I used to have the old plastic stormtroopers with single pose

I have lots of the single pose plastic SM tactical squads, I have also 2 squads of 2nd/ 3rd ed plastic terminators with the rotating hips

I actually have a box of those plastic Stormtroopers. Got them very cheap too- just $5 for the box. I don't even play Guard.

I have a few older models that I've acquired off of eBay and such. I'm currently painting a set of metal Space Marine Scouts with pistols and knives that I think date back to 3rd edition (so late 1990s). Last year I also picked up an old set of "Heroes of the Adeptus Astartes" that contained the metal models for Marneus Calgar, Azrael, Dante, Logan Grimnar, The Emperor's Champion, and a couple of different SM Captains. I love the old models, but for me it isn't nostalgia as I haven't been playing for anywhere near that long. I just like the feel of those solid metal models, and their detail is great. Of course, there are some metal models I have no desire to ever get due to the difficulties I've heard about in assembling them (like the infamous Penitent Engine).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

I thought I might aswell post a picture of these bad boys. I only have one squad and an officer, so they serve more a collectors purpose than gaming.

I do love my old Tyranid models from when I first started collecting them. The xenomorph Hive Tyrant has to be one of my favorite models of all time

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?

If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

That Hive Tyrant is ace. The thing that always stuck in my head about the old tyranid models is the screamer killer as well, such a memorable model.

Ooh, if we're doing that specific farseer, I'll chuck mine in too! I really should get around to painting a few more of my space elves sometime...

I love my old clunky, poorly-weighted St. Celestine too. Looking back, she's not so great, but it was the first mini I painted that I finished and was really impressed with my work. I think I got that model as like, my 2nd Games Workshop purchase, after grabbing a box of marines and the templar upgrade sprues.
The new plastic Celestine is tempting, but as someone who missed out on the age of metal almost completely, there's a real charm to the older sculpts.

The fact that the Avatar is from 2nd makes me sad. Such a badass character with such a poor model (for the modern range).

I had the metal Calgar. It saddens me to know that when they went resin they chopped the banner pole of the metal model for display purposes (you can see the dust on the backpack and where it was touched up)

Or is that because the resin cast was terrible and metal is superior

What?! Crazy talk. The 2nd Ed Eldar Avatar is incredible, still. I really don't like the Forge World one, actually.

By itself it's a cool model and I'd happily use it. But it's just so small compared to so many things now.

Yep, the Avatar is 1993 I believe - so gettin' on there pretty well. I do agree it's a superb model.

The sad thing for me, is that the Avatar used to be pretty potent - on par with Chaos Greater Daemons. However, since then he's become progressively smaller/weaker/worse by comparison and isn't terribly good now. By dint of having a model which is now less than half the size of a typical Greater Daemon kit. So it's being penalized...because they won't provide a new model. A bit sad.

The Ork and Tyranid models are from 1st edition. although they weren't replaced all through 2nd edition, so I suppose they count.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, I remember the original Avatar being hyped as one of the biggest models GW made, in 1990 - it's about 2" tall to the top of its topknot.

I have a Dakka gallery with a bunch of old RT era minis in it.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-132-21855_Oop.html

This guy is one of my favorites. An IG guardsman that was released for maybe only one year or so.

I've got a giant soft spot for Realms of Chaos era minis and worked on painting a few in the last year.
