Never stated they were a sign of quality: Still Sindri is one of the most comical moments in RTS history.

Here's a entertaining video about all the PC games set in 40k up until March 2014. It's made by the now diseased (RIP) Totalbiscuit, a games critic and 40k enthusiast. Half the video is the list and the other half is a review. I can recommend starting from 1:15 and ending at 7:30 to get a glimpse of the complete 40k games library up until that point. Will probably help OP find what he's looking for. Most games can be found cheaply on GOG. Some are on steam.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I agree that the Campaings of Retribution where very much inferior.

But that game also gave us this so I can't really be mad:

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I exaggerated my dislike of marines just as much as I exaggerate my dislike of starcraft (and in fact they're born from the same source; hating the fandom far more than the actual content). Still, you are correct. DoW2 kept space marines as inhuman living weapons while still giving htem personality beyond "KILL THE ENEMY FOR DA EMPRAH!". It was a difficult balance, but they pulled it off. And they did so far better than any of GW's books had done up to that point-- many of them tried to overhumanize Marines and it just didn't work for me.

This is exactly why I will always go to the mat for Space Marine. As a shooter it's mediocre, but its capacity to make marines, and even Ultrasmurfs, likeable and human (ironically by using a stereotypical RAWR marine with a pole up his ass the size of a battle barge) was exquisitely compelling. I still hold out hope that one day the IP will be excavated from the corpse of THQ and the planned second and third games become a reality.

DoW1 for the mods, DoW2 and Chaos Rising for the story, and Retribution for the gameplay.

DoW1's gameplay leaves much to be desired, it is ancient and even with mods is not as good as modern RTS games.

But modern RTS games are... kinda rare and usually bad.

The further they get from Dune, the worse they become.

Maybe you're not looking in the right place?

Ashes of the Singularity, Grey Goo, DoW2, Planetary Annihilation, the Wargame series and Steel Division, BFG 2... I mean I could go on, but like they're not that rare.

Meh. <dismissive handwave>

Though I'd slot BFG in a completely different genre. Its real time, but the sole focus of the combat is a small number of ships in space battles and you don't have to juggle everything else simultaneously (and it's the only thing that's real time). That's a pretty different from an RTS.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

The fate of the C&C franchise was absolutely criminal.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

I would say I liked Dawn of War 1 the best - specifically, Dark Crusade. That was the game that got me into actual 40K. The graphics have not aged well, but I played it not that long ago and it still holds up as really fun game. I love the Risk-style map control element, I like the customization, and so on. Every faction having a unique campaign meant you had tons of replayability.

Dawn of War 2 I didn't like quite as much. Graphically, it was better, but I like RTS games a lot better than RTTs so ultimately I'm never going to love it as well. It did have a great story, and Chaos Rising was fun. I thought Retribution was pretty trash though - it felt quite lazy with so much copy-pasting across the "multiple" campaigns. It had very little replay for me because of that - IIRC I beat the game with Orks, and then started Guard only to realize it was almost identical, and quit after a few missions.

I spent a lot of time playing The Last Stand. For such a limited minigame it was great fun.

I bought Dawn of War 3 and I don't think I was able to get more than an hour or two into it. It didn't feel at all like a DOW game.

I cannot afford to buy into 40k. I got to demo it once at my local store, but then I realized how big of a hobby it is.

So my question...
Is there a PC that plays like the tabletop version AND that would let me play as Ork, Tau, Necron, and Tyranids?
Thanks in advance.

If money is an issue, and you really want to get into the table top hobby, I'd suggest KillTeam.

If you play Marines, you can do the whole investment for under 150$, maybe less if you cop the books in PDF online for it.

As for PC, Soulstorm is the final DLC for DoW 1 and it's still the best and closest to the table top in my opinion. You can get the steam bundle for pretty cheap during any steam sale.
