Especially in Canada and parts along the Canadian border. There are swathes of land bigger than entire countries that are entirely empty of human touch. Even if a biologist saw a Dire Wolf from a distance they might still think it was a normal wolf without something to show it’s size.

I still think that the chances of a direwolf are exceptionally small. You've more chance of finding smaller species, perhaps some kind of wild-cat breed, but it would be highly unlikely to be a dire wolf. More likely you'll find insects, rodents and other species that are often very niche species that might become locked within a valley or other area. Highly mobile species, especially wolves, are more likely to roam and spread.

Considering that wolves roam wide ranges and that the last findings of dire wolves are somewhere in the region of 9 to 10 thousand years ago, that's one major feat of hiding. Granted woolly mammoth did manage to survive until very recent times, but only in a dwarf form on a small island (as a result of island dwarfism)

Whilst I'd love dire wolves to have survived against all the odds, I doubt they have when one looks at how few many mega fauna were lost in this interstadial period and how many have continued to be lost through the era.

I do not disagree, but an explaination of it may be found in your very post.

Wolves do tend to spread. Given that there are parts of Canada where (YAY!) the white man has never set foot, this might be something spreading down from the great white north.

I mean, hell, Pennsylvania still has cougars despite the insistence of the Game Commission they're extinct. BTW: if you get one on camera along with something that gives it scale, put it on youtube, the state game guys will 'lose' it somehow if you give it to them.

I highly doubt dire wolves survived, if only because interbreeding with grey wolves would have left them indistinguishable by now.

While any surviving Dire Wolf population would almost certainly be interbred with Grey Wolves, if that population was isolated in one area they would likely remain relatively pure.

Plus Dire Wolves and Grey Wolves coexisted when the Dire Wolves were still around and remained distinct species, so its possible that something else would keep them from completely mixing together. Much like how coyotes and wolves sometimes breed, creating Coywolves, but both still remain distinct at the same time.

It is worth noting that the largest Grey Wolf subspecies occasionally can reach the size of Dire Wolves, and given that nobody has ever successfully sequenced Dire Wolf DNA, its possible that some of the larger Grey Wolves are actually Dire Wolf/Grey Wolf hybrids.

Even if it were a Dire Wolf, there is awfully little mystery about dire wolves too. They are just a different species of wolf.
That is the problem with mystery. It is only mysterious until you learn about it. And seeing how much we have come to learn about our world, well, goodbye mystery.
Luckily, there is still plenty of mystery to be had in the deep seas and outer space! Only problem: getting there.

Labs have limited resources to run tests (such as how long a test takes to run, how many machines you have, computer time). This isn't a high priority case, either, so it can get bumped down the queue by other, more time-critical requests coming in. Then, the results of the tests have to be analysed and interpreted.

Not everything is like on TV where it just gets put into a big machine and you get a nice little slip of paper out which tells you everything you need to know

The reason I asked was that the BBC article said they were expecting lab results within the week, and that was last month. Believe it or not, my job does entail working with people who work in labs on occasion. Sometimes on such amazingly pressing things as 'why are our employees suffering acute respiratory failure?' so yes, I am aware that such things happen, was just curious if anyone had heard anything about this yet.

Well, the lack of media attention for the outcome tells us that it was most likely not a direwolf or anything exciting.

It sounded like the results were in and the sample was sent to another lab because of it.

Did anyone get the name of the other lab?

Most people probably don't even know that Dire Wolves were a real thing. Its not surprising this isn't a priority.

Media are also notorious for never following up stories, even some quite major events get little follow-up. You can see this even in the way they report, every story is new to the media and you rarely get a "You remember we reported last week on...." (in fact I can only recall hearing that on the "filler" news that is often the only bit of good news you hear on the news - and that's only when its a slow day for new stories)

Or they still haven’t got a clue what it is (my hope).
In all likelihood, it isn’t anything exciting though.

Probably not, but it's crazy how often it's small things like this that go relatively underreported could be a big deal down the road.

The mysterious “werewolf”-like creature that baffled Montana wildlife officials — and captured the curiosity of the country — when it was killed last month was actually a slightly deformed female gray wolf, DNA tests revealed Monday.

The beast, which had an oversized head, huge paws and oddly shaped ears, was shot dead by a rancher near Denton on May 16. Animal officials had no idea what the creature was for weeks.

But the canine’s body was later shipped to a forensic laboratory in Ashland, Oregon, where its genetic material was compared with thousands of DNA samples from wolves, coyotes and dogs, according to US Fish and Wildlife Service officials.

Scientists found there is no need to fear the full moon — the unusual critter was an 84.5-pound gray wolf from the northern Rocky Mountains. It was roughly 4 feet long and between 2 and 3 years old, officials said.

“Within species, there can be variability,” said Mary Curtis, a geneticist with the Wildlife Service.

It was just a small pawed vulgarian.

Now theoretically, if you were a were-wolf and changed intot he form of a wolf, wouldn't your DNA also be that of the Grey Wolf you morphed into?
