Rock solid foundations. Judas Priest is probably my favorite band of all time, if I was pressed to choose.

Can't stand Metallica though.

Fair enough, not every band is for everyone. Have you listened to this one though? It's their homage to Lemmy.

Just don't get their appeal.

Ya lost me here, bud. If you like Motorhead, you can see why a hundred million people like Metallica.

Feth yeah! War Ensemble is one of the best metal songs ever recorded.

Really enjoying Power Trip - Nightmare Logic and Pagan Altar - The Room of Shadows.

Both these records were on Banger.TV's 2017 best albums of the year. Pagan Altar are incredible.

Fun fact, I went to junior high with Sam Dunn. He was a couple years older than me, so my only interaction with him was being pushed up against the locker for daring to be an 8th grader in the same hall as the grade 10s

To my ears, Metallica are just adding ‘ah’ to the end of each word.

If you enjoy them, fair dos.

Me? I think they suck, and very much suck. Too much style over substance.

I can find something good to say about every Metallica album.

A lot of my disdain comes from James Hetfield wanting to be a singer instead of just a vocalist. I just can’t stand all the yea yeas, the whoa whoas and the hey hey heys.

And then I watched some kind of monster. And the disdain deepened.

Happy Metal Memory.

Around 20 years ago, mate and I were in the shopping centre (Mall, if your colonially inclined).

He was using the bogs, and I hung around outside. Spotted £20 on the floor. Picked it up, hung around for a while, just in case anyone came looking. They didn't.

Into the 2nd hand record store. Picked up a copy of Ace of Spades (album, not single) on Vinyl. Got it home, and found it also had a Killed By Death picture disc vinyl included!

I don't really go to shows anymore (ears can't take it), I've been to lots over the years, but the last and best concert for me was in 2000, Rob Halford, opening for Queensryche, who opened for Iron Maiden. I ordered the tickets the minute they went on sale. Got 2nd row

Going to a Catholic school in Guelph it was really common to hear other kids insist they listened to Korn, or Slipknot, or Manson to prove they were tough. Most of them didn't but I think it left most of us with the impression that heavy metal (always referred to by its whole name) was noisy, dissonant, and generally unpleasant. I wasn't really musically aware as a kid, I'd been raised on a diet of Harry Chapin and the occasional Bon Jovi and as soon as my little sister could talk the house was all Spice Girls all the time.

Anyway, in 9th or 10th grade I was reading about the Silmarilion (LotR fever was in full effect) and stumbled upon a reference to Nightfall in Middle Earth, looked it up, and was overwhelmed. I can't stress enough how ignorant I felt, I'd written off this entire genre of music and here was this album; energizing, punchy, full of cohesive melodies and these massive harmonies, and it told a story! That last part was a big deal for me, again because I had been raised on Harry Chapin and appreciated the idea that you could have a 5-10 minute song that tells you about the tribulations of some guy who doesn't exist. I rode out high school listening to Blind Guardian, occasionally branching out on a song by song basis, mostly because I didn't know the terminology, download speeds were slow and I'd only occasionally luck out and find something good. (Disposable Heroes was a major highlight.)

I only really started to grasp that there was an entire genre out there when I started to branch out in College. I distinctly remember sharing Blind Guardian with someone (might have been Battlefield? I don't remember) and instead of clamming up like people would do in high school they sent me Nightwish.

I only got into Sabaton four or five years ago, I had heard Primo Victoria before and thought it was allright, but it was actually Carolus Rex that made me sit up and notice. Weirdly enough I was listening to another song of theirs while reading over the track list of Holy Diver, literally hearing 'the Rainbow in the Dark is shining' as I read the track name its referring to. It was like a sign. That got me into Dio, vicariously into Richie Blackmore, and some more modern bands like the Sword that try to maintain that kind of sound.

Rambling aside, I'm firmly in the power metal camp, though I occasionally sneak out over the wall to visit the symphonic metal camp. Nightwish' more recent stuff has been a little too nightwishy for me, and I haven't really jumped at Blind Guardian since Night at the Opera but I still go back to them. Sabaton still holds strong for me and Civil War is like this weird splinter off of that, but you can't mistake them for each other due to very different lead vocals. I rather like Epica because of their extremely over produced sound, rather than despite it.

Most recently I found Apex (the album) by Unleash the Archers, which was a great motivator to work on my Sylvaneth. (And let them take over my signature, apparently), and Dragonslayer by Dream Evil, which is another one of those albums everybody knows one song from, but is actually full of gems.

I think "as far from metal as you can get" is a wee bit of an exaggeration. In the video, Martin Popoff talks about the inclusion of Rush. Heavy metal in the 70s was a different beast, Judas Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny is a prog album. Rush is not metal by today's standards, but they are definitely proto-metal. Alex Lifeson is a bon fide guitar hero and he influenced countless shredders. Plus, Rush are amazing!

Bad Religion - do what you want was the creedo of my high school years. Come to think of it, how did I do so well in the Army lol.

Bad Religion is my all-time favorite band. I’ve seen them seven times (maybe eight... I’ve honestly lost count) and Greg Graffin once (he did an acoustic set as part of his most recent book tour). I also had the pleasure of meeting him and he’s a super nice guy. I also have a Bad Religion tattoo.

I don’t listen to as much metal as I used to. I went from punk to hardcore to metal to post-metal in my teens to early twenties. I still listen to some metal when the mood strikes, especially stoner/doom metal and heavy post-metal (Pelican, Isis, Alcest... that sort of thing). I still love Iron Maiden because as a once-bass player, Steve Harris is my musical idol.

If I had to pick, I’d say my favorite metal band is Kalmah; I’ve been really into them since Swamplord came out in 2000.

UtA is from my hometown! My buddy's band played with them a few times around the scene here. They are pretty rad.

My favorite power metal band right now is Gloryhammer. Their epic album Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards is a homage to all things 40k and DnD.

Do you know who else is amazing and influenced generations of shredders? Pink Floyd, specifically David Gilmour. Still not metal. Not even by past standards.

You have to remember, Black Sabbath started it's existence in the very late 60's. That sets the bar for what is metal, since I think we can all agree that Sabbath is the first true metal band. Even something as raw and in your face as Working Man isn't on the same level as ANYTHING Sabbath did as far as heaviness goes. It's like calling King's X metal.

I enjoy metal quite a bit. I l tend to prefer power metal and folk metal with clean vocals and sci-fi/fantasy themes. More recently I've been listening to more doom metal and progressive metal. I've been enjoying High on Fire, Gojira and Oceans of Slumber.

I really like this cover of Solitude by Candlemass that Oceans of Slumber did, even though the lyrics are depressing:

I think my favorite live show has been Iron Maiden when they were at Ozzfest.

There's few genres I don't like, as long as there's some idea behind it. Say brutal death metal - if it's just off-key riffs, drumming and growls it's not my thing, but if it's something like Nile with an idea behind it then wow!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99KHIkENKBM

The classics are ofc always good, I'm not complaining if someone wants some Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica or Gamma Ray. It's a good way to get more people into the scene where they can discover more exotic things. Finland is also full of bands, some claim we have the highest amount of metal bands per capita. Many of them are good too. Amorphis - a damn good band btw - was already mentioned. Stratovarius is a no-brainer if you like German-styled heavy metal.
Spoiler:

So something else. You all know Nightwish, but maybe a few still don't know Marco Hietala was in a somewhat succesful band long before it along with his brother. Tarot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD1q21dr8tw

Or if people like folk metal stuff one of the first succesful ones was founded when two hungover guys worked it off by beating out some tunes. I give you Finntroll:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkVwA__Fk9g

Or maybe something with heavy social commentary if you know Finnish? Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus might do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ82fGZjUls

As for going full out psychedelic metal, try Oranssi Pazuzu (oranssi meaning orange as in color)....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNFGtm8rFaM

Of course, Sweden always put more money into supporting starting bands so they still outsell us. And to be fair many of their bands are also damn good!

Try some Hypocrisy if you haven't encountered it before:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNlZJFcn4VM

And the same mastermind, Peter Tägtgren with his more synthesizer-heavy project called Pain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=067YF8KHdTM

The issue isn't really what we call metal, it's finding time to check it all out and deciding which new band to listen to. There's a lot, and we need to sleep and work and have other hobbies...

edit: but we shouldn't forget the Norwegians. They've had bad history with "black metal", where a lot of idiots burned churches and some even committed murder to make themself more cred in the scene - but it also spawned some really majestic music. Satyricon wasn't involved in the crimes, and they have even been featured in national events like playing at sporting events and getting to play with the national opera choir!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5GhFL0OWq8

A lot of my favorite metal bands are from Finland, thanks for the links!

Machinae Supremacy. These guys are the soundtrack to my soul.

Greatest band in the universe. Robert is a poet. I got into them in the noughties, when they were unsigned, and basically just put all their stuff up for free, and there's hours worth there. Stuck with them ever since.

And there's no one else out there that sounds quite like them. Imagine slash on guitars and a Mega drive instead of keyboards.

Check out 'player one' (recorded when they were unsigned and zero budget, but still utterly epic), or 'rogue world asylum' (recorded ten years ago, but with the current political climate it is terrifyingly relevant). And listen to 'oki Kumas adventure', 'remnant' and 'the last march of the undead' - that song will break your hearts.

'Winter storm', 'kings of the scene' and the three 'sidology' song say give a great account of their signature sound.
