Subject: Dune board and miniatures game coming from Gale Force Nine
Not quite. Part one ended with them having already been taken in by Stilgar's tribe and Paul putting out his call to the naibs for warriors to become the Fedaykin, and opens part two with them being trained and Jessica undergoing the spice agony to become a Reverend Mother.
Honestly they could pretty much just remake the Sci-Fi Channel series with a bigger budget and maybe a slightly less "a theatre play on camera" format(though I actually quite liked that), and that'd do me fine.

The David Lynch movie is still a visual masterpiece to me. The set/costume design is all amazing. And that Cast! I understand it's not accurate to the books, and most of the book fans dislike it for that reason. Still, as someone who hasn't read the books, it's a pretty great movie.
I also watched the Sci-Fi series, which people claimed was much truer to the books. While I found a lot of stuff interesting in it, it felt REALLY boring to me. Maybe it's like LotR where the books are pretty slow, but the movies get alot of 'punch-up', to make them more watchable?
If this new movie can get the visuals AND the story right, it'll be great!
As for the game, we're all expecting some sort of tabletop strategy game like warhammer, or Darklands. But I'm guessing there will probably be one where you play as one of they houses, and try to get as much spice as you can before the other players. Fighting off troops, and worms, and Fremmies! Which... does sound like a fun game!

The TV mini-series was 3 parts. Part one ended with Paul and Jessica flying into a sandstorm after escaping the Harkonnen.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

On topic, I love the Dune universe, including the later material added by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. So I'm looking forward to hearing more about this miniatures game.

The version I saw was two parts, with two "Dune...Arrakis...blah blah blah" intro segments by Irulan, it was the Children of Dune miniseries that was a three-parter.

I suspect the extended edition would be the three-parter, Yodhrin. I expect the EE version would be the one most people see if they were to look it up today.

That's more room for some new material to help ease audiences into that world. But again, I really don't think it'll be an issue. They'll probably have some hard cuts to make even with two films.
Oh, yes, I'm sure they can fill the running time. I'm just wondering if there's enough to make the first part feel like a complete film if it ends there, rather than just episode 1 with a cliffhanger, that's all.

GF9 better watch themselves doing anything set in the Dune Universe, They'll be subject to a Legal action from GW. Let's be honest, despite creating weapons like Lasguns decades after Frank wrote the Dune series, they will 'own' the terminolgy. GW didn't steal the material 'Plasteel' from the Dune books neither. Nor did the 'Thousand Sons' come from Chapterhouse Dune, and their connection to 9, none of that background came from Frank Herbert, no sirreee!
Seriously, I have high hopes for this. Can you imagine an 6 or 8mm tabletop game set in the Dune universe? Fremen = Stealth, Atredies = Air Power, Harkonen = Armour, Corino = Brutal......... There's so much to go at here with so many houses having their own unique styles of combat and weaponry. Not to mention the Bene Gesserit, the Guild, CHAOM the list could go on. Can't wait to see more and learn about what they are proposing to do.
A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

I have read the books, and the Lynch version looks beautiful; I love it when they bring in the Navigator.
It's not the book - it's actually *better* than the books. The "fans" have unrealistic and unfilmable expectations of something in made up in their imaginations.
WRT the game, I remember playing the old Dune boardgame back in the late 80s

Branding the fans as unrealistic rabblers because many don't care for the liberties Lynch's Pretentionfest 1984 took with the source material(among other things) is slightly undermined by the fact most of them look quite favourably on the SF miniseries, which was quite obviously filmable given it exists and moreover was filmed on a budget only slightly larger than an office tea-kitty.
I know this is something Lynch fans struggle with, but some of us do look for more in a film than pretty visuals and vacant surrealism.

Lynch had the spiritualism and sense of alien worlds and cultures enbodied. Sci-Fi channel had the overarching plot way better (and none of that raining crap). They also nailed the Baron perfectly I might add. The miniseries failed at the end with that 'dont fight for me because I'm your Messiah; Fight for your Duke" BS. When I heard that I went, "Did you all even understand the book?".
No one gets the political side well. I'd love to see an almost sci-fi political thriller take on it for the new movie myself.

What seems strange is that these properties that 40K is derived from - Dune, Star Wars, etc. are only now getting tabletop versions and will likely never eclipse 40K.
Personally, I’ve never read the books, but have enjoyed the Lynch movie and SciFi movie/series. Curious to see if this will have it’s own visual style or will take elements from either of the older properties. Sounds like this will be tied to the new movie, but I’m wondering if it may borrow some visuals from prior series.
It never ends well

Slight bit of news: got an email from Modiphius today announcing they're partnering with GF9 to make the Dune RPG.

The Lynch film is it's own thing and in some ways is superior to the book. The book was very good, but like LOTR it came out at the right time and hit the right zeitgeist to become a classic despite the fact that it's not really as revolutionary or well written as the fans claim. I'd definitely recommend reading it; it might even improve the experience of you keep Lynch's visual style in mind. Without it, there's really not much to distinguish the setting from something like Foundation, besides the characters and intrigue.
As for the game, I'd love to see what plastics they bring to the tabletop.

Star Wars has had tabletop stuff since 1991. West End Games had the license back then, and released some miniatures combat rules in that year to go along with the miniatures that they'd already been selling for their RPG. And when WotC got the license, they produced a collectible miniatures game for the setting that ran I think right up until they gave up the license.

I just finally joined to ask “How come nobody is mentioning the best Dune that never was?”
Jodorowsky’s Dune...it would have been epic.
The documentary is available on Amazon. We never really got his version (except for Metabarons) but he did indirectly give us Alien, Blade Runner, and a host of other movies. I recommend it. Not putting a link since I’m new and Google is a thing.
Also, sign me up for anything Harkonnen.
