Cinemas I'm split on.

For something like MCU, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings (and similar scale), it genuinely does add to the experience. The playback tech is better than I have at home, and doesn't require a significant investment from me.

Other stuff? I can take it or leave it, and await home release. Like Aquaman. Did I enjoy it? Let's just say that'll learn me for shopping when three sheets to the wind!

The key thing for me is that not everyone does feel it adds to the experience, but only people who like it get a choice in the matter. The last time I had a superior experience watching a film in a cinema compared to at home was when they ran the Star Wars special editions to get folk hyped up for the new prequel trilogy, and that's only because the alternative in those days was VHS on a tiny CRT screen often many many months or even years after the cinema release. The balance tipped for me about twenty years ago when DVDs and 30+ inch tellies became mainstream.

These days? It's gak either way - if I don't go to the cinema, stuff will get spoiled unless I'm willing to live in a cave cut off from society for 3-6 months, if I do go then some combination of other people, garbage projection, ludicrous expense, and just the sheer fact that I feel forced into it all serve to sour the experience of watching the film.

If going to the cinema really does "add to the experience" that much for some folk, then they shouldn't have an issue travelling two towns over and paying 3-4 times the price for a ticket(based on the dire predictions of industry wonks every time someone suggests removing their artificial exclusivity). Let it be an actual choice, and if that means the end of giant cinema chains oh well too bad so sad.

Bitter, moi?

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

But video games these days aren't what they were 10 or even 5 years ago.

The $60 game is often a shell of a game, with so much stuff cut for "gold" or "delux" editions, with increasingly high-priced "season passes". Games are far more expensive than they were years ago.

They also cost far more to produce. Forget the technology behind the games that needs to be licensed or developed in house, the size of the development teams and the sheer man hours behind any given game has sky rocketed for most titles.

The small studio 15-20 dollar games tend to be the best bang for your buck and for theirs.

Your AAA big titles just cost too much for them to not look for alternative methods for bringing in some extra dollars past point of sale.

I agree. At this point while the base price is $60, the expectation is no longer that you get a complete game and it's pretty much just a bootstrapper for "live services".

I only go to the cinema to be sociable - so rarely. even then i have to put up with idiots talking or unable to close their fething mouths when eating / ruslting bags - seriously - kill them all.

I am tone deaf and also can;t tell the difference between HD and non HD so much of the cinema "experience" is lost on me.

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/05/01/hulu-marvel-announce-live-action-ghost-rider-helstrom-series-gabriel-luna-returning/

What was once Netflix now appears to be all things Hulu, with Marvel and the streaming service (both coincidentally controlled by Disney and an integral part of the company’s entire Disney+ streaming service rollout) announcing that the Marvel Universe would be expanding to include two new live-action series set in the world of the Spirits of Vengeance: Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom – both set to premiere in 2020.

Executive produced by series showrunner Ingrid Escajeda, Paul Zbyszewski, and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, the antihero Ghost Rider (also known as Robbie Reyes) is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.
Variety is reporting that Gabriel Luna is returning to the character he played in the ABC-Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – but sources stress that “this will be a completely new iteration of the character in no way connected to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline.”

Executive produced by series showrunner Paul Zbyszewski and Loeb, Marvel’s Helstrom centers on Daimon and Ana Helstrom: the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity – each with their attitude and skills.

While no specific information has been announced or confirmed, both series are expected to occupy a “shared universe” set-up, similar to how the characters existed in the comics. Another possibility to consider is if either – or both – series would crossover with Runaways.

Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios serve as co-prodcuers, with the series joining the upcoming third season of Marvel’s Runaways and recently announced adult animated series Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Marvel’s Howard The Duck, which will all lead into special event Marvel’s The Offenders.

I think what made it acceptable was that he was an actual Ghost Rider. In the comics he kind of isn't. I would really prefer we see Danny Ketch. When people think Ghost Rider they know the name Johnny Blaze but the look and powers they think of are Danny's.

Seems Marvel Television still has a few things they control.

Shame Jeph Loeb won't ever get to connect his shows to the MCU.

Im fine with it. If you count Marvel TV in terms of hours of content more than 50% of it is kind of trash and doesn't fit in with the rest of it.

The MCU works because it's one big cohesive story being told over so many entries. You need someone coordinating that to keep it cohesive and good or gak runs off the rails real fast like the comics often do.

Marvel tv is what happens when the other guy doesn't want to play a part of the bigger picture and instead just wants to do his own thing.

Inhumans is full on embarrassingly bad. Most of shield is also. Peggy Carter was good. Netflix was mostly good (defenders was not. the big secret plot being dragon bones was dumb as feth). Cloak and Dagger and runaways is forgettable. I didn't stick with it long enough. Did they ever actually run away?

Ugh.

Or the world literally flooded with inhumans. Because Marvel TV were so pissy about fox that in their short sightedness decided to jump the gun and turn the inhumans into the MCU version of mutants. Which then creates the situation where no matter what the Avengers are up to you have to ask why nobody in any crowd of civilians has any powers on any level? Shield publicly exists with a "Inhuman" director who has super strength. Where the hell was he during civil war? Talbot became Gravitron and tore through NYC. Where was Spiderman? Daredevil? Ironfist? Jessica Jones? Punisher? Ironman? Warmachine? Vision?

Yeah, Atleast with some of the MCU Netflix you can rationalize why no ones showing up, these are mostly personal stories with very little stakes.
But yeah, Shield kinda Jumped the Shark.

As I heard it the movie guys wouldn’t keep the Shield guys in the loop for what was happening and what was planned so they just had to write their own stuff and react after the fact.

Also, the Darkhold and Ghost Rider showed up and neither Dr. Strange nor Wong decided to even check in?

Loki was on Earth for 5 minutes before he got slingringed into a perpetual falling dimension.

But the Darkhold... the book of Dormamu is running rampant in LA and none of the wizards give a gak? Ghost Rider shows up killing people and hes not on Strange list of people to keep an eye out for?

Well thats true, but it's also true that the actors were equally kept in the dark. Marvel as kept the spoilers and leaks to a minimum because sometimes the actors were not even given the script except in a windowless room on the day of shooting that scene where they were not allowed to bring their phones or any cameras.

Fake scripts were apparently common so if anything leaked they were fake leaks.

Try to widen the circle of the people in the know to a team of writers, actors, and studio execs at ABC and everything would go to hell.

Disney + streaming seems like the right move. Release more chapters in the universe that don't compromise the universe. Not a series that has to hit a certain number of episodes at a certain time slot each week. Just the correct number of hours to tell the story and then move on to another story. If we want to go back to that character later then do it when it would be appropriate.

Not to nitpick, but Graviton tore though Chicago I believe, which is also where that giant alien ship crash landed.

I know people who were dead certain that those events were going to get mentioned in Infinity War/Endgame. Amazing...

Hmmm..

Suddenly worried for Walking Dead.

The show definitely improved last season, and has been renewed for another. But the ball is now in Disney's court.

Previously it survived slipping ratings, because they were still good for it's airing channel. Now? Who knows. When they're pumping cashmonies into new properties to get a whole streaming channel off the ground, is a long-in-the-tooth ratings has been an albatross, or a welcome temptation for new subscribers?

The movies are really no better. Why doesn’t anyone else show up to help when the president of the United States is kidnapped in iron man 3? Other characters not showing up to help is a thing you just need to accept at face value when it’s not an explicit crossover.

Agents of SHIELD is an oddity.

We were promised 'it's all connected'. And it was. For a season or two. Then nowt. Ditto the Netflix shows.

Not an oddity, just the bitter reality of productions, egos and people wanting to be in charge.

There was a time when the MCU was under the same banner as Marvel Television, that being Marvel proper, and therefore Ike "World's Greatest Tightass" Perlmutter. It took the top two guys at Disney stepping in to rip Marvel Studios out of Marvel proper for Feige to really get to work with the MCU. The problem is they left behind a television studio that was only connected as long as no one looked too hard, meaning tons of shows that reference the movies and movies that never took a second glance at the shows (with only one very recent exception).

They didn;t even had many references to Stark tech or similar, or people in the news - there were plenty of opportunities to name drop without showing expesive cast but it almost never happened.

The Netflix shows dont do anything bad enough or forgetful enough to not be connected.
They are all such personal stories and small conflicts that they dont fall into the trap of "Why isnt Blank Here"
I mean, the most recent, Punisher, they are such small conflicts that calling a hero would be stupid.
Why would they call Iron Man or Thor for bank robbers?

It’s never really been that connected. That’s been a big part of its success. Even the movies mostly stand on their own and mostly only connect via Easter eggs and post credit scenes. Endgame is probably the first time a film has somewhat completely relied on what came before to work honestly.

Except the sokovia acords would mean luke cage and jessica jones would get approached by the government and forced to sign or get put in the raft. Dannys enemies could just report him to the government. Its not like hes been quiet about his powers. Kingpin could just have anyone send a tip to the gov about matt murdock and it would wreck him.

Then they knocked down that building with dragon bones under it and lots of earth quakes. Ninjas attacking hospitals and covering roof tops.

Its not all small scale and lacking interference.
