So they are basically X-Wing 1st edition prices? I'm in for a viper and a raider, then. I hope they expand the range or license some other sci fi properties. I'd love to see Starfuries or the Space Above and Beyond fighters.

Thanks for the update. I frankly forgot all about reading the rules that I downloaded a while back. I need to check them out to see if its worth investing the time into learning a new system like this (let alone the money and effort required for convincing someone else later on!).

Minis look really nice/ But, as I expected when I saw the demo at Adepticon, the mechanics seem really clunky. I get that they're going for more of a simulation approach, as opposed to X-Wing's action/arcade style of game but I'm really not sure the extra complexity is adding enough to the game. The movement system in particular looks pretty unwieldy. I know form experience with X-Wing that things can get quite congested once games start, so I would worry about the practicality of having to place these fairly large hexagonal cards on the table for every ship.

The limited factions would also probably push this more towards being more of a standalone, one-and-done sort of game for me, rather than something I'd be interested in expanding over time, but that doesn't seem to be the business model Ares are going for.

Well someone on FB posted the production model for the viper mk VII (in bare plastic). It looks great...and is estimated to release during the summer after the raptor/heavy raider wave which looks like spring time.

As far as the gameplay goes it's pretty simple except for the kinetic movement thing. Which is tricky to wrap your head around, i'd recommend playing without those rules first and slowly add whatever rules you want to use once you get the basics down. This isn't a competitive game so it's designed so there is optional rules and stuff you can choose to ignore.
