I've had a dearth of game recently, but I finally got chance to play Warlords of Erehwon as a scenario test for the upcoming SJGA meeting. I can't attend, unfortunately, but I did enjoy the game!

Here's a blast from the past that's gotten some attention recently - Battletech!

Gary, Chris and Russ are all old hands when it comes to piloting mechs, and I've had some on-again, off-again interest in the games. The new models and Clan Invasion kickstarter has brought the game into the rotation again.

So we each took a couple light mechs, blew the dust off our neurohelmets, and took to the field of battle!

In my previous game of Battletech, we used light mechs in the Succession Wars era.

In this game? Heavy and assault mechs in the Jihad era!

These two games couldn't have been more different, but they were still tons of fun.

Hmmmm, I prefer 3d terrain myself.

When you put together your beginning of the year goals, did you expect Battletech to be on your "to do" list?

I most certainly did not! And I especially didn't expect to find not one but two active Battletech groups in the local area.

I also enjoy 3d terrain, and another group I play with is currently playing Alpha Strike, which are the "fast-play" Battletech rules that's played on a 6x4 table with regular terrain. I've seen some great looking tables using 6mm buildings.

This week's post covers the main event at this month's SJGA meeting - a game of Contemptible Little Armies with some early WW1 action.

Good bat rep. Is movement randomized in Contemptible Little Armies?

Thanks for reading!

Movement is randomized in general. Infantry moving in close order moves 3d6, while infantry moving in open order move 2d6. You subtract 1d6 for moving through cover (woods, ruins), and being in close order gives a bonus for anyone shooting at the infantry.

After waaaaay too much painting and not enough playing, I got a chance to head down to Barrage 2019 for some games!

The first was a Napoleonic version of the WWII skirmish game, Combat Patrol.

Another Barrage post!

This time I was taking part in a large multiplayer battle using 40mm flats in a game that was reminiscent of H.G. Wells' Little Wars.

Not just flats, but hand casted and mostly painted by the game's GM!

And we've reached the end of the Barrage reports!

This final game was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but it was another For King and Parliament ECW battle run by club member Ted.

The scenario is actually one published by BigRedBat, the guy/shop behind To the Strongest! (the ancients/medieval ruleset that FK&P! is based on). It's got a fun combination of untested troops, different cavalry types, and even some artillery!

I finally got to sit down for a game this past weekend!

Sam and I brought out Red Book of the Elf King, with Meksant Farseer defending his encampment against Lowic Angersand.

This past weekend I went to HMGS East's Fall In!, and spent both days playing in tournaments. On the first day, I took part in a Warmaster: Revolution tournament with my Dogs of War army.

This week's post is about my first MESBG tournament experience, and what it's like to be clubbed repeatedly about the head with various blunt objects.

I had heard good things about the new ME SBG game as a ruleset, but have never looked into it.

Maelstrom of Battle seems great for a funsy, one-off game but not so great for a Tournament battle.

I think the combat is a little shallow, since it's mostly "If I have a higher Fight value, fish for 6s. If not, hope your opponent rolls low." But it's got a very tactical movement phase, and I like the integrated turns.

Maelstrom seems to favor either armies that have very self-reliant warbands, fast armies, or lucky rolls.

And now this week's post! I've been playing some more Warlords of Erehwon recently with my Orcs & Goblins. How do they stack up against a bunch of Dwarfs in a punch up? Turns out, not very well!

While I was back home for Thanksgiving, I met up with my old gaming group. Carl and I decided to play Muskets & Tomahawks, with my British against his Native Americans.

What started as a uphill fight for the Rangers and their Indians allies ended in a complete rout!

Very much so! I did place the buildings a little too close together, however, which made it easier for the Natives to quickly reach them. And if I ever get this scenario again with the same force composition, the Regulars are starting on the table.

After a very long absence, I put some 15mm WWII down on the table!

I demoed a game of FiveCore Company Command at the SJGA's monthly meeting, both as an excuse to use my old Flames of War miniatures, and to familiarize myself further with a pretty nifty set of rules.

Unfortunately that was one of the games I decided to move on from. I kick myself from time to time, because I had two fully painted armies to play with. Dunno what I was thinking!

So it's been a little while since I've last updated here, but my blog has been busy!

First, I had my yearly review for 2019, where I look back at all the games I played, what I painted, and what I posted on the blog.

Second, I've played games! Three, to be exact, have been posted on the blog.

Right before the end of the year, I was able to get Saga out on the table, with my Normans fighting against a horde of northmen.

A Yuletide Clash - SAGA AAR

I also got a chance to play a game of Rebels & Patriots, which I'm working on a project for in 15mm. This was a 28mm battle set during the French & Indian War.

A Stroll Through the Woods - Rebels & Patriots AAR

And finally, January's SJGA meeting featured a game of General d'Armee, with a refight of the action at Gilly.

Wow, it's been a while since I've updated this, huh?

My last post was pre-Covid. What innocent times.

Well, here's the last game I've played this year (and it may also be the last game of the year!

Warlords of Erehwon continues to make the table, and this was a relatively large fight between the forces of Good and Evil.

Skirmish in the Sylvan Forest - Warlords of Erehwon AAR

There was even some discussion of using John's and my Greenskins as the invading force in a campaign.

Erehwon's goal of being a fairly generic system has led to Barbarians, Olympians (not-greeks), Knights, and Romans as available forces. At some point they might have to rename it "Warlords of Erehwemos"!

Hooray for Erewhon! I'm starting to amass models for Warlords of Erehwon, and see it being played brings a smile to my face. I have to ask though, where did that mammoth model come from? I've been looking in different places for mammoth options for Barbarian force.
