On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Wow.. that's an excellent idea Apologist! Some great stuff on that site.

Might have to have a think what I can do with that kind of theme.

I've been toying for some time about trying to collect a 1st edition Eldar army, partly because they are one of the few ranges that still look great today (arguably better in some cases), but also because it was something I always wanted as a child/teenager but couldn't afford.

 ingtaer wrote:
Its really insane how much some of that stuff can go for, still at least all the text is available cheap.

I've found that, in general, you get two types of seller of retro wargaming goods on eBay. Type one is the seller that has bought the item for cheap, knows it is of value, and is re-selling to make a profit. Usually these are characterised by a raffle-ticket identifier and a high-band buy it now price.
The second type, and the one you need to keep an eye out for is the instance of where a parent is cleaning out an attic, or someone is having a clear-out etc. The better deals here can be found just searching generally within the wargames section (or just under 'warhammer' etc.) for things that haven't been labelled correctly. At times I have got hold of some really rare or old miniatures that are often pictured in a pile, already painted etc, and have used photoshop to zoom in and try and see what the minis are. It's actually quite fun, although can be time consuming.

Obviously with box sets this is less straightforward and the bids can get super-high. But, wargaming bring & buys, or even car boot sales, can be a good place to pick up these.

Well, why not combine the ideas? It'd be fantastic to see a counterpart to the Eldar of WD138:

Great idea for a thread!

I've been working on retro-themed stuff for the past year or so with my Alien Wars project, indulging myself in the bits of 40k I loved when I first got into it.

The theme I've been using for all of it is essentially 'If current model technology was around when Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader was released, what would the armies have looked like?'

So, we've got Thrugg Bullneck's ork raiders:

...A Blood Angels army that's are an affectionate update of the one you posted above, Pacific, from WD139.

...and various aliens, like the Saharduin:

...and squats:

It's proving to be a really enjoyable project, and I've got lots more on the workbench for it

+++

The project is a shared one, so if anyone likes the looks of the Alien Wars, why not join in? There are some great models being produced. Here's a selection from other hobbyists:

This is awesome. Esp the old school eldar paint scheme. I was going to resurrect the old "dazzle" paint schemes for my Imp Guard tanks. Was going to do a Baneblade in old school Iron Desert Dazzle. In fact, if I had to "judge" the tiger stripes eldar paint scheme is awesome actually. Even better than some of the modern eldar schemes i've seen. Using modern paint techniques with old styles can actually produce some awesome results.

For the first time I have not kept up with new editions of the games - an entire edition of each has pretty much passed me by.
So I am sort of becoming a retro gamer by default.

That said, my 40K stuff is mostly sitting idle at the moment. I thought about doing a 2e reboot with modern models but my enthusiasm did not last.
My WFB stuff is getting used in Dungeons and Dragons these days.

What I have started plotting recently is my own set of Heroquest. I don't mean buying it, I mean making my own set from scratch. I found the image of the board online, plan on getting it printed properly and then stuck to a proper folding gameboard, and then printing and making all the cards and tokens, as well as the rules booklets.
The miniatures are pretty easy - Dungeon Saga replicates most of them, and the furniture too. The only ones I am missing are the Fimir and Mummies. Mummies I can get from other sources, but to get the Fimir I am going to have to borrow my school's 3D printer - I found someone had made high quality scans of them online, so I have the printer files to make them. Very excited about that, since Fimir fascinated me as a kid when I was introduced to Heroquest by a neighbour (my first miniatures game!).

The biggest issue I think is the dice, which I am not sure how to approach. Anyone know of a solution of Heroquest dice, or will I have to make them with stickers on ordinary dice, or fill in the pips with putty and then paint the symbols on freehand?!

There's Chessex or dice.co.uk who will make you custom dice (and other companies, I'm sure). dice.co.uk charge, IIRC, 60p per face, so a complete set of six Heroquest dice will cost £21.60. Alternatively, you could get them 3D printed.

As for Fimir, I'd suggest either Fomorians from Brigade Models' Celtos range (not that close a match, but based on the same mythology) or looking for old Citadel fimir on Ebay. You only need a handful, so you might get lucky.

Oh, thank you! I didn't know it was that easy to get custom dice made.

I love the Celtos stuff, but I think I will try for the original fimir for nostalgia reasons. The Celtos Formorians are a great faction though.

I was looking at Blood Moon Miniatures Bog Raiders, but they do not seem to be in production anymore.

Have you considered Krakon Games' Fomorians? Fun sculpts, and very reminiscent of the Fimir. Love the idea of building your own Retroquest – already got me thinking about what I'd need to do to make a Space Crusade equivalent!

Really appreciate the link, I was looking for ages but never turned these guys up!

No worries. Haven’t seen ‘em in person, but I’d anticipate similar to the original fimir (i.e. 40mm base, but not really filling it.)

Definitely interested in this - got a link or a name of what they are called?

EDIT:

Think I got it - the Forge Guard.

Not too bad.

Wonder how they’d scale next to the Apologist Pattern Squats...

That's a great idea, Illumini. Always loved the metal Cadians; rather regret getting rid of the couple of squads I had.

Have you seen Victoria Miniature's Arcadian Guard? They're a great way to expand and add some variety to a metal Cadian force, and they have a couple of heads that are clearly based on the Cityfight Codex.

It just goes to show that a good set of rules is forever. I've played a few games of 'Inquisimunda' using 2nd ed. 40k with only the most minor of tweaks, for example. Going back to a favourite game with new sculpts can really give a great gloss to an old fave.

Any pics of your orking?

Love metal Cadians and all the metal guard. In some ways they lack 40k-ish-ness looking like historials with lasguns but they were so much fun to paint.

I used them as Storm Troopers for my 1000 Maniacs army.

So the design teacher in my school wanted something to 3D print to inspire his students today, and asked me if I had any more miniatures I wanted to get printed. I had found a 3D scan of a Fimir, so I got it printed!
Took about 3 hours.
When he came out, I was a little worried because he had these big support things all around him. They are half off here:

I eventually got it all off, but I had some scary moments when I thought I had damaged the model underneath. At one point, the knife slipped and lopped off the end of the tail, but it glued back on.

(Phone photos, sorry. Will take better ones when I paint it!)
Came out pretty well! Still planning to press on with my Fimir conversions from Savage Orcs, but it is wonderful to have this mini, because I was totally fascinated with them when I was first introduced to Heroquest.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Did anyone else watch the LoTR films over the holidays?

Netflix seemed to be pushing them, so I sat down for an ass-busting 10+ hours to watch all of them - I'd forgotten what good films they were.

Has prompted me to delve deeply (although not as deeply as dwarves) into storage to fish out some of the old figs - found some and those bloody brilliant DeAgostini magazines.
That was such a brilliant idea - I can see why they got so many people into the hobby, I think a lot of people who wouldn't have otherwise, on the back of the films

Now has started me checking out some more LoTR miniatures as well as the new releases!

Those metal Cadians were brilliant - thought much less of the plastic ones that followed, although they were cheaper and of course easier to convert (which I think a lot of people did with them).
