Hobby-wise I enjoy that AoS, like 40k with its different detachments, allows you to focus more on the parts and models you like instead of also having to build an entire supporting army around them. It might be worse for balancing but it makes the collecting funner.

As a game I do prefer Fantasy over AoS but since the latter is what's being played around me at the moment I'll float along to have something to do with my precious models, though I keep them on square bases and magnetize them to rounds and ovals as required.

A couple of friends are playing AoS occasionally, which is why I'm probably taking the plunge.

Reasons: AoS it's cheaper* than 40k, and some of the newer models are just beautiful. 40k has become a convoluted mess with power levels going through the roof. Games are usually over at the end of turn 2, turn 3 at the very latest. But with the amount of units shooting and whatever those 3 turns tend to last a lifetime. I feel I'm enjoying _playing_ 40k less and less every time. I do love the setting and the hobby aspects of 40k though. So I'll probably keep collecting anyway.

From AoS I pretty much want a 40k-lite that is less of a burden to play and still has nice models. Other companies' models just don't have that "GW magic" to them.

*at least I don't know any 40k armies you can get a 1000pts for about 100€.

I actually like how “upbeat” AoS is when compared to 40k. Yes, the forces of evil are on the march, and bad things have happened, but the good guys are fighting back. It feels more like the darkness before the dawn. Also, it’s genuinly new. Everything coming out is at worst a reinvention, at best a completely new faction. It’s a growing setting, while somehow 40k seems to be stagnating something shocking. That’s not me ripping on it though. I’m still into 40k, just not as enthusiastically as AoS.

I don't want to take the easy way out and say 'everything', but right now that is the direction I'm leaning. I like the models, I enjoy the game, and I love the lore. I tried dipping my toe in after the GHB II, but the release of Legions of Nagash and the Malign Portents are what finally got me to take the plunge. I've been playing at least bi-weekly ever since and AoS has supplanted 40K as my primary game.

It also helps that AoS has a great community in my area. Most of the AoS players that I've met are hobby oriented and easy going.

Snake Ladies.
I tried to make an army of snake ladies for Slaanesh 40k for decades. Gathering Diaz Daemonettes became insanely cost prohibitive. Sold them all. Bought a Daughter of Khaine army. Painted most of it in 2 weeks and it looks better than any other I've owned.

1) The aesthetic of AoS really appeals to me. I love the OTT posing and flourish, and some of the outlandish designs (Idoneth Deepkin remain one of the coolest things GW has ever done). The sense of motion in the Nighthaunt is what brought me in full steam with 2.0.

2) I love how well the game scales to smaller points. AoS play like a full game at 1k, while 40k seems larglely incomplete at anything under 1500.

3) I like that the game isn't Herohammer like WHFB was. I routinely rely on my infantry units to take down monsters and heroes. Sure, you have a few Uber characters, but they are usually priced appropriately and can be overwhelmed with equal points infantry.

4) Particularly with 2.0, the fluff has really ramped up. The Nighthaunt has some of the best writing from a GW army book, with the history behind each of the units being incredible and grim to the point that you really saw Nagash in a new light.

Summoning mechanic gives you a good advantage at lower points, at least, if you have it as linear and without any requirements to do so.

At lower points, I also often feel that it comes down to a clash between the two best damage dealing units. It hasn't come up yet, that I'd want to split my army, as much as I want to, to go for the objectives rather than try to survive the attack the opponent is going to do. Looking at other 1000 point battle on YT they sort follow a similar pattern.
