Looking at the slowly increasing piles of 40k 8th ed books I started to wonder whether other people are in a similar predicament as me,

I play with all sorts of different chaos models which unfortunately means I need all of their rules. This means that when I go to play a 3k pts game on Sunday I'll have to bring:
The Big Rule Book - obviously
Chapter Approved - we play with the most up to date rules
Chaos Space Marine Codex - the majority of my army
Imperial Armour Index Forces of Chaos - Brass Scorpions are fun
Index Chaos - why do I love the biker Sorcerer so much and why didn't GW have their rules updated in the codex!
Codex Daemons - I do love me some Khorney Daemons
Codex Death Guard - Yes, I'm that guy who just takes Mortimer
Codex Thousand Sons - Same problem as above
Phone with FAQs - to be honest I should probably just print out the FAQs and stick them in the books

Luckily I'm not fielding my R&H otherwise I'd have to take an Astra Militarium Codex and Index Imperial Armour Forces of the Astra Militarium too!
I can imagine Imperial soup is something similar.

So how is everyone else's 8th ed rule book collection coming along?

Well, if you are cooking up a rich soup I guess you need to have a lot of cook books.

Just kidding - at least you bring the books.

I bring the Index 1 for a single unit, my DA Codex and the BRB.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Was just about to say the same. If you've built a list that involves units from 6 different factions, it's not a fair complaint about having to carry that many books.

If you're just using Mortarion and Magnus why take the whole codex? Just make a copy of the datasheet and stick it in your rule book

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."
- Mortarion, The Death Lord, The Reaper of Men, Daemon Primarch of Nurgle

Well to be fair, last edition this would have been just chaos, daemons and FW.

If you're just bringing books for the datacard, why not just use a Battlescribe printout? The most verbose version has datasheets and rules, and most units don't have any errors.

Or yeah, just photocopy the datasheet page youself and stick it in the back of another book.

Index xenos 2 or Codex SM, depending on what I'm playing that day. I might bring the BRB. That's it. If I get some FW units (I already have the FW Index for the SMs) I might photocopy the relevant page and slip it into the codex. It's really not an issue in 8th unless you play super-soup, but most soups are only 2 armies so only 2 codexes, or one codex and a few photocopies, not too bad.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Zero. Get a digital device, print out the battlescribe army list with rules. And get the starter set rule cheat sheet.

And have half of the rules be wrong! Thanks Battlescribe!

On a more serious note, it really depends on who I'm playing against or what I'm playing. If doing any of the CA missions or special rules/scenarios--CA's going to be needed. If I'm going to be playing someone relatively new or that I know to be super rules-lawyery, BRB comes with--with sticky notes/tabs poking out for rules I feel that need consideration.

Codex, of course. 3 books tops.
