You cannot Advance Twice in a Phase. What does Advance do?

It add d6 to your Movement Characteristic for the rest of the phase and prevents you from Shooting and Charging for the rest of the turn.

Thus, you can only add d6 to your Movement Characteristic once per phase. You can still move twice with this enhanced Movement Characteristic.

Maybe I left a bit out. From that same FAQ:

Q: Can a unit ever Advance twice in a single phase?
A: No.

Yes, I saw that. Again, it was under rules errata.

So, which takes precedence when you have a conflict between a stratagem and a standard rule?

If the odds of rolling three 1's when rolling 3 dice to make a 2+ Wound Roll is really 216:1 then how come it happens in every frakking game?

What conflict do you speak of?

RAW Metabolic Overdrive states; "Use this Stratagem in your Movement Phase, after moving a Tyranids unit from your army. You can make a second move (including Advancing, if you wish), but when you do so you must roll a dice for each model in the unit. For each roll of 1, inflict a mortal wound on the unit. The unit cannot shoot or make a charge move this turn."

The stratagem says it procs *after* you finished moving a Tyranid unit (and if you wanted to Advance you could not *finish* moving a Tyranid unit until the Advance result modified it's Move Characteristic).

The stratagem says when it procs you can make a second move *including advancing* if you wish. Nothing in the stratagem addresses any previous Advance your unit may have made.

It seems to me the stratagem allows a Tyranid unit to move a second time, including an <optional> Advance.

So is the stratagem just poorly worded?

The previously cited FAQ says 'no you can't Advance twice';

However, that FAQ was written to clarify the rules, and did not specifically mention Metabolic Overdrive - as stratagems almost universally break/bend/create rules by their very nature (by allowing you to shoot heavy weapons after advancing, move/charge after reinforcing, add new units to your list mid-battle, etc.

So, as stratagems were designed to break rules, wouldn't what the stratagem says to do take precedence over the rules, unless an errata/FAQ specifically mentions the stratagem in question?

EDIT: Would also like to add that where it says you cannot Advance twice, it isn't even on the topic of stratagems.

From the tyranid FAQ :

Q: Can a unit ever Advance twice in a single phase?
A: No.

Q: If a unit has Advanced in a phase, and is given the
opportunity to move again in the same phase, what is their
Move characteristic?
A: Their Move characteristic for the second move would
still be the value as modified from the Advance.
For example, if a unit with a Move characteristic of 5"
Advances in a Movement phase, and the result of the
dice rolled for the Advance is 4, its Move characteristic
would be modified for that phase to 9". As such, if it was
given the opportunity to move again in that phase, its
Move characteristic would still be 9".

Taken together, this means:
1. You can move twice.
2. You can Advance once, gaining 1d6 to your Move.
3. If you Advance the first time you move, the enhanced Move is still in effect during your second move. If you did not Advance during your first move, you may elect to do so during your second move.

Its somewhat contradictory because the FAQ tells us that you cannot advance twice in a single phase and in the next question it allows the additional movement, which is like advancing twice.

Which is an incorrect reading of the rules. Advance is modifying your Move Startistic for the Phase, it is not the act of using that modified move.
