Techpriestsupport wrote: This is a hard movie to recommended because it can be a hard movie to watch. Truman capote's "in cold blood".
It's based on a true story, the murder of a family in Kansas in 1959. It's a black and white movie and the medium serves it well. It's a harsh movie about harsh people in a harsh world.
It manages to portray the murderers as pathetic and in some ways pitiful, and still cold blooded murderers. They are not cardboard cutouts, they are human. Fully human.
Despite being made in 1967 this movie is very intense and hard to sit thru even today. You will feel things watching it. You may not be sure how to feel when the murderers are executed, but the point is you will feel something for them.
A great book and movie indeed! A classic in my book

Recently rediscovered Highlander II: The quickening.
There is no sugar coating it - its a terrible sequel to Highlander. However...!
My brother and I used to watch it alot often back in the day when we first set out in all things GW and we watched it while painting'n'gaming. Somehow, the two bird-men dudes, Virginia Madsen( Coooorrrr! ), Sean Connery, that guy from Scrubs and Amazing Grace made it extremely watchable. And Michael Ironside was evil Jim Carrey before Jim Carrey was Jim Carrey.
"Stay back!"
"I can help! Seriously, I want to check out of this production first!"
"No, Highlander, I must go first - in its in the script. I insist..."
"Will we see you again?"
"If the money talks then the BS sequel will walk! Who knows, Highlander, who knows!"
"Bastard...gets even better treatment than Spock!"

Got to say, not quite as I recalled. But still a fun film. And given the story claims all civilisation is derived from it, the costume department did well. You can see bits of Greek, Roman, Viking, Aztec. All sorts. Even a Pope like figure.

Willow is great fun (good to watch while painting). A favourite of mine is Clue, but I've always enjoyed quick-witted writing, very Neil Simon-esque writing. Tim Curry is...on fire in that movie.

Clue is one of those movies that gets better on the second viewing. Many of the people I've shown it to were so busy worrying about whodunnit that they missed most of the humor the first time around.
The Raid 1 - 2 (2011, 2014) - some of the best action films ever produced. I can't keep praising these movies for their directing and their style.
Arrival (2016) - Another great SCI-FI film that never gets talked about.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - one of the best sequels to a film, improved on the previous designs and story of the previous film.
Wild America - 1997 - A great family film about three brothers filming animals, in their search for a great bear cave. (Loosely based on a true story)
Gattaca - 1997 - A Film Noir movie about a character named Vincent living in the near future as geneticism has take over all facets of life, everyone in certain classes are designed to be perfect. One of the most interestings films out there.
Equilibrium - 2002 - A Dystopian future of 1984 except the main characters are kung fu gun slinger bishops.
Machinist - 2004 - Factory worker Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) suffers from insomnia so severe that his condition has taken its toll on his weight and his mental health. Fantastic film, has you guessing the whole way through, IS NOT for the faint of heart...
Galaxy Quest -1999 - Star Trek-like actors are mistaken for the real thing by actual aliens! Comedy, great cult classic.
Troll 2 - 1990 - Horrible Terrible horror film starring harry potter. Whats not to like?
From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.

Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971) Basically the same cast. Kind of a comedy version of Fistful of Dollars.
Any of the Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy (There are 6 of them, I think). Can't beat this set up: "Former detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora investigate a murder case, mostly for the fun of it." which defines most of them.
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

While we're on the subject of actually old films (read:....90's and prior I suppose). If you've a penchant for legal thrillers, Grisham novels, or films like A Few Good Men ---- you owe it to yourself to find a copy of Breaker Morant, a fantastic military/law-and-order film about British Officers in the Boer War.
In the same vein, perhaps, is Bopha - a film about a black South African police officer (Danny Glover) during the end of apartheid/etc. Pretty good film.
PS: Another film which is a classic, but maybe not for current young viewers in America, is Das Boot - "the" submarine film which has never been surpassed. Originally a six(?) hour miniseries on German television, later adapted to a 1.5+ hour long film, and then released as a 2.5+ hour director's cut (can you keep up!?) this Wolfgang Petersen film is based on a famous novel by a German journalist. It was filmed inside a prop-submarine and the actors never washed their clothes, or shaved, or were exposed to sunlight during the filming. It's gritty, dark, realistic, depressing, but beautifully filmed and stressful as all hell.
This is a well known movie amongst military kids and viewers, but anyone who's somehow missed it should track down the Director's Cut film (watching the full miniseries is a large ask for a lot of folks). Best viewed in German with English subtitles. It was one of Jurgen Prochnow's biggest roles.

iu second the vote for Quartermas and the Pit, heck any of the Quartermas films are good.
There is a film I saw once, but I cant remember the title. It is about a father who starts to see people out of the corner of his eye, then proceeds to discover a whole sub culture of people who have dropped out of the normal society, becoming invisable to the general populace. They enjoy the freedom of going anywhere, doing anything, and will kill to protect it. any ideas?

The man who would be king from 1975, with Sean Connery. link - historical adventure movie from when those were good. (Or I was younger!)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Another really obscure movie: Burn! from 1969. Historical fictional drama, with a really nice twist.
I stumbled across it on TV once, and ended up seeing it all, it just got better and better in the right way as I watched it, later forgot it, and spent years trying to remember enough of it to search it up. And bought it on Dvd while that was still a thing, just in time.

"Zone troopers". Ths ius a loginglky made tribute to the golkden age of SF, the gernsback era. Back where aliens traveled in bell nozzeled, rake finned rockets instead of flying saucers and had big bug eyes.Back in the 30's thru the 40's.
The fact it is a tribute might confuse some people today, as parody has become so prevalent that many people can't recognize tribute anymore. People don't make tribute movies now, they just make endless parodies.
Zone troopers is a pure 40's sf movie, with an alien rocketship shot down by the luftwaffe in fascist italy and a band of Americans cut off behind enemy lines determined not to let the alien tech fall into natzee hands. This involves rescuing a bug eyed alien who can't speak English, lots of weird alien gizmos, hitler getting punched in the mouth and dead nazis everywhere.
A fun movie made with love and respect for a long gone era that still inspired a lot of modern sf, like star wars, and with that kind of innocence old sf had in the days of bug eyed monsters. If you've had enough dark future, angsty, hopeless, overblown special effects and F bomb laden movies you want for a while, try this.

Fun movie but it should have been retitled "Gino" as he gives Mr Darcy a run for his money. Apart from Klenholz, I honestly cannot name another character in the movie because thats how often they say his name.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The moment I had laid eyes on Julia Adams in her swimsuit I knew the creature had the right idea! Looks great in 3D...
Saturn 3
Love this movie! The stomping up and down the corridors scared me as a kid. Hector is pretty good and plays villian and victim at the same time...in a chibi-manga style, I wish he had ran off with Alex.

Yeah, like, wow! I realize she looked like that well before my parents were even born, but she was absolutely fabulous at the time! Fun fact: her legs were actually insured for like $120,000 or something. And that's in the 1950s.

BR49 is not at all old. GQuest, and the Raid are not forgotten; of the two, GQuest is significantly overrated.
Never watched Firefly( which is poor really as we have a copy in the house ), but I did watch Serenity at the pictures. Was expecting a mono-Wachoski movie(from the first few minutes) but instead was pleasantly surprised with a fun space western.
Equilibrium...hired it out back in the day and just couldn't get past the first 20 minutes as it seemed more Matrix BS. That said, some regard it highly...

I'd put Equilibrium with films like The One, Pitch Black, Underworld and Time Cop, smaller sci fi movies with some big names hamming it up having fun in a genre action movie with few pretensions. If you're onboard, the films are fun. They aren't great cinema and they aren't for everyone, but they have earned a place on many a geek's shelf.
Equilibrium was in the editing phase when the Matrix was released, so it was unfortunately branded as an imitation, rather than as a victim of coincidence.
I quite liked it, although it isn't without its faults and inconsistencies.
I'll have to give Equilibrium a second viewing. I didn't see it all the way through, to be fair.
OMG, nearly forgot - The Never Ending Story. The first film is an 80s classic and Wolfgang Peterson pulls of a decent family film, which can still be quite dark. The wolf, Gmork, and Noah Hathaway as Atrayu are definitely the highlights.

Equilibrium makes no sense tho. The gunfights are almost always against guys who stand there to be shot. The drug angle is ok, but undercut by the propaganda speeches. It's just very badly written, when it could have been a parable about lifelong Ritalin and Big Pharma
