Yes, my group plays games that are no longer supported. Although as time goes by members start to drop off or drift away from them.

My two cents,

I also played Space Hulk and Necromunda while they weren't supported, and am happy that they are back.

That´s interesting. How does Dreadfleet play? I never got the chance to try it. According to rumours the event card deck could cripple ships on their own. Though I always liked the aesthetic of the models. It would also be great, if GW would have the guts to publish a new edition of the road warrior game Dark Future.

@OP:
I still play two versions of 40K (2nd & 3rd-6th rules mix), WHFB (9th ruleset), two versions of Doom (2004 version & 2017 version), Space Hulk (newest version), Deathwatch Overkill and Imperial Knight Renegades (custom rules).

Dreadfleet is a great beer and pretzels fun game, at least imo

The card deck can seriously skew the game, true, but it tends to whipsaw back and forth so it generally is a wash. If you just enjoy playing rather than getting super competitive it adds to the fun

God. I remember playing Dark Future with matchbox cars converted with guns scavenged from toys. Good times

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I don't get this odd distinction people have between "unsupported" and "old editions". If an older edition of a game is no longer in production and no longer having new material produced for it by the company, it is by definition an unsupported game.

I mean, nobody's going to seriously argue that the experience of playing 2nd or 3rd/4th 40K editions is a similar experience to 8th, right? To one degree or another they're fundamentally different games, from the mechanics to the aesthetic to the tone and content of the background material.

Having a few games of an older edition of an extant game shouldn't cause the extant version any more "harm" than playing an older no longer extant game, and if it does then there's more and bigger problems going on than a few folk deciding to indulge their nostalgia or stick with a prior version they prefer.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Do you find that the scenarios have replay value? I've been chipping away at my set for years, but apart from going "pew-pew" with my son, have yet to actually play.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

My group still plays some Necromunda (original version) and Epic. A bunch of us also still have Warhammer armies too but we rarely play. I think the reason is simple: we're a smallish club and attracting new blood is important and while the older members can easily get a game of Necromunda going it can be difficult for new people to jump in. For that reason, playing older editions of games is usually very much a group-specific endeavour. The biggest problem is finding people to play with.

I voted no but wished I still did play some of the old games, a few already mentioned here (Man O War, Epic etc) I have very fond memories of and would happily play them again if I knew someone who was interested

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Can only really speak for myself, but every game is different, even on the same scenario, because of the vaguaries of the card deck. wind direction and which ships you place where. A lot like 40K games will be different even if you are playing the same mission again with the same lists.

The models are a blast to paint too. Nearly done painting mine..

Really, as has been mentioned above, you have to bite the bullet and collect two armies. Then get someone else to play with you.

Fortunately a lot of the out of support games look and play brilliantly so you probably won't have too much trouble building up a group beyond the initial one or two players.

No.... I’m mainly too young to have played any of these games
:(
I tried to teach myself how to play the original necromunda but I just couldn’t wrap my head around the rules.

Define 'unsupported'? I answered 'yes' by my own definition, which may be incorrect with this discussion.

Me and others in my group frequently play Osprey games that were published as stand-alone books, that as far as I know received little to no updates and rules changes; particularly 'Dragon Rampant'. Also, my pathfinder group will not likely switch over to 2 ed. any time soon, though I am aware that's a different animal.

What is dead cannot die...so in that vein I’ll be playing Warmaster next week at the club and a Tounament in Scotland in June if I can get the nod from the boss.

I’m lucky we have a good group of long time players and I can think of few games system that won’t garner some interest if you can demonstrate some enthusiasm for it.

I’d also suggest the many game specific Facebook groups are a good source of info, chat, models and new players.

Absolutely I play older unsupported games. Anybody who still plays WFB does. Currently I play 6th Ed. WFB and 3rd Ed. 40K. I've been entertaining the thought of going back to BFG, but my hatred of pewter prevents me currently.

I also mod at a website created SPECIFICALLY for playing older/unsupported games.

www.classichammer.com

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

So you like Dark Future like me? There is a video game in the making:

Looks promising because of the "slow motion feature" implemented in the game.

I find the solution to this is pretty simple, but expensive and time consuming. You need enough forces of your own for others to play. If they do not need to do anything but "play" the game they are generally willing to give it a shot.

My entire 20 years in the hobby in one statement. Believe me, its depressing that Dakka and a couple of other forums are basically the only group of people I get to share my hobby with.
