For Days of Future Past, there is an audio book available that fleshes the story out even more, especially Magneto and the deaths of the X-Men as they storm the facility. It’s better than the comic (in my opinion), and is possibly the strongest version of the story. I believe it’s made by “graphic audio”; give it a go ($13 for the digital copy, $20 for hard copy). I was a HUGE fan of it.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

My go-to for comics was always the classic X-Men run, up until New X-Men (Grant Morrison’s run). I’ve gone back and purchased everything in TPB form over the years. I sincerely dislike modern Marvel comics, because they miss the point of what made their heroes who they are. We now have kids running around as heroes because they think it’s cool. I think Cho Hulk is the biggest gripe I have; a kid cures Banner, becomes Hulk without any curse and it’s “totally awesome”. That pile of kaiju excrement, and various similar characters coming after for Iron Man, Ms Marvel, and stuff like that ruined the new age of Marvel for me. I’ll keep my old X-Men comics and love rereading them.

And the Walking Dead stuff is awesome fun too!!

Cho started off that way but it turns out he only had something that was helping him to surpress the monster. And the longer he was the hulk, the more often he was the hulk, and the more emotional he got the more the monster started coming out and the less capable he was of stopping it. Cho is/was? every bit cursed by the hulk that banner was.

Also, unlike DC who have to reboot every 2 years to keep the status quo, marvel movie their gak forward. In a world filled with heroes doing what hey have done, the next generation to get powers WOULD be excited to be heroes. Right up until they realize what that life costs them and they have to face threats like ultron.

Kamalha Kahn for example has all the doubt and worry you would expect from Peter Parker as a teenager trying to deal with the confusing changes happening to him while hide it from his family. Highly Recommend her book. The Runaways are having no fun at all. Cho was having a great time all the way up until he lost control and realized what kind of wide spread destruction would happen at his hands. eytc etc...

I’m another Earthlet hooked on 2000AD. It’s great, and not afraid to take some risks, thanks to its anthology nature.

Plus, it’s home to pretty much every British Comic Creator that’s made the big time. Gave them their first breaks, and few are above a return to their first gig now and again.

I also find it’s stories short on filler. When you’ve only got four episodes at maybe six pages each, your plotting tends to be quite dense

I'm still waiting for a "humble Bundle" 2000AD where I can get a significant chunk of their 2000+ backlog of comics for a price that is insanely good. I'm one of those that likes to read from start to finish and whilst I'm sure many of thire comics are stand alone, a good number (like the mighty Judge) have long back stories and history to them that I want to appreciate.

It's one big reason I avoid DC and Marvel, though with them there's also the rebooting issue which further complicates things and that fact that through TV series and films I already know the general story to many of their biggest names (heck spiderman had 3 origin films and you could even count the more recent one with Mr Stark as a 4th!)

After seeing the cursory background of Cho and Khan, I avoid everything they’re involved with like the plague. Both are as foul as Harry Potter to me. I like my Super Heroes tragic, not kids who are totally into it until they realize they’re in over their heads and are written as if by 7 year olds.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Well written as if by 7 yr olds is quite a bit ridiculous when you have read none of it and just admitted to barely giving it a glance at their backgrounds.

You might like your characters tragic, but there is room for more than 1 kind of character out there.

Honestly the way I see the continual re-imaginings that DC/Marvel go for tends to result in very polarized fanbases. You've got some that go with the flow through the ages; whilst others hop hero to hero. Others are stuck in a generation. For example to me the proper XMen is the original cartoon series (way back before the new wave cartoons after the live action movies).

So to me the liveaction movies and the newer cartoons are "wrong" as they are not the same story as before nor even the same characters.

MetaBarons Another Humanoids publication and this times its into the far future of sci-fi! The artwork here is really inspiring and stylish. A real treat for the eyes! Follow the history of the Metabarons - the most powerful warriors in the galaxy as they survive in a mad world of epic empires and plots. There's also a few other series connected to this that are well worth checking out including a new metabarons series.

I mean this one

Back when Rogue was a mighty warrior not an emo (seriously I still don't get why they did that to her and didn't just shift Jubilee into that role).

Comics are a medium that get a lot better once you get a little industry savvy with them. Letting go of connections to specific characters and instead following quality authors has always been the key to enjoying comics long term. They are a very experimental medium and generally speaking, things only stick when they're good. People get all wrapped up in stuff like Hydra Cap and what not, but anyone with any experience in comics at all that actually read that issue rather than the clickbait articles that spoiled it could have told you it wasn't intended to last.

I'm not really a fan of comics that have thousands of episodes through decades, I'm more oriented towards graphic novels.

Watchmen, The Crow, Sin City and V for Vendetta are my favorite ones.

About real comics I mostly read italian ones: Tex (I read every episodes since the beginning, mid 50s, to early 2010s and the majority of special issues), Nathan Never and Dylan Dog. I also love other italian comics that are more comedy oriented like Cocco Bill, Sturmtruppen and Cattivik.

I have a few marvel comics, classics from the most popular superheroes that were released with the newspaper but never liked them particularly. Only one X-Men story: Days of Future Past and I loved the movie as well.

Generally speaking the best way to enjoy comics with decades worth of content is to recognize that very few of them hand off author to author without becoming a completely different beast. Most celebrated runs don't last decades. They're often 2-5 years tops and collected across maybe 5-6 trade paperbacks. The big key to enjoying these characters is to realize that you don't really need to know or appreciate Grant Morrison's Batman to like the stuff written by Snyder or King. Each one is writing their own little Batman saga and if you like the work of one of those authors, you can pick up that arc and likely really enjoy that run.

As everything I'm reading is catching up on old stuff, I almost disqualify myself from this thread. Here goes, anyway...

Malibu's Ultraverse. I have reread ALL of it numerous times, and it never gets old. It refreshes my vitriol over Marvel's handling of Malibu, but it still is a great universe set up from the ground up as a creator friendly and reader accessible universe, and they nail it. Well, right until the moment Marvel z listers start showing up.

Omaha the Cat Dancer. Recently on a Transformers forum I frequent, Gold Digger was brought up because of some heavy handed TF references. I've detested Gold Digger for a long time, and referenced OTCD as doing everything GD tried and failed to do, but way better. I read through the series again because of this, and despite the obvious stigma attached to the book, it's solidly written.

Continuity Comics. This one is a work in progress. I'm currently halfheartedly accumulating the entire run so I can binge read it. I remember really liking Megalith and Armor.

Isnt malibu the one where every series had cross overs with all the other series with little boxes telling you to read such and such # whatever? But then when they were released there was all kinds of delays so some of those referenced issues were months away from publication or got cancled and never actually came out?

Yeah, everything tied to the Genesis crossover. The Ultraverse was pretty steady with its releases, and I don't remember them having that problem. Black September was their REAL problem.

Cozy cockpit of an Imperial Knight

Kicking this back to the top!

Recently I decided to order Maus, having read it numerous times in Dutch while at the library, but really wanting to own an English dead tree format version, as the translation tends to drop some things.
