Not entirely certain on what books i would need for it though

The new Pelennor Fields box is pretty perfect if you're not picky about what factions you want to play. You get a good start to two good forces (Rohan and the Dead of Dunharrow) and an evil force (Mordor). You also get the full sized, hardcover rules, some dice, counters and measuring sticks. After that you want the Armies of the Lord of the Rings book, since that would give you profiles for all the factions and units from the LotR books/movies. From there it's your choice. I got some regular Orcs, some Orc Trackers, and heroes like Gothmog, Shagrat, Gorbag, and the Morannon Orc command pack for my Mordor force.

Thanks! The exact book i needed for the armies was mixing me up for some reason.

I've been going back and forth on the pelennor fields box if only because I don't really like the dead men of dunharrow, but i'll probably still get it.

If I wanted to go with the haradrim as a force, can they work alongside the mordor forces, or are things kept seperate?

Harad and Mordor are green allies.

Painting the Dead in more realistic Blacks and metals works well to use them as Black Numenorians.

I like that idea, i might go with that. It'll be nice to do more research when i actually manage to get ahold of the books

I bought a bunch of Rohan 10 years ago so I'm going to get them fully assembled and painted with the new contrast paints.

More recently I got some Hobbit orcs on foot and wargs, the dwarfs, and the original heroes from the Fellowship. I don't know anything about LotR except the movies but my friends like Tolkien so maybe they'll play with me.

What Rohan heroes should I convert and what are the armed with? I'm not buying any metal minis, all of my stuff will be converted from plastics.

I am down here in Texas and getting back into the game after only having played it a few times when the first trilogy of movies came out.

Turns out there is a fairly healthy group in the Houston area, but pretty much all games in my tiny town are fairly dead.

The new starter box will be perfect for me to learn and teach the game to others while I build a Rivendell army on the side.

Random thought of the day (figure I'd post here):
Does it seem plausible that GW picks up the license to produce miniatures/games based on the future LotR based series? Could cash in on the hype like it did with the movies and would be a reason to extend the life of the whole miniature line (instead of slowly fading, as it happened before).

On topic: I haven't played since the Fellowship of the Ring came out. I always liked the game and the miniatures but am often reluctant to start a new game from zero. Time will tell. Community is super strong here though. Always was, even when it was basically forgotten by the company.

It'd be great, if the original LotR bubble doesn't scare GW from trying it again and they can navigate the legal minefield that the licensing would be (New Line, Tolkien Estate, Amazon).

If it set in the Second Age like the rumors say, then it'd be perfect for a Wars of the Second Age supplement from GW and a real concerted effort at making new plastic miniatures.

That is an excellent question. I just recently found out about the upcoming television show (I know, I live under a rock), and it could be a great opportunity for GW to grow interest in the game, and expand the player base.

While I don't think from a playability standpoint it would change much to have models and characters from what looks to be the setting of the t.v. show (the second age), I do believe they would have to be careful of making sure the eras play together well.

Thinking about it, the legal minefield could be a nightmare. Mostly due to producers being different, so GW would have to convince both NL and Amazon of incorporate representations of their products within a same package, as I don't think GW would go as far as having two separate Tolkien-inspired lines. Maybe that's asking too much. Far from an expert but I think this could be really tough.

Agree that a War of the Second Age Supplement adding all the goodies as an expansion to the already existing stuff would be the way to go. with proper new minis.

Yeah, I guess it would just be adding extra stuff that appears on the show as the current basis of the game should work fine.
Technically, the models of the Last Alliance could already count as Second Age? But mixing the looks from the movies and the tv show could be a challenge for model consistency if they are very different. Though I fear more the licensing issues that could make GW desist the opportunity.

Hehe, good thing I just started collecting a Rivendell army than!

I get the feeling that the overall aesthetics may end up being pretty similar between the show and the movies. I hear rumours that Peter Jackson has been contacted, and even Sir Ian McKellen is likely to make an appearance as Gandalf.

It would probably be too risky for Amazon to change the visuals too much from Jackson's vision of Middle Earth, since that is what people are used to at this point... and that would be a good thing for trying to include miniatures from the show into the game.
