I was a hardcore powergaming tournament player from 3rd through 5th. I used to travel to all of the grand tournaments or indy grand tournaments, and it was a big deal to me to place high.

My last tournament was in 2007 or so.

All of that burnt me out pretty bad and since then I am purely a narrative casual player.

Assuming you are able to operate a computer, you could use Tabletop Simulator software to play virtual 40K?

Just a suggestion. I've been meaning to give it a try (except it might just be the death-knell for my IRL hobby and that would be a shame).

I'm more of a painter/modeler than a player, but when I play its to the rules but with scenarios designed for ease of play/multiple people as several members of my gaming club are new to 8th so I'm helping them (and me!) learn.

Id rather this with decently painted and based models to oceans of grey plastic but hyper competitive. So I reckon I'm around a 3/8, as I'm pretty chill but I am a stickler for Wysiwyg (unless the proxy is decent or its a one off to try stuff before buying.)

The hobby has given me so much the last 20 years. I have never been very competitive in the gaming part of the hobby, but I really love the aspect of building an army, painting a unit and putting the finished models into the cabinet.

Well I'm glad to see people are voting!

As I suspected we are a 'mildly serious' bunch.

Modelling - 3 or so. I want them on the tabletop as soon as possible, but as complete as possible--with some personal preference exceptions.

Painting - 0. I cannot stand it. I've tried countless times, and each time I end up getting so completely down about the entire thing that I pack it in. I get no enjoyment from it, the "reward" of seeing painted models doesn't come close to being worth it for me, and I've no interest at all in that aspect. Complete and utter waste of my time and energy.

Playing - 4. I'm in the hobby to play. Modelling is a necessary step, painting can take a running jump off the edge of a cliff, but I'm not all too serious about playing. Because I loathe painting with all the intensity of 1,000 exploding suns, I don't enter tournaments or anywhere that requires it/penalises you for not painting, so I've never had a real competitive mindset, but I do like to win if at all possible.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I love playing miniature wargames & building/painting models of almost any genre. This includes 40k. So an 8.

The rest of that list? Eh. Somewhere about a 4-5.
Except for competiveness. That's a 1. If I'm actively playing a game I'll know the rules and, no matter what force I've built, win my fair share of games. But I'm not interested in your tourney scene or building whatever the group-think has decided is the best list, avoiding x model/unit because pts/bad stats/, etc. Wether or not I win is incidental.

I voted 7/8

My only tattoo is the Crimson Fists command symbol from the Index Astartes article that ran in White Dwarf back in the mid 2000's. So pretty damn serious. However, if it came down to it, I'd always take a game of WFB over 40K if forced to choose.

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

You should define 1 and 8...

I wouldn't call myself "serious" about any aspect of 40K, but looking at how you defined it in your intro I am going with it!

I will not put unpainted models on the table, and I rarely proxy. My Dark Angels are painted as Dark Angels and I would never think of playing them as something else. My painting would not win any prizes, but I spend time doing it and look for ways to improve. I enjoy building the models but I do very few conversions. I still want my models to come together properly and I enjoy the process of building plastic kits!

I play regularily at home and at the FLGS. I equally enjoy playing family and friends in "narrative" play and going to local tournaments/open competitive gaming. I put a lot of thought into my tournament lists but I keep my lists "pure" with a little bit of fluff going on and I have no illusions about winning the whole thing. I want to do well (win more than I lose) but I would rather lose a game than an opponent.
