Its fine for you to feel that way.

Like what you like. Like it to the extent that you like it.

I had a good time.

Boy, that's the second time ITT you thought anyone would care about what you thought about the movie enough to hunt down and watch some youtube video to find out. Bold play, Cotton.

You didn't like it, that's cool. Kind of weird you think people are going to do homework to find out why.

I am telling people my views are summed up by that video, rather than posting a transcript I suggest you watch it. I won't link it because it has naughty words in it and the Mods of this site are trigger happy. If you're not willing to look up differing viewpoints, that's on you.

I tried to watch the review. My review of the review is that it is incredibly unwatchable, leading a review with "If you don't think this way you are an idiot" is a bad idea, and his ripping off of Zero Punctuation as a fast talking and obnoxious reviewer is pretty lame.

0/7 would not suggest

Anyway, do they adequately explain how this could have happened?

There are little bits of backstory shown on newspapers here and there to the effect that the monsters are functionally invulnerable.

Loved the movie. Super sweet. Bunch of weird little details that don’t make sense if you think about it too hard though.

Except to sonics, like a Venom symbiote? And then to bullets?

The movie seems like it hinges on a few things that on first glance don't make a lot of sense, and then upon a deeper look, definitely don't make a lot of sense.

Maybe it should have been set back in the 30's or 40's?

But hell, it did well enough to get a sequel, so details be damned!

No they dont, it just happened and you start the movie X amount of days after the event. And honestly thats a good thing. You can debate and theorize all you want on how it happened, and unlike the Force, them not explaining it makes it so much better. However it happened, it was fast enough that we didnt do a good job of countering it

I got bored enough at work I took the time to look it up. I got about five minutes in before I decided I wasn’t bored enough to listen to his repeated racial and ablist slurs. I worry for anyone who says his words fit their opinion perfectly.

I finally got to see it with friends. Loved it. It’s just unfortunate that the only other group in the screening were noisy and inconsiderate, to the extent that we had to have words with them. But that wasn’t enough to dampen my enjoyment of it.

I watched this expecting something really great. Got something really unique that fell short in so many ways.

I'll start with what I thought was cool -
-An entire movie where everyone communicates in mostly sign language. That is cool.
-The tension that was created by not being able to make a sound while giving birth to a child or stepping on a nail. While a vicious creature beast is right in front of you. That is some serious tension.
-I liked the characters too - Krasinski is a really talented guy.

Okay - now the stuff I didn't like.
-The monsters aren't deadly or unstoppable enough to destroy humanity. The setting for this movie should have been on a deserted island or something. It suspends belief for me when the military is destroyed but this little family managed to survive.
-Where are their weapons? Yeah I get these things are "indestructable" but you have access to a whole towns arsenal of weapons. I would at least have a few Glock 10MM and some .50 BMG ready if one of these things start sneaking through my house because I accidentally stubbed my toe or farted in the middle of the night.
-When the father runs out to save his children who are being attacked by humanity destroying beasts...he forgets his shotgun? Then decided to pick up an Axe? Then commits suicide to save his kids but drops the axe instead of trying to do some damage to the beast? Come on - idiotic.

We all know why he doesn't take the shotgun though. It so a Women can save the day - the power of woman must be embraced! Women save the day while scardy boy hides in the corner with the baby. This - is - becoming - sickening.

Does literally every movie have to have this kind of subliminal message now?

Wind it back a bit there.

1. We don't know if these were what was used to wipe out humanity of if they are basically the mop up organisms dropped to finish off the small pockets of hiding humans which is honestly how I viewed it.

2. This is a family that had a kid die from noisy toy. They have 2 other small children and a baby on the way. A loaded and cocked gun (because it not being cocked would kill you when they heard it and hit you before you could hit them) isn't an ideal thing to have around when monsters with sensitive hearing are around. Oh, and if you have to shoot you're essentially dead. The mom only shoots when she realizes that they found a frequency that disrupts their ability to function. Otherwise killing one would result others coming.

3. So many mistaken assumptions here I don't know where to start.

I'm also not sure where you're getting the Woman saves the day thing. She's literally the reason the monster comes. The husband sacrifices himself to save his children in a way he couldn't for his youngest. Let's not get into the fact that he had to be the one to go out since she JUST GAVE BIRTH. The mom saves her kids in the end yes because of the work dad did and her own abilities. You're reaching here man.

Not that there aren't issues with the movie (sand everywhere) but the stuff you name simply aren't them.

I'm talking about the father not taking a weapon to go help his kids. He brought it into the house to try to save his wife earlier...then just forgets about it? Come on - that is a seriously dumb move and plot device so that the wife has the gun at the end.

I'm fine with the sacrifice - it was actually really touching. I am not fine with the weak effort of not at least trying to survive or injure the beast.

Your explanation of how humanity might have died is what I would call reaching. You shouldn't be required to reach to figure out the setting of your story. I find that REALLY weak.

Please elaborate on my failed assumptions...

I watched this the other day and didn't like it at all. The opening scene in the shop was fantastic but the film very quickly fell apart for me. Way too many moments that made zero sense if I thought about it for more than a few seconds.

For some reason one of my biggest issues was
Spoiler:
the 'waterfalls drown out other sounds' thing. If the sound of a waterfall can drown out all other noises and stop the creatures finding them, why didn't the family just grab a load of speakers and play waterfall sounds in their house 24/7? And why were they the only family to have realised this? If it happened in real life, there would be plenty of people in tents and makeshift huts camped around waterfalls and anything else that made a continuous loud noise. Not sure why this bugged me so much, but it did.

Each to their own though. There are plenty of people who did like this film, so if it does get a sequel I hope it lives up to the fans' expectations.

My thoughts on that:

Spoiler:
From looking at the newspapers and notes the father has in the basement, it seems the creatures we see in the film are the only type, there's nothing to suggest they're part of a multi-species invasion.

Anyway, it's a really cool film, very impressive how they manage to get you engaged with the characters, their lives and relationships and make that stuff detailed with almost no dialogue. Although I found it kept reminding me of a lot of things at different points; a bit of 'Signs', a bit of 'Don't Breathe', a bit of 'Jurassic Park'.

If you want to get really nitpicky, why can’t the creatures that hear you from miles away hear your heartbeat when they’re in the same room with you? Also how do they not run into trees when they’re sprinting thru the forest?

And do they only hunt humans? If they hear everything and attack it... wouldn't they be chasing whales and earth worms?
Earth worms are loud enough for a human to hear them.

As long as the wind is blowing through leaves you'd be safe to make sound right? Or just run a generator? Or set up hundreds of wind chimes?

Such a stupid movie.

At one point they explicitly attack a racoon making noise.

How cool would it have been if we saw them busting through trees because they can't see them?

It would have done 2 things for me. #1 it would have made the beasts scarier. #2 it would have made the beast seem tougher to me.

Also yeah...For having such great hearing - their hearing is pretty terrible when the plot demands it.

I feel like they can, there were a few scenes where the Mom has to hide herself when in the same room as them (such as ducking behind the falling sheet of water) rather than just freezing in place.

Overall I loved this movie. I can see some of the nitpicks above, but maybe they'd address those things a bit in a sequel . Would be awesome for them to find some other survivors, imo.
