Some really awesome stuff in here, keep it up!

Who'd have thought adding bondage chains and a whip to the 6-boobed naked demon giant would make it look *less* like a sex toy and more like it actually fits into a warzone =/

Nice to see some Imperial stuff too, you've not completely fallen to Chaos!

Spasibo bolshoye, thanks a lot, ta muchly.

FWIW, both the Imperial minis were built way back when I lived in Leicester and I was a confused young undergrad yet to accept that Chaos is the only true answer.

I am still trying to figure out the question, however.

Right?

I do love the Zarakynel mini but she is quite plain as far as thirty-foot tall, six-titted monstrosities go.

Thanks for chiming in; as a true devotee of Slaanesh I subsist almost entirely on attention.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been accused of "phoning it in" regarding the chainwork on her chest, which apparently is a delightfully colonial phrase that means I half-arsed it, so for avoidance of doubt

Ironically, this one bit of chain is the most effort I have ever expended on a single part of a mini. I realize it doesn't look like much, but I spent literally hours draping chain all over Her, dropping it and swearing. The chain goes down from the back-ring, under the lower claw arm, around Her chest, under the upper whip arm, back over Her shoulder, then under the chains wrapping Her chest, then back up under the upper whip arm through the back-ring to cinch the wrap tight and then down to the rock. There's no glue on Her chest; only tension is keeping the chain in place.

So [Expletive Deleted] off.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone out there know if the bald female Arcadian heads fit into the empty Cadian helmets without too much work?

The weather and lighting in my locale are wholly unsuitable so there is no painting progress and my green stuff apparently won't be here until at least the 24th, so there's no progress on gap-filling either. So why am I posting? Well, because although the concept for this thing is many years old, Sasha Aleksandrovna, Herald of Slaanesh, was completed on October 15, 2017, therefore today is the first birthday of this current incarnation of the sad story of Kronstaat IV and I thought that warranted something.

Because this last weekend was an international break I was denied the big, berry-brown face of the One True Gary, Blessed Be His Toe-Poke, so I largely occupied myself by re-reading The Siege of Vraks books. Vraks is, without doubt, my favourite 'event' in the 40k universe and I don't think it is at all hidden that said books are a huge influence on what happens here. If I had been a richer man, you'd be looking at Renegade DKoK with sci-fi ushanka heads.

So I can't give you new models and I can't give you updates to old models, but I can give you another history lecture, an introduction to my "mad" Paint/GIMP "skillz" and an insight into how I spend my weekends.

+++The following excerpt is reproduced, without permission, from The Inquisitor's Guide to the Galaxy, 3rd Ordo Malleus Ed., revised+++

The Kronstaat system is located to the Galactic east of Agripinaa and to the Galactic west of Fenris, on the main Cadia-Terra/Mars supply route and relatively close to the Eye of Terror itself. Despite this location, the system has been spared much of the ravages of the region and has endured without major attack for almost three thousand Terran years now. Because of this location – and the abundant mineral resources under the systems's planets – it forms a minor, but vital, part of the gargantuan apparatus designed to feed the Cadian Gate.

It is composed of six planets, numbered 1-6 rather than named. Only K4 and K5 possess breathable atmospheres, though weather patterns on K5 render the planet surface inhospitable in extremis, Imperial presence on K1, K2, K3 and K6 is limited to a single mining facility with a Defence Force garrison on each. K5, known locally as 'Lubyanka' [dead link], is currently designated a prison planet. Latest records show a population of ca. 450m resident inmates.

K4 is a similar size to Terra and has a current population of some 60bn living across four habitable continents, known locally as 'oblasts'. To the north and south are frozen poles where temperatures in mid-summer struggle to rise above -50c. All four oblasts lie separated by small seas, except Krim and Volga Oblasts, which are separated by the 12,000km wide K4/C-137, known locally as Ladoga Ocean.

All four habitable oblasts are covered, to an extent between 96 and 99%, by high, steep mountain ranges which cannot support intensive housing schemes, accordingly the population is low compared to other planets of comparable size and mineral wealth and the population concentrated in a few centres. Ten [?] cities currently exist on K4, all are principally concerned with refining mineral ore in some capacity. Excepting Kirch, Oradour and Oryel, all of the cities and both the Korova and Konev Facilities possess star-ports.

Map of K4

Transit between population centres is achieved by means of light rail and road networks in thin ribbons between the harsh terrain. Most transit between oblasts still takes place via water, surprisingly, though flight is also readily available and in use amongst the planet's elite and intelligentsia.

K4 is exempt from Astra Militarum planetary tithes owing to its largescale production of essential raw materials, but is required to maintain a standing Planetary Defence Force. Despite being known as the K4 Defence Force, they are actually tasked with maintaining the security of all the system's planets. At any one time approximately 25% of the planet's population is enlisted, and over half are based in garrisons in and around Kotlin. Organizationally, they are best described as 'unorthodox';

- 100 troopers, or 'soldats' as they are known locally, comprises a Battalion and is led by a 'KomBat' (Komandir Batalona, in the local language) of rank roughly equivalent to a Captain;
- 20 Battalions makes a Company ('Roty'), led by a 'KomRot' (Komandir Roty - Colonel);
- 10 Companys make a Brigade, led by a 'KomBrig' (Komandir Brigada - Brigadier);
- 15 Brigades make a Regiment ('Polk'), led by a 'KomPol' (Komandir Polkovoy - Major General);
- 15 Regiments make a Corps, led by a 'KomKor' (Lieutenant-General);
- 20 Corps makes an Army, led by a 'KomArm' (General).

They are equipped and armed by freighters en route to Cadia and therefore bear a striking resemblance to the famed Cadian 'Shock Troops'.

Each population centre, maintains at least one Adeptus Arbites garrison. The presence of the Ecclesiarchy is negligible. Locally, rumours persist that the Korova Facility, founded by His Holiness Archbishop 'Len' Brennan in M36, is an Adepta Sororitas training camp, but there is no truth to this at all. The Korova, in fact, is no longer an Ecclesiarchy property, being transferred to [redacted] in [redacted] owing to [redacted].

Notwithstanding that the system has not faced major attack in recorded history, Kronstaat remains a vital link in fundamental Galactic defenses and supply chains and its loss would have severe 'knock-on' effects for Cadia and other vital Imperial interests. Therefore each population centre and mining facility on each of the system's six planets possesses several Planetary Defence batteries and each is perfectly capable of fending off a medium-sized fleet without aid.

As a result of the strong defenses, large Defence Force, numerous extra-planetary probes and proximity to Fenris the security status of the system is – low; least concern.

I don't know if you've noticed, but I have a bit of a tendency to drone on and on and on and on if left unchecked so I also have strict word limits for these things to rein in my pretentiousness and self-absorption.

I have a few ideas for those two facilities on October Oblast, ranging from re-education centres to secret Ordo Malleus/Xenos R&D facilities. Maybe Here be Necrons. I do like the image of millions of Necron Warriors marching implacably out of the seas. Maybe I'll rip off The Anphelion Project as well as ...Vraks.

But... I haven't decided yet.

So all fifteen totally-not-Cadian Renegades are painted and based, but I've left it too late to photograph them today and you'll have to wait until tomorrow for them and more execrable fluff.

For now, terrain WIPs;

Summoning Circles

They're not painted; the larger rocks I use in my basing scheme just happen to be red.

Statue Garden

The only real difference here is that I've removed every other toothpick compared to the last photo, 'cause I think it looked cluttered.

I've moved all my images into galleries, do they still display?

Yes they Display.
I'd probably cut the picks in half they seem too longish kinda.
Also i see a distinct lack of barbed wire and trenches, you can't have a r&h army without trenches!

Thanks for your comments. Barbed wire is in progress, just not worth showing yet.

I'm torn on trenches. I do want them because this is essentially the 'Eastern' Front in spaaaaaace but I also want my board to be modular and the more fixed stuff you put on it the more likely it is for things to be misaligned (especially so since my process is basically 'wing it') or become stale and boring.

On the other hand, I don't want them because I like the imagery of fighting building to building, a la Stalingrad.

A possible solution is to make six 2'x2' foam tiles as my main board and then another three 2'x2' tiles that feature a trench-line that can be swapped in as needed. The pro of this is that this 'soup' is now planned to top out at 10k (maybe 12 if I get silly and buy a Warhound) so I'll need a board roughly 10'x4' to play a 10/12k game on anyway. The big con is of course that storage starts to become an issue. This solution also means that the trench-lines will have to begin and end on the 'south' edge of those three tiles, rather than running more or less straight east-west. Still, 6' of trench is a lot to work with. The lip of the trench also couldn't be further than 12" away from the 'south' edge, or nobody could deploy in it.

I personally plan for my trenches to be on a small wood piece. Basically a foxhole morsoe then a trench.

Ayuh, I can see how that would work. If I do it, I'll use foam and dig down. Ditto for craters. I really hate looking at an otherwise beautiful board where the bottom of the craters are actually sitting at street-level.

Just catching up on this thread as I've been away for the past few days, you've got some great world building going on and the summoning circles look top notch! They remind me a bit of the Dawn of War summoning buildings. Might be the spikes.
The chains around Zarakynel look solid too, well done.

Voyna Narodnaya; Once Upon A Beginning

Petrov's Defence - Part I.

It started, as these things often do, innocently enough on 616.808M41. A young man, known to be fond of the zydrate, had been walking back to his hab-block one evening when, upon navigating a particularly troublesome corner, he had lost all balance and stumbled face-first into a passing hover-freight travelling well in excess of the posted limits.

He died, of course. It was a terrible shame, of course. Nothing was done, of course. No family could be found and so off he went into a mass grave. A few former colleagues raised a fuss at the shoddy treatment of a fellow worker, nobody was interested. A few more former colleagues raised a bigger fuss and before anyone knew it supervisors were put against the wall and Oddyssa, a city of 500m, was alight.

The Arbites waded in, achieving significant early gains and pushing the workers back into the industrial maze of Oddyssa's central district. The Honourable Justice Rodion Ivanovich Petrov, in overall command of Arbite forces in the district, elected to lay seige to the workers. As an example to others considering challenging the Arbites, they would be starved.

It is not entirely clear what happened inside the seige-lines but what is clear is that on the morning of the sixth day a horde of workers attacked the western flank of Petrov's Arbites and broke out, screaming unintelligible gibberish. They quickly circled back and attacked neighbouring Arbite forces from the rear. In the confusion, more workers poured through the breach. With his line collapsing, Petrov committed his reserves, but they were too few to stem the tide. The horde simply over-ran them. He called for reinforcements. None were available and the Defence Force were a day away, at least, and couldn't be spared in any event. Desperate, Petrov threw in everything he had. Fighting swirled inconclusively for three days with no clear front-line before the workers prevailed and turned their sights on the star-port. Petrov was captured and hanged.

Oddyssa's star-port was under-strength and garrisoned only by the 62nd Independent Coastal Army. For days the soldats had faced the prospect of turning their weapons on fellow workers, possibly people they knew or family members even. Indeed, initially some units did refuse to fire – and were appropriately censured – but the sheer violence of the worker's attack meant that for most soldats self-preservation was a more pressing concern than ethics. For six days the rabble assaulted the star-port, for six days the star-port was held. A message was received, forces were being mobilised to reinforce the 62nd Coastal. Then on the evening of the seventh day, another message was received; reinforcements had been diverted and the 62nd Coastal was ordered to withdraw. There were more pressing concerns and they were needed elsewhere.

The city of Oddyssa was to be sacrificed.

Panic in the Streets of Kotlin- Part II.

News of the insurrection was tightly controlled, but word got out that Imperial agents were persecuting Oddyssa's workers regardless. Solidarity protests were attempted in all of Kronstaat IV's major cities and facilities and all were crushed with extreme prejudice. All except in Cebastopol. In Cebastopol, the seat of Imperial power in the west, the workers fell upon the Arbites and the Defence Force with a ferocity and frenzy that scarcely seemed human. Within a week almost two-thirds of the entire workforce of the city, some 850m people and abhumans, were mobilized against the Imperial regime. For two weeks the entire Arbites garrison and six entire Defence Force armies were pushed back inexorably to the harbour and Cebastopol's star-port. Within three weeks the Arbites were no more and the Defence Force's 3rd, 34th, 42nd, 55th, 8th Independent Coastal and 16th Independent Coastal Armies were pinned down at the star-port.

It has been argued in the years since that six professional Armies, still close to full-strength, dug-in to strong, prepared, defensive positions should easily be expected to hold out against civilian rabble armed mostly with cutting lazers and bits of pipe. The argument has its merits, but it ignores that those six armies had previously been expected to easily hold the line and yet had been relentlessly driven back by that civilian rabble into a small, admittedly defensively-ideal, pocket. It also ignores that stemming the flow of Heretics was not good enough, nothing less than annihilation would do. Whatever the reasoning, STAFFKA sent orders from Kotlin; they had decided that Cebastopol and Krim Oblast were more strategically important than Oddyssa and Kirov Oblast were and that six armies were not, in fact, enough. Kirov Oblast could be retaken later.

The fall of Cebastopol simply could not be countenanced.

Rodina - Part III.

Somebody had to hold the line while the rest of the 62nd Coastal were re-deployed. Somebody had to make the harbour and star-port unusable after they had gone. Many had volunteered, few had been chosen. She used to work with explosives in the mine, so she had been one of them.

The noise here was unbearable now. At least she wouldn't have to listen to it for much longer. She wrapped the last wire, stood up and sent the mission-complete code. They were the last. They had nearly been too late.

She looked at her squad, looked at the gate, raised her lasgun. They followed suit. The screams from outside were unimportant; the incessant babbling of the rabble just vibrations in air. She looked at the panel as the gate gave and the horde flooded through. 00.33.4. They had done it. Oddyssa would rise again and Cebastopol would be saved.

She smiled as she fired. It was a good day to die.

So I said I'd post these on sunday, but lighting, employment and dogs being adopted have prevented me from taking pics until today.

These guys are not 'done' done, but they are done until I avail myself of a way to print decals. For whatever reason, I thought the Cadian decal sheet had stars on it that I oculd paint red, but it doesn't. So they need Krasnaya Zvezda decals and then they'll be weathered up a bit.

Looking good so far! I reckon the red stars will make them pop and tie them together.
Quick question, with your models so dark in colour, why is the flag such a bright yellow? Will you be keeping it that way or toning it down later?

I wanted to go for typically Soviet colours for the banner, but honestly I hated painting it and I hate how it looks so I'll be removing it and giving him a Grenade Launcher, I think. That was my second go at it and I just sort of forced myself through it and I think that shows honestly. Maybe I'll print an actual Soviet Front banner and use that instead. Haven't quite decided.

I was introduced to 'Allied Stars' stencils yesterday, by Howie, and I ordered a set so the red stars will be along shorty. $20 USD for a stencil seems kinda expensive but it's going to save me having to print, cut out and set ca. 300 decals, so it'll be well worth it I reckon.

Thank you. It's Army Painter Corpse Pale with a thinned Druchii Violet wash. They're slowly falling to corruption and may one day also be part of a Genestealer Cult so the pallid look was what I was going for.

I use Druchii Violet like Frank's Hot Sauce; I put that [Expletive Deleted] on everything.

So, Slavic tiddly-peeps out there, if I got a Valkyrie Air-Wing Detachment and called it 'Небо Славян' (Nebo Slavyan/The Sky of Slavs), would you be offended or would you recognize it for the Alisa reference that it is?

For your consideration, nationalist Russian pop-metal sung by Richard Hammond's creepy uncle;

Thanks, spasibo, danke.

All my PDF vehicles will be the same light grey as my Militsiya with the darker grey I use on the basing as camo stripes, much like you have with the tan/brown on yours.

Reinforcements are inbound; 25 further soldats (two more Militia squads, 3 Malefic Lords, 2 totally-not-NKVD Enforcers), 2 (4) Heavy Weapons Teams and two Leman Russ are in Canada Post's clumsy hands. May Slaanesh Protect Them.

I'll also have two of the SC! Commissars going spare, if anyone wants them. Well, most of them anyway. I'll be using their hats and one head. The Kronstaat IV People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs has no further use for Steve the Pirate cosplay.

I'd prefer not to mail internationally 'cause I have to spend ca. $8k on exams in the next six months and I'm kinda broke.

Alrighty. Per Soviet Storm: WWII in the East, the Red Army introduced T-34 engineer tanks during Bagration featuring large rollers affixed to the front of each tank to clear minefields.

Vot tak.

I'd like to replicate that on my Leman Russ so today's question is does anybody know of a fairly quick and easy bit or series of bits that would allow me to do so? My current plan involves using the 'arms' from the deff-rolla and scratch-building the roller itself, but I'm lazy and will eventually have six Leman Russ so I'd prefer to do less work.

Thanks to minigiant for finding this and thanks to 3DPrintedDebris for producing it.

https://www.3dprinteddebris.com/listing/626790699/large-rodina-volgograd-the-motherland

I cannot recommend this company enough. I had some extremely noobish, naive questions and they happily walked me through everything.

I've got 2x 48x96" .5" Foamular boards ($8.24 each at Home Depot) to make the fake Mamayev Kurgan (Mamayev Kur-Ben, now) plinth she stands on, which will mean that the tip of her sword will be 15.5" from the tabletop. Zarakynel/The Violet Heart is 6.5" tall, for reference.

Behold, more of my mad image-manipulation skills. Each square is .5". Green is Guardsmen, pink Daemonettes, purple Herself. Yellow is The Motherland Calls, natch. Orange meets grey at table-level. There'll be a statue on each corner which will probably have Space Wolves on them. The whole thing is 24x24" and will be the first (and most expensive) tile of my ruined city board.

Bet you're excited to get your hands on that!

I saw on the painting competition thread your paintjob was ruined on Zarakynel? Any update on her?

It is impossible to overstate how much I am 'geeking out' over getting my hands on The Motherland Calls!. I had a pretty promising date on saturday and utterly blew it by talking about Mamayev Kurgan and Stalingrad all night.

So yeah, Zarakynel/The Violet Heart and I aren't really speaking at the moment. She was primed for about a week without problem, but after I painted Her the paint sort of bubbled away from the mini, like it had melted or something. Seems likely I didn't clean Her properly and it's mold release related. So She went for another bath and then all the spikes and chains fell off, so... I don't know when we'll see Her again.

Thanks for saying so.

It means a lot for my motivation to have people comment, especially people who consistently produce great work themselves such as yourself and Tyranid Horde.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sadly, the real-life Sasha Aleksandrovna - an eight year old Greater Daemon of Weimeraner - got sick and required the ministrations of the Ordo Veterinarianus, so I had to cancel my GW order to cover that cost which means that my focus this month is shifting to finishing off my two remaining Chariots, the three Daemon terrain pieces, the barricades and my centerpiece for a board that does not yet exist/next year's AoP entry, Mamayev KurBen.

Doing some rough maths reveals that I'll end up with nine 2'x2' tiles for my board allowing for some to be swapped in and out for regular 6x4 games so I've decided to devote two of them to replicating, in a 40k way, part of the Lake Ontario shore-line of Hamilton, ON. Specifically, the Dofasco steelworks

Which, as the wanky photography might suggest, I'm rather fond of aesthetically and I can spin some sort of tribute to the worker out of it, too. Importantly, it allows me to plaster Socialist Realism agitprop romanticizing the worker all over the place.

Which is nice.

To clarify though, the ruined city board is going to be a extremely slow-burner. As things currently stand, there is not a single room in my apartment I could set up even a 6x4 board in.

EDIT - I should add, another synthetic feather to 3DPrintedDebris' metaphorical cap is that I got a notification at 9 a.m. on monday morning telling me that The Motherland Calls! had shipped. From California. Where it was 6 a.m.

Cannot recommend them enough. Go buy stuff.

Hey man, chase up your date again, maybe she enjoyed it!

It's a real shame about Zarkynel, don't let it get to you too much, you've kept a log of what you've done with her here so you can get back on track in no time!

Hope your Weimeranar gets well soon also! Looking forward to the next update.

I spoke to her again on Sunday. Actual quote;

"I don't understand why you'd spend so much time learning a language only to say so many boring things."

So, yeah. Onwards and upwards. Sasha Aleksandrovna is perfectly well now, thanks for your concern.

I'm having something of a BoJack day, called in sick to work which was probably a mistake in hindsight. Going to have to power through the Chariots today and hope mindfulness beats black dog.

Savage. Bojack will cure all, though I always end up with a glass of scotch in my hand after watching the credits a few times, not sure why. Good luck with your day off, hope you use it wisely.

Malefic 'Lords' v.2

They're still just concept minis at this point and I've been using cheap superglue so I can pull bits off again if I don't like them, which is why they both look like they've been fumed for fingerprints.
