Cool little bots. Maharg is right, water can be enough in a lot of situations. A wet pallette can help keep the paint flowing, too. For really thinning the paint you will probably want a medium of some kind, either the water/Future mix or a clear acrylic medium so the color does not get too washed out.

As mentioned, you can get a nice smooth finish on Tau without any special mediums. Just look at my Tau painting log, all painted with just paint and water.

I've taken another look at your tau Captain Brown. Great, neat stuff. Classic T'au are always and eye pleaser.

I've finished painting the rest of the gun drones. I've also painted up a flamethrower team for my bolt action germans. fun little break from the tau stuff. I'm quite happy with how the flames on little Hans turned out.

Two updates in one weekend eh?

Got some work done on a piranha, body is almost finished. Just some details and it's on to the crew. Still need to work on thinning. Bought some vallejo mat medium so hope that helps.

Wow, quite the collection of interesting projects going on here. I like the Tau colors of gold, white and teal. I haven't seen that scheme before.

I was thinking the Tau needed some adversaries so I converted these three testers for Imperial Guard. The parts used were Victrix, Perry and Games Workshop Admech. Still some work to do. Fill some gaps, add some equipment… But at least I'm glad I got to sit down and fiddle around a bit.

Not really sure where I want to go with them. I was thinking some local House on a recently colonized world large and wealthy enough to fund a small army and rise up against the new Tau rule. Based off of Praetorians, pith helmets will fit this theme I believe. No bases yet, I need to dig up some first.







Yet another project to distract myself with, hurrah.

Hey guys, I managed to squeeze in a little hobby time.

I'm finished with the piranha, I'm glad to say. Tried my hand at some battle-damage as well, as one of the drones antenna broke off. Nothing much as I didn't want it over the top. I wanted to go for a burnt out look and I think I've managed that. Also went for some very minor chipping on the side just to practice. I'm happy with the result, although I see a lot of room for improvement. If anyone has any ideas or tips, they're more than welcome.

Apart from that, there's three more Imperial soldiers built. This force will most likely never reach a legal or playable list. The main goal here is just to have some fun converting stuff. There's a couple of ideas running around my head as to how to paint them, but more on that later.

Looking at the pictures of the piranha, I've noticed the hull looks very grainy still. Still figuring out if I like it or not. (Thinning, will I ever learn?)

I'm testing a colour scheme on the imperial soldiers now, and I could use some help. Just the tunics so far.

This is what I have so far, and I'm not really happy so far.



To give you guys an idea I'll share what I'm using for inspiration.



I'm basically asking how I can improve on this, because I'm not too happy with it. I think I went a little too light with this. I used game color turquoise and Vallejo green blue. I was thinking of starting a little darker and then working up with the aforementioned colors. I'm aiming for a muted, worn off blue rather than too light or too dark. At first I wanted to go with yellow and red but decided against it, to add variation.

I agree that your current color is too saturated when compared with your reference pics. You should probably start darker and mix lighter greys in for highlights, rather than another brighter blue. There is also a chance you may want a wash to muddy things up. I like the bits of weathering on the Piranha.

That's a nice distinct looking guard regiment you're building there, look forward to seeing it painted up. Agree with youwashock on adding some greys to the mix to get closer to the pictures.
Tau continue to look good too.

Here he is again, getting messy. Started with dark reaper, then thunderhawk blue and highlighted with vallejo field blue. Looking better already I think. From this point on I have a better idea on how to continue.

That definitely looks closer to your source material.
I had some spare time last night and tried a couple of things for this, though it seems i wasn't as quick as you - turns out I had a similar idea and tried out a scheme using Thunderhawk blue (THblue, drakenhof nightshade wash, reapply THblue, couple of highlights adding Fenrisian grey to th TH blue) which cam out like this. The other one used Alaitoc blue instead of thunderhawk blue, same wash and again mixed with FG for highlights. Gave something in between the TH blue and your initial attempt

I did my Tau with just regular GW paints just mixed in some water to thin the paint a little. One extra coat of watered down paint made a really smooth surface. Examples in my Tau log show that it was not as hard as I thought, even when repainting striped models.

I went along with the first method you described Maharg. I did change fenrisian grey with russ grey though. That's the first of the bunch finished and I'm finally pleased with it.





First time I painted the full face as well. Eyes, lips and eyebrows. Hope you can notice on these pictures.

The plastic mountain stirs from slumber

Hello guys, I'm back from from a short break. The Tau have been boxed untill further notice. I've picked up the AWI project again and also planning a D&D campaign. Hobbywise, that means working on some spooky bad boys for now.



So far i have this guy finished. I'm pleased with how the cloak turned out. Those colors will be used to tie the skeletons in too.





Moving on to the AWI project, the officer and sergeant are done, besides basing. The line itself are still WIP.

The british are coming, although at a turtle's pace. I did get some serious work done on the skeletons. Painting is done, just the bases to finish. I will be adding a wash over it and then applying some mossy folliage.

Micro update time.

I got a bit sidetracked by Apex Legends, that stuff can become quite addictive. Added some meagre folliage on the skeleton bases and cobled together a quick random adventurer from empire handgunner, swordman and leftover skeleton bits. Nothing much really, just felt like sharing the tiny progress I made.







Painting these bone boys was enjoyable but I'll be glad to move them off the workbench. Also, by looking at these pictures I realized I forgot to add a wash over the gravel. D'ohh.



Simple eh? Well, here's hoping to get more stuff done by the end of
the week.

The mini skeleton horde looks quite cool. Marvelously rusty. Rando the Adventurer looks good, too. Nothing like sitting down with the bitzbox and seeing what shakes out.

So Rando the adventurer... I'm sticking to that. Speaking of which, here he is. Only basing left to do




I also painted a civilian for the AWI project. Might be a priest, who knows. If so he's going to need a church. And the redcoats continue to advance at a turtle's pace. Slow and steady wins the race they say.




I'm starting to dislike batch painting, working on rank and file for historicals can quickly take the wind out of my sails. Moving on! Small scatter terrain that came from a LOTR set i've had for ages.



Last but not least is a cabalite for the Corvus Cabal. Warcry has really grabbed my attention lately and have decided to have a stab at it. The Crow Boys are easily my favorite of the warbands.




I still have to paint as what appears to be a slashed throat on this guy (I know nothing about warcry fluff wise), but I yet have to figure out how to do it convincingly. The feather cape looks like it could use a few touches of white for variation, but I'll get there.

Rando turned out swell. Loving the little bits of rust on the armor. The crow is super cool. Only my own teetering tower of unpainted shame keeps me from considering a band or two.

Still undecided for the bases. I got the technical paint down so there's some nice cracking going down. Considering some wash, minor tufts, some rocks and skulls here and there...

I agree that they sort of ask for sparse basing. Something bleak, arid even. Love the way you are doing their masks.

In reality the masks are highlighted and such, my crappy photography skills don't really show that. Worked a bit more on the corvus, finishing another cabalite and adding tufts. I hope this feels arid enough.



My warcry starter set also came through, yay! I've assembled both warbands so far. Just the beasts and terrain to do now. Opening that big box was a bit overwhelming, loads of sprues and other goodies. I had to dig through to get the rulebook out and gave it a quick read. Looks exciting!

Impressive variety of projects going here. I really like the bearded force commander. He reminds me of a very Ahab sort of character. The Corvus Warcry models are looking very nice, too. The models are dynamic and your high-contrast, limited-palette paint scheme really helps the eye see the dynamic movement of the models. Keep 'em coming.

I see the big crow in the back there. Look forward to seeing him in the murder. I think the bases work well.

I'm trying to finish the grunts first before starting papa crow though.

I started on the first iron golem as well. Wanted to ditch color and go with bare rusted metal. Looking at the result, this isn't really what I imagined. Skin feels off too. I might add some color to the armor, maybe green as I'm not a big fan of the original red.



Any sugestions?

The rust is so good. I think it would work with some green bits, though. Just to break it up a little. A bluish green, to play off the reddish orange of the rust.
