Went with Ciaphus Cane for the emperor this time round, hoping its a good one! Cheers fellas
the Cain books are good fun. they're not as serious as the others but thats a good thing sometimes yoiu just wanna be entertained
I wouldn't say less serious, just less grimdumb. While there is some humour in it you can pretty much say it's a tale of a serial liar attempting to sounds less heroic, more relatable trying to cope with all he had seen with jokes. Cain series has some of the most touching moments in 40K ( IMO) precisely because he avoids numbing the reader with the pointless shock nonsense other 40K books use instead of good writing...
It is quite refreshing actually. It actually reminds me of Blackadder, and being a big fan of the show, that certainly is not a bad thing!

Check out a book series called "the flashman papers" if you like the Ciaphas Cain series BTW, they're the clear inspiration for those books

I have a question separate from but similar to the OP's. I'm nearing the end of Dark Imperium and I own both Plague War and Lords of Silence. Is there any particular order that I should read these two, or does it not matter?

I have not read plague wars, but it seems they are not really connected in plot lines, so you should be safe either way.

As mentioned, take your pick, there’s no order for those two.

IMHO the Ragnar series of books is a good place for space wolves stuff. partiuclarly the very first book, it's one of the best looks at space wolf (hell any space marine) early training we've gotten
