Reposting from my blog, but as the focus is the guy I’m painting for this, dropping here for additional input.

Questions for the crowd: Paint schemes.

Next month (aka tomorrow) I’m going to start in on these guys:

I want them to fit in to my modern undead scheme. The primary colors are bone, black, dark-steel, red, with blue for ghost effects.

Examples of stuff painted this decade:
Spoiler:

How much do I want to make these guys (as heroes/HQs) stand out? The guy on the horse is easy, the other two might just blend in with the rank and file nighthaunts.

Speaking of which, lets step back a bit.

For all the normal spooks, I’m planning black-washed steel for armor and weapons, black robes which are going to be tapered to blue wisps. Fairly similar to the studio army, but probably not taking it as far to white on the etherial effects.

Mr. Padlock I was thinking of going red. Basically he’s be done the same way I did Manfred’s cape. Iron armor, but bronze locks/keys.
Mr. Lantern would get the same treatment. One thing I was thinking about for him would be to do the smoke from the lantern in an etherial green, to help him stand out.
Now the Dark Knight gets a few different treatments. The horse has strips of skin that are ghosting off. So that’s black horse to blue ghost transition (like what I’m planning for the rank & file) Horse bone gets my normal bone treatment. The rider defiantly gets the red to blue cloak treatment. His skin gets the blue. This should tie in nicely as a inverted scheme from the hexwraiths (who are black riders on red clad horses)

I guess my main question is wether or not to go red/black on the “foot” HQs. Do their accouterments stand out on their own to distinguish them from the R&F? If I go green flame on the lantern, that will make him stick out. Lock guy might blend a bit, but he’s got distinctive gear.

Thoughts? Not just on them but on the rider as well.

Thanks
--Nev

I think your plan sounds fine, lantern and padlock should pull them out from the ranks enough.

We already have bat-ork and bat-marine, so I was looking at doing a little bat-grot vignette, and was going through various old snotlings and gobbos to see what could work as what, when I had a better thought.

There should be a Two-face and a Penquin joining Mr J, and I have a plan for a Robin too. All in a tiny rotten version of Gorham. Maybe with a little bat-kart too.

Going to be a bit of a late entry if you don't mind,
I was going to go with Zombicides King Arthur originally but I just didn't fancy doing the model and then Theophony started on his set. Well this morning I'd just finished a model and was deciding what to begin next and picked out this guy.

Originally I was going to do him as a bright shiny knight but then I stopped and thought. I realised that the Knightly order closest to Batman was the grim dour miss trusted Black Guard of Morr.

WIP probably going to go blacker on the armour.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Had a bit of a disaster with my entry, got the mini but it was cast in a horribly brittle resin that didn't fit together at all well, broke on me several times and was basically a nightmare (Knightmare?) to work with...

So time for plan B, which is to take the mini and paint it as a broken down, ancient statue rather than an actual person, giving me a neat excuse for the damage and a chance to experiment a little... onwards and upwards!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

After months of inaction, I may well have some time and inspiration t do something - although no promises...

I did make a start of sorts - classic WFB skeleton, think he should fit the theme given the Halloween deadline?

Note he is headless, but will not stay as such... There's also a hint included of what I'm planning for him...

Woops, forgot I needed to post some WIPs over here.

The lantern guy was my testbed. He’s more-or-less what I’m aiming for. At this point I’ve started blocking in colors on the other two.

This is from this morning. I put a brown wash on the golds/bronzes/bone after the pic was taken. Still have a number of inks and washes to go, plus a bit of touchups and highlights. And the base. Plugging right along. Would have got more done this weekend, but I built a pair of dreadnoughts instead.

Great work all around guys Nevelon, how did you like working with that glowey paint? I assume you used the new GW paint to get that blue, if not even more kudos to you.

Bat knight is basically done, but after watching the latest season of Gotham on Netflix I got an idea which will hopefully get done in time. Still more python knights to finish, but my Bushido stuff showed up and I’m enjoying getting them painted up as well .

Focus has never been my strength.

Did it with old paints (cote d’arms hex pot era) . But it’s not hard.

Prime white.
Basecoat with Elf Grey (very pale blueish/grey tinted white)
Hit it with a Turquoise Glaze (no idea about a modern equivalent)
Drybrush the Elf Grey back on.
Done

Some of the blending was done with some stippling and/or washes and inks. Really played fast and loose, as I wanted a more organic feel to the transitions. I figured if I monkeyed with it too much, I’d just screw things up.

Here they are Sir Wayne and Robin. Oddly my Halfling Robin is a bit more serious than most interpretations...

Sir Wayne of Gotham has been obsessed with the worship of Morr since watching his parents die in front of him as a young boy. Dour and distrusted he often prowls the dark treacherous streets of Waldenhof in an elusive cat and mouse game with the counts men. He's joined forces with the halfling thief Robin Greyson since a raid struck his home and slaughtered his family both are seeking revenge. Waldenhof is no city for those who seek justice........

Great work Lamahead , I wish I had a squire to go with my Bat Knight.... , I guess the bad guy isn’t the one with the sidekick this time around.

Somehow my name didn’t get entered on page 1, but I figured I better get my pic soon up because I never meet a deadline in competitions. So I give you Bat Knight: Black Plague style.

In the village of Gotham a Plague has fallen upon the population, but no ordinary plague, not even a wrath of an angry God, no this plague was made by man. A court Jester who tried to betray the King and take the crown for himself using foul magics, alchemical skills and forbidden knowledge of the underworld. His plans were spoiled by the loyal family Wayne, but not before the village had been decimated by the poison spread in the water supply that turned the poor of the city into mindless zombies who’s pale skin, darkened eyes and devilish grins showed their corruption. Driven insane by the chemicals the Jester wanders the streets, dancing by the pale moonlight as he and his ravenous pet bunny reek terror among the free citizens of Gotham.

Village outskirts sign desecrated by the lunatic and his pet.

The Jester in his royal reignments

The pet bunny who was pulled from a top hat within the court and devoured the guests and the royal family. All one has to do is look at the bones that are left to see the gnaw marks left by his huge gnashy teeth.

The Bat Knight with his twin axes he climbs sheer walls and drops down on his nemesis, gliding on his unfurled cloak. Some think he is just as mad as the Jester, others think he is seeking vengeance for his lost family but all agree that he is a Knight unafraid of the dark.
