Out of curiosity (not that it matters much, because it's already waitlisted), but does anyone know the full contents of last year's high roller packages?

Really, really bummed I missed out on it this year. I hear nothing but good things about the high roller package, and would really have liked to grab one for myself.

@Ajax

It was pretty bad ass: several boxed games, custom battlefoam bag, GW art print, shirt, pint glass, fast registration line, early reg for the next year, lots of markers and counters, shadespire, etc. It was TONS of stuff.

Hey everyone, down to the last 16 tickets for the Friendly, already! Make sure to let folks know to not wait if they want to play, please: https://lasvegasopen.squarespace.com/shop/warhammer-40000-friendly-czn6n

Yeah, the AoS package already sold out, so it looks like it will be full in the not distant future, too.

I think with the new edition on the way it will be a big hit and we'll see AoS events grow and more of them pop up, too.

Hey everyone, you all have asked and we listened! Frankie and I (Reece) are heading to Vegas tonight to try and get more space for the event, which means if it works out, many of you on the wait list for events like the 40k Champs, narrative or Friendly will have a chance to grab space in these awesome events. I just wanted to give you all the heads up so you can be prepared when and if those tickets become available.

Also, we will be at the Gentleman's GT too, so if anyone is there come by and say hi!

Alrighty, so Frankie and I got back from Vegas after scouting out the new space and not only is it good, it's great!

We signed on the dotted line and plan on opening up the new tickets for sale on Monday the 25th at 10:00am PST.

The additional space will be for the 40k Champs, 40k Narrative and 40k Friendly. If you want to participate, please be ready to snag a ticket at 10:00am as we anticipate most if not all of them will sell right away as we have a lot more people on the wait lists than we have room to add.

Thanks and good luck!

On the back of a hog.

512 players start. So after round one thats up to 256 wins, after round two thats 128, then 64, 32, 16, 8 after round six.

So... are we doing top 16 now? I actually prefer the top 16 adepticon format. Let some guys with ties not automatically get bumped out.

I believe their intent is to still do a top 8 only, because ties will knock some people out. I don't know exactly how many people they are adding, but I know that last year they had five people go 6-0 with about 448 actually playing out of 512 tickets sold. Since people will always drop out right before the event, if they add 100 spots and have 612 tickets, it would probably be about 560-570 people actually playing. While this could yield 9 undefeated players, with ties its not that likely. Im guessing if they are adding ~100 spots that we will go from five to about seven 6-0 people after two days. This does mean that having a tie is more likely to knock you out, but the odds of you going 6-0 and missing the top 8 are going to be pretty low.

I'm not at all part of the LVO staff though, so Reece would have to confirm his views on the matter, thats just how I read it. Adding a tenth game to the LVO schedule would be super difficult so I doubt they are doing that.

Hey everyone, if you missed out on the Warhammer 40,000 Championships, Friendly or Narrative event for the LVO 2019, then today is your luck day as we’ve added more space!

https://lasvegasopen.squarespace.com/shop/

And no need to add another round, yet. Jifel explained it well but further, even if all 620 players show up, and somehow no one ties by some miracle, then we'd have 9 undefeated players after round 6 so we'd drop the lowest scoring undefeated player from the top 8. If some how, some way two players have the same BP, we then go to SoS, then sports, then paint for the final tie breaker. But, in 8 years of running events, we've literally never had a full bracket of undefeated players. One LVO, there was only 1 player in the top 8 that was actually undefeated, lol. Ties become more prevalent the further you go as the players get better and better.

Playing with the numbers I do not foresee us needing a 10th round until we hit the 760+ player range.

Reece, with adding more players to the 40k Championships, is there consideration to going from a top 8 to a top 16?

If the venue is going to augment the amount of participants, would FLG consider increasing the odds, however marginal, of additional players making the cut?

Increasing the amount of players while not rewarding the field would seem a bit off.

You could also look at it from an analytical standpoint, increasing the field to potentially 620 players from 512 is roughly a 21% increase in player participation.

Whereas going from top 8 to top 16 is only a 1.3% increase.

With 8 months out, I'm sure a potential solution could be made available...

I’m sure the top 16 players would not mind the extra playoff game, especially considering the time, travel, and dollars spent to be in that position.

I’d like to hear your thoughts when convenient.

Thanks.

Reece addressed this a bit with this in his last post:

I do not have a timestamp for you but there was also a discussion of this in the last Signals:

https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2018/06/22/signals-from-the-frontline-597-additional-40k-tickets-for-the-lvo-and-community-news/

TLDR was math and experience did not dictate an additional round at 620.

@Casey

40k Champs sold out again in 2.5 hours! So nuts, very exciting to see how much people are enjoying 8th ed.

See you there, buddy!

@NotThisTime

Answered the first part of your question already in the thread above, buddy.

However, the thing is to go 10 rounds you'd have to make the top 16 play 4 rounds of 40k in 1 day which to be frank: sucks. We'd have to start round 7 at like, 5:30am on Sunday. Or, you'd have to play round 7 on day 2, meaning they play until likely midnight after we give them time to eat dinner.

It's also not realistic to expect our staff to put in what would end up being like an 18 hour day on the 4 round day with likely only about 6 hours of sleep or less and then after the event help with breakdown...and breakdown is not fun, lol. We'd quickly find ourselves with a dearth of qualified staff members willing to come back and make the event possible year after year.

The benefit to get that potentially 1 extra undefeated player and 7 other, non-undefeated players is negligible in the big picture other than to those players affected (but to be fair to them it is a huge deal which we totally get). But in order to make that happen it means many, many more people who are already busting their butt have to do even more.

Further, with typical attrition it is entirely possible that when dice roll round 1 we will have 512 or less actually there. Last year of the 512 registered we had like 450 show up? The year before we had 398 show up. Between a 10% and 20% attrition ratio. So, the entire discussion may be moot and then you'd have to change plans on the fly, etc.

Long story short, going 10 rounds is unlikely to occur for at least another 2 LVO's. You never know of course, things change and we remain flexible, but in my mind the solution is to let it ride until we come up with a way to comfortably play the number of rounds in the time allotted to be fair to the players and to the staff. We've batted around a lot of ideas including having round 1 be Thursday night, etc. but then that comes with it's own set of challenges. Until then I and the staff are comfortable with the idea of making it work as it stand as the odds are vastly in favor of the outcome being that we still only have 8 or fewer undefeated players for the finals which fulfills our basic premise with the event at this time. I get where you are coming from but we've yet to find an amenable solution given the inflexible limitation of time that we are currently working against.

Ultimately, if you want to make the finals: win all your games! Your fate is in your control

Edit:

And I suppose it also bears saying that the expansion was to accommodate more people who wanted to come. That was the underlying motivation. Adding space late in the game (contracts are hammered out years in advance in most cases) is a big financial risk on our part. So just to be clear, we wanted to allow as many people to come as was possible so everyone could have a good time. That I think was where the fundamental disconnect may occur between someone looking at the 40k Champs purely as a competitor vs. where we're coming from as organizers may occur.

Good points Reece, as I missed your earlier reply, thank you for that breakdown buddy.

As you already know with any growing entity, typically revenue grows inline with costs.

But as you point out, you run into logistical issues like scheduling, staffing, etc... that may not be immediately apparent.

Looking forward to the event.

Happy to help!

And yeah, you are of course correct that growth = more revenue.

But the X factors are the inflated cost of the expansion, the risk that you may not sell enough tickets to break even (although looking at the wait list we felt confident it would work out) and the cost of making all those extra tables! At this point each table for us is expensive. We have a full set of GW or ITC terrain on each one of those which incurs a cost to acquire, build, paint, repair, transport and store.

Thankfully those are largely fixed costs but as we've been growing every year and cycling out terrain we didn't feel was good enough for our current standards, we've never had a chance to actually enjoy the benefit of having that expense covered, lol. Often getting the table set up+the cost of the space+Misc. is significantly more than the revenue generated by the players occupying that space that year. So it is a lot more of a risk than people may think when they simply multiply the ticket price x attendees and then think we're just rolling in dough, or something, lol. We are 100% playing the long game with this. Plus, it may require more staff to accommodate the extra attendees and that of course costs a significant amount of money, too. You often don't realize any actual profit on growth space to cover overall event costs until a year or two later if you are lucky. That's why I say it is a financial risk for us to do it this way.

Anyway, not to dig into the nuts and bolts of it too much, but suffice it to say we will always try to give the attendee the experience they are looking for so long as we are logistically able to do so.
