! We have already got 384 shares in total, so this is another goal that will soon be yours!

Apart from sharing, you can always spread the word about UBOOT, or help the project in some other way if you wish. For example, one thing you could do is click on this Kicktraq link: http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/phalanxgames/uboot-the-board-game/#chart-daily And then click the ‘VISIT PROJECT’ button. Kicktraq is a very important site for all Kickstarter projects, and Each time you click on the link, it helps UBOOT stay on Kicktraq’s main page, which obviously results in A LOT of traffic (clicking actually works once in the evening and once in the morning, unless you use different IPs.).

Alright, so now you know what you can to do to help our cause. If you have any comments, remarks, or just anything you would like to share with us, then please post in the comments section. We value your feedback, we are doing this game for you, and we will continue to do so for as long as you motivate us to make it the best submarine board game ever created. And so far you are doing an incredible job.

All best and happy gaming!

And the latest update - new 2 player demo of the game (will be interesting to see how this plays - especially due to length of campaigns and getting people together to do a 4 player each time, this might be a good option)
[url]

Hello everybody,

Today we’ve got a new batch of material for you to watch and read. Two new UBOOT previews, as well as our long-awaited two-player playthrough! Yes, we’ve finally managed to get it done, and we did learn the hard way that recording a decent material is no plain sailing Getting all the cameras and the sound gear right (which gave us the most headache), but also speaking intelligibly (instead of just mumbling to oneself, as I often do) was not so trouble-free after all

Anyhow, it’s not for us to decide how good (or bad) it is, so we are eagerly awaiting your feedback! Hopefully, you will see that playing with two roles per player is actually no biggie, especially once you get the chance to play a few times. Oh, and we have also recorded a solo playthrough - it is currently undergoing post-production and it will be going online very soon

Right, with that out of the way, we still have the previews, as well as one small thing that we would like to show you. But let’s focus on the previews for now. The first one is intended for English speakers and has just appeared on Everything Board Games:

Everything Board Games review link.
Everything Board Games review link.

The author offers an in-depth perspective on setup and rules, his thoughts on the 3D model, as well as a good overview of gameplay experience for each of the roles. He also shares his perspective on the learning curve and the balancing of the roles, making for an informative and well-structured analysis overall.

The second of the two is meant for the Polish-speaking detachment among our backers, and it has just appeared on Games Fanatic, one of the most important Polish boardgaming sites:

Games Fanatic review link.
Games Fanatic review link.

This preview is much more emotional, as the author goes to great lengths to convey the feel and the atmosphere permeating the players’ experience. Those are very important aspects of UBOOT indeed, and the author has done an outstanding job of capturing the game’s essence. Actually, it is a moment of great joy for a game designer to see that all the hard work actually produced the intended result... Absolutely priceless! All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend this review to our Polish-speaking audience - it conveys the feel of the game perfectly.

Last, but not least, we’d like to give you a yet another perspective of your gorgeous 3D model! Bringing its silhouette in focus this time around, this picture should give you a better understanding of component proportions, as well as the total height of the periscopes:

Oh my, doesn’t it look like the real thing? I simply cannot wait to see what some of the more creative bunch do with it once they get it in their hands I am already thinking of attaching a string to the bow, tying it around the conning tower equipment, and then leading it all the way to the stern After all, we need a place to hang the victory pennants on the way back home, don’t we?

All best and happy gaming!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Moving into the last 48 hours of the campaign now. Have achieved the plastic U-boat tactical marker and now moving towards the next app upgrade at £590k

Big one for me as well is that the Wolfpacks stretch-goal has now been reached. This was always one of the big things missing from Silent Hunter 3 and its expansions - the ability to co-ordinate attacks with other u-boats. Will be interesting to see how they implement this in the game, am looking forward to more demoes!

The next update has one of the coolest ideas with a noise meter(!) don't make too much noise when the uboat is passing overhead and looking for you!
I have some friends who will struggle with this one, but what an awesome idea.

Torpedo... LOS!

When on patrol, choosing the right tool for the job is a matter of utmost importance. All the preparations, the approach, and the result of the attack itself will hinge on the crew’s ability to evaluate the chances of hitting the target. And, just as the captain makes the decision which torpedo type to load and fire, that very same question is now before us: with just three more days to go, we are now loading our tubes with the most deadly and exciting stretch goals we have ever designed

And you won’t be waiting for those for too long, as you have blitzed through the torpedoes and you are now closing the distance to one of the most coveted SGs yet: the wolfpacks! Right after that we start upgrading the tactical map, then there’s the trawler, and then… Even the most seasoned captains would not be able to tell, but you’d better be prepared for something BIG

Before we reveal this next big thing, however, there are two important announcements:

Firstly, we must commend your fortitude in the face of the enemy. You have swiftly unlocked the HMS Illustrious, unheeding of the fury that she could unleash upon us all This will be a tough opponent to beat, but experienced crews will undoubtedly be tempted by the fame and glory that would become their fate if they managed to sink it.

Secondly, we are preparing to introduce the all-in pledge, just as you requested. Its final details have almost been worked out, and we will be revealing them all tomorrow. We hope that the offer we have prepared will be to your satisfaction.

With just three days to go, the campaign is drawing to a close, and the Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. As we have given our project a lot of love and attention, we are hopeful that this feeling will grow even stronger and evolve into a long-lasting relationship

‘...And they published wargames happily everafter’

Wouldn’t that make a nice happy ending?

All best and happy gaming!

And update #17 from yesterday

Hello everybody,

We are back with another major update, but I’m sure that at this point you would expect nothing less So, without further ado, let’s get started, because there is a lot to cover.

The howls in the distance are becoming more and more sinister... Yes, our wolves have already assembled, and they are lying in wait under the cover of darkness. Soon, they will unleash their fury upon all those who dare trespass onto their hunting grounds. There will be no mercy, only waves upon waves of attacks while the pack nibbles at a convoy, slowly but surely wearing it down and depriving it of its precious cargo.

However, before the wolves have had the chance to sink their teeth into the flesh of their victims, there is still some lone hunting to do. And that’s actually something that I have taken to the very limit: taking the role of a lone wolf and hunting all by myself. So, if you think that I am referring to our solo playthrough, then you are perfectly right!

And there you have it! If you wanted to see a proof of whether the game is solo-able, then look no further: you can now plainly see whether it is something that would be of interest to you. We hope you like it, even though none of the actual solo mode features have been implemented yet In the final game, however, everything will be much more polished regarding this game mode, and we are really looking forward to spending a lot more time working both on solo, and on the varied difficulty levels (which we barely had the chance to work on before the campaign). All in all, I hope this video will allow solo gamers to make a more conscious decision regarding whether they want to get the game or not.

Another item on the agenda is the third and final social goal, and that is no other than the app functionality that many of you asked about: the noise meter! This function will determine the noise level of the submarine’s e-motors, combining it with your device’s microphone to determine the total noise level of the submarine! Whisper orders to avoid detection, turn down the e-motors, and DO NOT MAKE A SOUND when the destroyer is passing above you! The noise of the engines, together with one of your fellow players’ unfortunate sneeze may as well draw the adversary right on top of you, and they always come with a nasty surprise... This function will, of course, be fully adjustable, allowing you to turn it off completely if you happen to live together with kids, pets, farm animals, or other gremlins that you have not fed to the crew yet

And, if you thought that was everything, then think again! We are once again slashing prices to bring you the best deal possible (Michał, can I have my meat cleaver back?) . Anyway, this option is the best choice for anyone interested in the ultimate UBOOT experience. It includes the game, all the unlocked stretch goals, as well as all of the game’s add-ons (except Deluxe Plotting Tools, that may be added separately, as some of you already have them thanks to the Early Backer 24H bonus) with a nice additional discount of 6 GBP. This is the best value package for those gamers who want it all and are not willing to pass up on anything. Just please make sure to read the updated FAQ before you manage your pledge, and make sure NOT TO press ‘cancel pledge’, especially if you are a first 24H backer! Actually, you might not want to get your fingers anywhere near the ‘cancel pledge’ button… Michał has still got the cleaver, just saying

In order to upgrade to the 'UBOOT All-in Pledge', press the 'manage your pledge' button, next press 'change your pledge' and choose the 'UBOOT All-in Pledge'. Type in the correct pledge amount and click on the 'continue' button, and then on the 'confirm' button. It's done! If you did not make it in time for the Early Backer 24H bonus and you wish to add the Deluxe Plotting Tools to your pledge, then upon selecting the UBOOT All-in Pledge, please enter 120GBP instead of 110BGP. The delivery date of the All-in Pledge is the same as the Uboot Pledge: December 2018.

Now, with everything done, I can retract the periscope, dive deep, and rig my sub for silent running. It has been a long patrol indeed, and my crew really needs some rest. Oh, and as far as silent running goes, I have a word of advice for you: when playing UBOOT with the noise meter, make sure that all your crew switch off their mobiles...

That final stretch goal for the enigma machine is immensely cool, although it didn't quite reach that target hopefully there will be enough add-on sales to get to the £300k

A post KS update, with some info about the pledge manager and for late backers

Hello everybody,

This week we are starting to work on further game development, as well as the production and delivery schedule. We are very excited that we can finally start unleashing this game’s true potential! We are also very happy that it has come to pass and will remember who we owe it to, and that is to our incredible backers You rock!

Below you can find a few important pieces of information regarding the further course of action:

IMPORTANT: Pledge Manager details

1. We will be setting up the pledge manager as soon as possible - we will use Backerkit.com. It will allow you to:

manage your pledges (check your items, add or remove items from your pledge),
purchase extra copies of the game, add-ons etc. (also the all-in pack, as hundreds of you have emailed saying that you wish to improve your pledge to this level. This is not possible now, but you will be able to add what you wish in the pledge manager on the same terms as during the campaign),
enter your delivery addresses,
choose language editions.
Please do not send us messages containing the above information, as we will be unable to process it. These kinds of choices are made in the pledge manager ONLY.

2. People who have missed the campaign will be able to make a late pledge in the pledge manager. You won't receive the free mat, as this was a bonus for Kickstarter backers only, but you will be able to get it as an add-on. The Kickstarter version of the game is the same as pre-ordered or retail version. There are no Kickstarter exclusives here!

3. Once the pledge manager is open, you will receive an email notification. There is also going to be a separate update too. You really can’t miss it, although please check your spam email from time to time

4. The pledge manager should go live in 2 months after the campaign finished, as we need to make the final quotes for shipping based on the number of backers from each country, and setup all the products in the manager. It will be live for another 2 months.

The pledge manager works like a standard webshop where you choose items you want to get for your credit (the amount pledged during the campaign). You will be able to increase your credit, to pay for shipping and add-ons, if you choose any. You WILL BE ABLE to use PayPal in there!

5. Current payments are processed by Kickstarter, so please contact their help desk if you have any problems with charging your cards. Sorry, but we can't help you in any way, as this is run solely by Kickstarter and we have no influence over this process.

6. We will keep you updated about game development and production status. We won’t be spamming, but we will try making a at least a single update a month, or more if there is anything important to share.

Alright, that’s it for today! Thank you very much for your attention and we will be releasing new updates as soon as we have something exciting to show to you. We hope you will stay excited about Uboot, as it is now entering the most interesting phase of development.

All best and happy gaming!

Just received a final notification that the game is ready to ship, and to check addresses.

I assume this is the case for the EU (not sure if US and RoW is operating on a similar timeframe?)

So fingers crossed it will be a nice Xmas present! Time to get out that copy of Das Boot as a nice and cheery post-turkey film to watch.

Latest KS news - production and approx delivery dates

End of production, beginning of delivery

Hello everyone!
We can finally give you an estimated delivery schedule, as production is drawing to a close!
Production and delivery
All the language editions are currently in print and confection. We will be picking them up from the factory in the following order:
The English and French editions - the 17th and 18th of December; Then, the printing house has its Christmas break until the 6th of January; After that, all the remaining editions (i.e. German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian-Portuguese, Italian, and Polish) will have been produced and assembled by the end of January.

Production is close to be finished, but it is still to early for a cigarette break...
Knowing this, we can arrange the shipping. Our language partners will pick up their copies in December and January, so they should be able to deliver you the games in January and February. The Polish edition should be delivered in February as well. The English edition will be delivered throughout January, February, and March, depending on the country that you live in. Europe will be receiving their games first, followed by the USA, Asia, and Australia.

The above means that shipping will be delayed by 1-3 months from our initial delivery estimates, and we would like to sincerely apologize to everyone for that happening. It is something that we wanted to avoid at all cost, but we ultimately decided that sacrificing quality was not the right way to go, as staying 100% on schedule would not allow us to fix the small issues that we found in the first pre-production copies that were delivered to Essen.

On the plus side, the delay in shipping will give us one additional month to work on the app, and let us assure you that it will be a time well spent. Truth be told, the app already has many more functionalities than we promised during the campaign, and this extra month of attention will allow the guys at Iron Wolf Studio to do even more testing and tweaking before the premiere, and the IT team at InImages to iron out all the creases code-wise. Therefore, with the app being postponed till the end of January, everything should be even more impressive once the boxes finally arrive to your door. And there you have it: the decision to delay production was a very tough one, but as we have mentioned many times before, sacrificing quality is something that we never take lightly (even more so, since the delay is admittedly not a terrible one). We do realize that many of you will feel disappointed not being able to enjoy the game at Christmas time, but we sincerely hope you will understand that our disappointment is even bigger, as everything until the very last moment made us believe that a timely dispatch would be guaranteed. Unfortunately, it has turned out otherwise.

New rules videos
As you already know, we are doing everything we can to make your introduction to the game as smooth as possible. To that end, Bartosz has already started shooting new instructional videos that explain both the core rules, as well as all the role-specific responsibilities. The first one is already up and running, so you can quickly review core rules without the need of even opening the rulebook. Please click on the link below if you would like to see how they are coming along:

The Captain is up next! After we finish all the role videos, there will be even more stuff coming up, as we already have plans for further videos showing new gameplay features that the public hasn’t seen yet.

Testing
In the previous update, you could see how painted components looked like, and today we’ve got just a couple of shots from the countless tests that we conducted throughout November. We have a couple of regular groups, but we also test the game in solo and 2-player modes to make sure that these game variants are on par with the full 4-player experience. Overall, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Although people’s first reactions after reading the rulebook are that the game will be very hard and complicated, then, once they play a mission or two, everybody agrees that the system is very streamlined and intuitive.
Sadly, we sometimes forget to take photos, because we are always very eager to hear new feedback, and once we focus on noting down all the important issues, we sometimes forget to gather everyone for a photoshoot (unless Artur suddenly remembers and yells ‘photos, don’t forget the photos while we are still here!’).

Either way, the tests will intensify even further once the text part of the app is 100% ready, which should happen soon.

Stickers
You might have forgotten about the sticker sheet that we promised you during the campaign, but we do remember about it! And, as always, it is much more impressive than what you saw back in February To ensure the best quality possible, we reached out to a member of the SUBSIM.com community to help us provide a really impressive set of emblem stickers. Therefore, BIG thanks go out to Erik Theberge from Canada for helping us out on this one! What is more, you can see that our infamous mutated chicken from the campaign has also made it here, so we are confident that everyone will be able to choose an emblem of their own to adorn the conning tower of their brand new U-boat:

The most anticipated game vote
Before we finish, there is just one thing we would like to ask for. We do know that you are waiting eagerly to lay your hands on the game, and it might even be one of your most anticipated games of (regretfully!) 2019. Therefore, if you are still excited about our game in spite of the delay, then please vote for U-Boot in the yearly fun BGG ‘Most anticipated games’ contest:

Every vote counts, and we really appreciate any and all contribution to the BGG community that you may wish to make. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for the delay in production, and wish us good luck with finishing the project! The tubes are already flooded, the targets are in our sights, and the torpedo crew is sitting on pins and needles, waiting for the Captain to say the word…
And I’m sure you know what that word is
Happy gaming!
Iron Wolf Studio & PHALANX
PS. Please note the new 'Das Boot' TV series. Not as thrilling as the original, but still good enough to get deeper into the game's theme.
