Somewhere in south-central England.

It looks fething awful.

Not bad in itself, as such. There is a definite niche for Assassin's Creed style retro-futuro-cyber-punk-tastic-bow-wielding-Bourne-alike action heroes.

But.

You know.

Robin Hood actually has a history and heritage.

Can't that be respected a bit more than super-gluing it on the front of a blah-di-blah action film?

Cultural appropriation, is what it is.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I think its partly due to nerd/geek culture being over mined for (hopefully) an easy payday by churning out license free or public domain 'super' movies to a vague action movie playbook

I havent been to Nottingham in a while but I don't remember it looking like Stormwind and Kings Landings freaky offspring

Make it a fantasy version, change the characters, whatever. It's not like the "original" legend isn't mostly made-up anyway.

But with all the car chases and gunfights, why not just set it in the modern day? Or at the very least, make it a western or a gangster flick? That's what they want to be making, after all.

I get it, we've already had many "historically accurate" Robin Hood films, so maybe it's time to try something different. Just not this, this looks bad. If you're going to do the Robin Hood story in a different way, then really go for it. Make it modern day, future sci-fi, full fantasy, just not some sort of weird modernized-historical-video game look.

And, for the record, I happen to like Prince of Thieves.

looks trash, I blocked all ads from my fb account, the guy doesn't even draw while shooting, looks like he's doing a finger gun motion to kill someone.

Meh, Im tired of the same old retreads. One of my favorite Robin Hood angles was a book where he was an outlaw freedom fighter (and unhinged man) in a post apocolyptic setting, where I think a viral outbreak kills most of the world. He inspires people to rise up against a Negan-esque warlord. It reminded me a lot of the movie version of the Postman, but in England with a bad ass bowman instead of a lying jerk.

I think the first season, Robin was some black haired actor, then season 2 they switched to some blonde guy. It was a typical, low budget BBC show, but it just felt gritty and dirty like it should be.

To be fair, it was on ITV not BBC, and they didn't just switch actor, the original Robin (Michael Praed) was killed in the season 2 finalé only for a travelling nobleman called Robert who was sympathetic to the poor (played by Jason Connery, son of Sean) to take up the mantle.

Neither actor went on to much, but it did also feature a young Clive Mantle as little John and Ray Winstone as Will Scarlet, both of whom became fairly well known. It also invented the concept of the Saracen warrior in the merry men, which I think most subsequent adaptations have just assumed is part of the myth (Azeem in PoT, Djaq in the recent BBC show etc). I think there was even a devil-worship subtheme in the show that also made its way into PoT.

Wow! I thought I might be the only lad who had heard of this show, let alone know anything about it.

Trailer makes it look like a sequel to that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword movie that came out last year with Charlie Hunnam. That did lousy that the box office. I don't expect this will do well, either.

(They'll never take my Robin of Sherwood DVDs! And that soundtrack made me discover Clannad.)

Over wins the Internet (also have a feeling that many of the props came out of the Robin of Sherwood leftovers)

Preach!

Also.....face the front, Little Ron.

For our American chums who may not be familiar with the single greatest adaptation of the legend, it was written by Tony 'Baldrick' Robinson. And isn't far off a kid's version of Blackadder.

Absolutely amazing show. Hunt it down wherever you can, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

This kind of trailer makes me wonder how things ever get to this point. There's a sequence in one of those "behind the scenes" documentaries included with the DVD special features for The Phantom Menace where LucasFilm does its first in-house screening of the movie and everyone can tell it's garbage and everyone knows the only direction can be forward, regardless of the fact that it's garbage. But there were so many moments leading up to that where George & Co. could have said, "Oh man, wait a minute - let's not make a pile of gak! Haha, that was a close one. Scrap Jar Jar. Scrap the eight year old Darth Vader. What the hell was a I thinking?"

I just imagine some little gak pitching this vision of Robin Hood, talking about how it will be "hip" and a "fresh take on an epic" and an "action-packed roller coaster."

I was also introduced to this by Matt Easton (Scholagladiatoria) on Youtube. And I have to agree with him, it looks like a big steaming pile.

Yes, the Robin Hood tales are fantasy, to some extent. But it's mot this kind of fantasy. If you wanted to make a film like this, don't pretend it's about Robin Hood when it's clearly not. You're allowed to take inspiration from folk tales, legends, history - whatever, and apply it to something new. It's even normal, and can often lead to brilliant results. Take {i]O Brother, Where Art Thou?[/i], it's largely an adaptation of the Odyssey, but it doesn't pretend to be the Odyssey. I would've been put off if it'd been called that, but as a work inspired by it, it's brilliant.

Apart from that this movie looks stupid and uninspired, and there's no excuse for that. The action seems bad, the CGI seems bad, the costumes look bad - there's just nothing compelling me to see it. Not even one little thing, and that's rare.

I think its partly the eternal circle of hell that is movie development by committee so any promising idea gets chiselled in the bland formula du jour (Neil Gaiman does a splendid short story regarding this phenomenon "“The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories”)

And thanks to the MCU everybody wants that sweet franchise starter for the easy free moneys

...wow.

I understand 'alternate' versions of movies. However, when doing them, I'm always more sold when the alternate version itself has a cohesive aesthetic. I've never seen so many bizarre/unmatching visuals crammed into a single trailer. If you're going to go alternate, go alternate but at least pick something cohesive and collected. Yikes.

Netflix watch for me. I don't mind the cast that I saw shown.

That is not an improvement.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. Remember when movies came about because somebody wanted to tell a story? Not just because some film studio realised a particular myth, legend or franchise hadn't been exploited for a few years?

Thing is I actually like the sounds of a Robin Hood heist movie, but... not if it's this.

I'm interested in seeing it but the whole time all I could think to myself was that they should drop the Robin Hood titled. Just make it it's own thing.

Agreed. To me it looks like a good time and I enjoy all the actors in it. I think some idiot exec thought it'd do better with the Robin Hood title similar to the Cloverfield sequels instead of as a stand alone and tossed it and a couple line changes in to make it a "Robin Hood" movie instead of a urban fantasy-ish heist movie.

Right Behind You

If someone wants to make a Robin Hood franchise, why not go with heist movie setups? You don't have to fit all of Robin Hood into one movie and you can even keep the Sheriff around for multiple movies. You have a setup movie where Robin collects a group of skilled rogues (some maybe a bit more heroic while some are definitely criminal) to pull off a big job for profit. You get someone like Guy of Gisborn as your muscle type villian that you can get rid of, maybe have a betrayal in there somewhere, and somethings that have the thieves deciding to help out the peasants in the end. The second you do something were they have to protect/steal back a ransom for King Richard that the Sheriff is plotting to steal and blame on Robin Hood. Maybe you bring back the criminal that betrayed the group last time to act as Robin's opposite in this one. The last you go with the Sheriff learning that Marion has been helping Robin all along, which leads to her rescue and final showdown with the Sheriff. It wouldn't be that hard to do Robin Hood without making him some super soldier.

Tim Minchin is an interesting choice for Friar Tuck... Beyond that, I'm not expecting much from this, but it looks like it might be brainless fun. Or if might just be bad... Guess we'll have to wait and see.
