Are the new stuff optional or not? That's the difference between new edition and supplement. Supplements add new ways to play but they are optional and default is off.

If you go to play game of AOS are you expected to play with these new rules or not? If yes then that's new edition. If not it's supplement. Without agreeing specifically can I shoot out of combat against anything once this your supplement arrives? If yes that's supplement. If no then that's new edition. Can I use command abilities of any character rather than just general? If yes new edition, if not supplement.

Fair enough. I can't refute this at all.

That said, I am sure everything will be optional but it will be the COMMUNITY who will say it's not. GW tells us everything is optional. Add or take away. Sadly it's the players that say we can't do it.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I’ve found AoS above all non historical war games I’ve played has people willing to house rule gak. Even at the club, where RAW and “official” usually rules supreme, nobody plays standard terrain, measuring from the models, etc... many but not all even do away with the double turn.

If something is truly broken or still broken in this new edition (either for balance or fun) I’d assume people would try to fix it.

AoS is such a casual ruleset I don’t know why you wouldn’t. It’s all basically just a bunch of suggestions of how to maybe play with your collection of mi iatures.

My main query (without reading through all of this so sorry if asked) is to me “editions” like fantasy and 40k meant, whether the changes were big or small - a new version of the rules.

Now this is obviously that, in some form anyway, but in the past that has meant new Codex/AB to make them current for the edition. Is this a change we will likely see? All the books coming out again? Or is it more likely business as usual with new battletomes coming and the old ones staying relatively unchanged (maybe some of the early ones..).

I haven’t delved into AoS but was looking at bringing my Ogres over, but if new books are coming. I’m then torn..
