The airport is officially known as "London Luton"
Reasonably local to me there's Lydd airport which is "London Ashford", considering Ashford's about 55 miles from South East London to begin with and Lydd's about a further 20 miles coast-bound from Ashford that seems to be stretching the definition of both "London" and "Ashford" at least to breaking point if not beyond. I can only imagine the disappointment of visitors landing at London Ashford Airport only to be confronted with Lydd.
Geographically, Lydd airport's closer to France than London.

I think that's not so much a "North/South demarcation" than a "civilisation ends at this point" thing ...

There seems to be some disagreement in that link of where exactly the Watford line is.
Or which Watford. From a Londoners point of view, rest of the UK begins at Watford, Hertfordshire.
"North of Watford" is common phrase on a Londoners viewpoint on where the divide is.
There is some truth to that, Watford is either the first major town outside London, or the last quasi-metropolitan suburb.
Legally it is the former, but its part of the tube network and you can travel through to centre of Landon without passing any greenery that is not a an urban park or playing field. Automatically Appended Next Post: simonr1978 wrote: The airport is officially known as "London Luton"

Neither are in London, but due to how spread out cities are in the new world, the distance between Luiton and london is short hop to anyone who is not Eurioopean and used to a European sense of scale.
Luton is not London, oddly enough that conversation came up two days ago when my friend in Watford was planning to travel to 'London Luton airport' for his holiday flight with his new GF. We agreed that while it is nowhere near London from our point of view, from an international perspective it was servicable as an airport for London, and it made good marketing listed as such. Luton has successfully competed with Gatwick and Heathrow for government funding for expansion to handle London air traffic. So it works it seems.

There's lots of "up north"
first off I consider the Suffolk - Norfolk boarder to be going north (and they are strange people up in them there marshes). Then there's up north as in going to Yorkshire. Then there's REALLY up north as in going to Scotland.
Basically if its north its north its just varying degrees of going up north. South and West work the same, with a special exception that London is London even though its "in the south" its not "the south"

I'm geographically torn.
As a Native Scot, you're all soft southerners really.
But having lived in Kent for, erm....diddly-dum....27 years (crikey), anywhere north of London is The North.
