It is to his credit that he spotted them before they could pull the trigger. Also, he made a calculated decision that eschewing guards and weapons in his office would be a sign of confidence and help to boost morale across Imperium Secundus. The Alphas of course tried to turn it against him but fell into the "close but no cigar" category.
